Akkineni Nageswara Rao, widely known as ANR, was an Indian film actor and producer, known for his work predominantly in Telugu cinema. He starred in many landmark films in his seventy five-year career, becoming one of the most prominent figures in the history of Indian cinema. He is considered one of the greatest and most successful actors of Indian cinema. He was one of the instrumental figures in moving the Telugu cinema industry from Madras to Hyderabad in the early 1960s. The Nandi Award for Best Actor was commissioned by the Nandi Awards committee in 1977. The winner is awarded a "Silver Nandi", "Shri Rajendra Prasad Gold Medal", cash award and a commendation certificate. Venkatesh is the actor to have won the best actor award five times, followed Mahesh Babu with four.

The Nandi Award for Best Actress was commissioned in 1975. The winner is awarded a "Silver Nandi" and a cash award of 30,000.
