Nagrik is a 2015 Indian Marathi language mystery political film, directed by Jaypraad Desai and produced by Arti Sachin Chavan and co-produced by Dr.Sunil Chavan presented by Sachhi Entertainment and Ronak Bandelkar. The film is released on 12 June 2015. [1] [2]

Plot

Nagrik is set against the political backdrop of Maharashtra. [3] Shyam Jagdale, the chief political correspondent of a leading Marathi daily called 'Aaj Mumbai' does an important exposé in his political column 'Nagrik'. This triggers off a series of events that uncovers the unholy nexus between politics, business and the media. Plans of Vikas Patil, the new rising star on the political horizon, are thwarted. Shyam becomes suspicious at the turn of events and smells a bigger conspiracy. But treading the path of truth has never been easy or forgiving.

Critical response

Ganesh Matkari of Pune Mirror wrote "Success, I believe, is not all that matters, sometimes it is enough to see that you have given it all you’ve got". [4] Mihir Bhanage of The Times of India gave the film 3.5 stars out of 5 and wrote "We rarely see a film that has a strong balance of good content and technical acumen. Nagrik is one of those rare one. Do give it a watch". [5]

Awards

Nagrik won five awards at the 52nd Maharashtra State Awards including Best Social Film, Director, Dialogue, Lyrics and Cinematography. It also won the award for the Best Actor in a Negative Role for Milind Soman and Special Jury award for director Jaypraad Desai at MICTA 2016, Sydney. Other awards include Prabhat Puraskar, Sahyadri awards and others.

Shwas is a Marathi film, released in 2004. It was India's official entry to the 2004 Oscars and was ranked 6th in the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film category. Its storyline is based on a real-life incident in Pune. A low-budget of Indian rupee 65 lakhs (6 million), Shwaas won the National Award for best film in 2004, nearly 50 years since a Marathi film last earned this title. Directed by debutant Sandeep Sawant, it was shot in 33 days at Sindhudurg, Konkan, Pune and at KEM Hospital in Pune. Shwaas was acknowledged as a "significant turn for Marathi cinema" which had been going through a low patch. After its success, it was released in Hindi, Bengali and Tamil languages.

Kaksparsh is a 2012 Indian Marathi period drama film directed by Mahesh Manjrekar and produced by Aniruddha Deshpande and Medha Manjrekar. The film stars Sachin Khedekar, Priya Bapat, Medha Manjrekar, Savita Malpekar and Ketaki Mategaonkar. Based on a short story by Usha Datar by the same name, the film depicts the tumultuous events in a Chitpavan Brahmin family, set around 1930–1950 in Konkan.
