Nana Aba Appiah Amfo (born 30 September 1971) is a Ghanaian linguist, university administrator and the current Vice-chancellor at the University of Ghana. [1] [2] [3] Until her appointment, she was the Pro Vice-Chancellor for Academics and Students Affairs at the University of Ghana in West Africa. [4] [5]

Early life and education

Nana Aba Appiah Amfo was born in Kumasi on September 30, 1971. She had her early education at then University Primary School (now KNUST Basic School), She continued her basic education at Services Primary School at Takoradi and Goldfields School Complex in Tarkwa. [6] Amfo attended Holy Child School for her 'O'Level education and later attended Archbishop Porter Girls’ Secondary School for her A’ Level. She proceeded to the University of Ghana, from 1991 to 1996, for a Bachelor's degree in French and Linguistics. She completed the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Trondheim, Norway in 2001 with an MPhil degree in Linguistics and acquired a PhD degree in 2007 from the same university in Linguistics. [7]

Career

Amfo began her career as a lecturer at the Department of Linguistics at the University of Ghana in 2001. After leaving to pursue further studies in Norway, she returned to Ghana and continued lecturing at the University of Ghana. She was promoted to the rank of Senior Lecturer in 2007, the same year she obtained her PhD. She became an associate professor in 2011, and Professor in 2017. [8] She was elected an executive committee member of Fédération Internationale des Langues et Littératures Modernes. [9] [10] Nana Aba Amfo served as the Pro Vice-Chancellor for Academic and Student Affairs at the University of Ghana from November 2019 to July 2021. [11] In July 2021, she was appointed as the Acting Vice Chancellor. [12] She received professional management training from the University of Applied Sciences, Germany, INSEAD and Harvard Business School. [13] She has served as the Chairperson of the Department of Linguistics (2013–14) and the Dean of the School of Languages. [13] Amfo serves on the advisory board of Coalition of People Against Sexual and Gender-Based Violence and Harmful Practices (CoPASH) under the auspices of the UNFPA. [8]

Research

Amfo's research interests has been mainly about  linguistic sub-discipline of Pragmatics, which allows her to explore the role that context plays in our conversational interactions and how that influences communication in different domains. [14]

Her research resulting in several publications in nationally and internationally reputable journals such as Acta Linguistica Hafnensia, Current Issues in Language Planning, Discourse and Society, Ghana Journal of Linguistics, Journal of Pragmatics, Journal of West African Languages, Legon Journal of the Humanities, Lingua, Linguistics, Nordic Journal of African Studies, Nordic Journal of Linguistics, Pragmatics, and Studies in African Linguistics, have covered the role of function words in communication, information structure, grammaticalization, language use in specific domains such as health, gendered contexts, politics, religion, and migratory contexts. [14]

Her (edited) books and book chapters have been published by Ayebia Clarke Publishing Company, John Benjamins Publishing Company, Novus Press, Routledge (Taylor & Francis Group), and SubSaharan Publishers.

Her recently (2018) co-authored textbook on Therapeutic Communication Competencies for Nurses and Midwives, commissioned by the Nursing and Midwifery Council, is published by DigiBooks. [14]

Personal life

She is married to Frank Amfo and the couple have three children. [6]

The University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) a public university located at Ho in the Volta Region of Ghana. UHAS is one of the youngest public universities in Ghana. Its operation started in September 2012, when the first batch of 154 students were admitted.

Florence Abena Dolphyne is a Ghanaian linguist and academic. She was the first female professor and first female pro-vice chancellor of the University of Ghana.

Professor Domwini Dabire Kuupole is a former Vice Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast (UCC). He was the former Pro-Vice Chancellor of the university, before his induction into office as the ninth Vice-Chancellor (VC) of the university.

She is a member of the New Patriotic Party of Ghana.

George Kwabena Effah Benneh was a Ghanaian geographer, academic and university administrator who served as the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Legon from 1992 to 1996. He was a professor and later an emeritus professor of Geography and Resource Development at the same university. Benneh was Minister of Lands, Natural Resources, Fuel and Power from 1979 to May 1981 and Minister of Finance from May 1981 to December 1981 under Hilla Limann during the Third Republic. Before this, Benneh has served as Commissioner for Lands, Natural Resources, Fuel and Power under the SMC II and AFRC regimes.

Most governments decided to temporarily close educational institutions in an attempt to reduce the spread of COVID-19. As of 12 January 2021, approximately 825 million learners are affected due to school closures in response to the pandemic. According to UNICEF monitoring, 23 countries are implementing nationwide closures and 40 are implementing local closures, impacting about 47 percent of the world's student population. 112 countries' schools are open.

The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) called on its members to engage in an indefinite strike on January 10, 2022. The UTAG stated that this action is due to "worsening conditions of service" without sufficient response from the employer.

Mahfouz A. Adedimeji is a Nigerian professor of Pragmatics and Applied Linguistics. He is the pioneer Vice Chancellor of Ahman Pategi University, Patigi in Nigeria, a Fulbright scholar, former Director of the Centre for Peace and Strategic Studies of the University of Ilorin, an ex-member of the Governing Council of the International Peace Research Association and a cultural ambassador to the US under the Institute of International Education (IIE), New York.
