Nandita Roy (born April 3, 1955) is an Indian filmmaker, Editor and Screenwriter. She made her directorial debut with the film Icche (2011) along with her co-director Shiboprosad Mukherjee. The two have also directed Accident , Muktodhara , Alik Sukh , Ramdhanu , Bela Seshe , Haami , Praktan , Posto (film), Konntho, Gotro . [1] [2] She has been a part of several projects and has worked with many renowned directors.

Early life

Nandita Roy was born on April 3, 1955, in Mumbai. [3] She attended high school at St. Joseph's Convent High School in the suburb of Vile Parle, and is an economics graduate of Parle College. She began work as a primary schoolteacher in St. Joseph's Convent. She later studied for her postgrad in economics from University of Mumbai, Kalina. She married Nitish Roy in 1977. Currently she lives in Kolkata, India with her family.

Career

Roy began her professional career in 1978, as a glove-puppet operator and co-director on Agadoom-Bagadoom, a short puppet film for children. Through the 1980s and 1990s, Roy built up a broad resume in various films, working as an assistant editor, assistant director, set dresser, research assistant, and scriptwriter, learning many sides of the business.

Roy moved to television[ when? ] and became responsible for ETV Network's first nonfiction and fiction production house, and was the creative and administrative manager of their Bengali-language channel. She created 19 original nonfiction programs for the network, including the first Bengali women's magazine program, Sreemoti. Roy also started a series of one-hour television films by well-known directors.

Praktan was the highest-grossing Bengali film of 2016 and swept the West Bengal Film Journalist Awards including Most Popular Film. [6] Bela Seshe and Icche also had highly-successful theatrical runs of 250 and 125 days, respectively. Many of her films met with critical acclaim. Icche was screened at the Indian Panorama Film Festival, Accident was selected for the International Film Festival of Kerala, and Alik Sukh premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. The National Film Archive of India accepted Icche as part of their collection for cultural and educational purposes. Icche, Muktodhara and Ramdhanu were included in the BEd curriculum of Visva-Bharati University. Icche and Muktodhara have also been used by the Certificate Course on Legal and Psychological Counselling for Women in Distress.

He also serves as a partner at Windows Production. His film Praktan, bagged multiple National Awards and Alik Sukh was premiered at the Marche du Film section in Cannes Film Festival in 2013. His film Konttho was selected as the Indian entry for the Best International Feature Film at the 92nd Academy Awards but did not final Submission from India.

Posto is a 2017 Bengali Family drama film directed by Nandita Roy and Shiboprosad Mukherjee. The film features Soumitra Chatterjee, Jisshu Sengupta and Mimi Chakraborty. The film was released on 12 May 2017 in 100 theatres across West Bengal, India and overseas on the same day. The film received critical acclaim as it portrayed the relationships in a very subtle way. The film was remade in Hindi language by the same director-duo Nandita Roy and Shiboprosad Mukherjee named Shastry Virudh Shastry (2023) which is set to release on 3 November.

<i>Haami</i> 2018 Indian film

Haami is a 2018 Bengali film directed by Nandita Roy and Shiboprosad Mukherjee. The movie is produced by Windows and was distributed regionally by the same. As per the figures provided by trade magazine, Film Companion, it was the highest grosser in Bengali cinema in 2018. Haami is a tale of two friends, Bhutu and Chini, who come from entirely different backgrounds. Before Haami, Nandita Roy and Shiboprosad Mukherjee came up with Ramdhanu which also dealt with the story of harried parents and what they go through in order to put their children in good schools. Haami could well be considered as a sequel to this, where Laltu and Mitali's characters are played by the same cast i.e. Shiboprosad Mukherjee and Gargi Roy Chowdhury. The Malayalam rights of the movie were acquired by Rajesh Nair, who made Salt Mango Tree, based on the same film.

<i>Gotro</i> 2019 Bengali drama film

Gotro (transl.Clan) is a 2019 Indian Bengali-language emotional family drama film, directed, produced and co-written by Nandita Roy and Shiboprosad Mukherjee. It stars Anashua Majumdar, Nigel Akkara and Manali Dey, with Ambarish Bhattacharya, Saheb Chatterjee and Badshah Moitra. The film revolves around the relationship between Mukti Debi (Majumdar), a widow who lives alone in her mansion, with her caretaker Tareq (Akkara), an ex-convict and shows how their lives undergo a change.

The West Bengal Film Journalists' Association Award for Best Director is given yearly by WBFJA as a part of its annual West Bengal Film Journalists' Association Awards for Bengali films, to recognize the best director of the previous year.

Bohurupi (transl. Chameleon) is a 2024 Indian Bengali-language vigilante heist action thriller film written by Nandita Roy and directed by Nandita Roy & Shiboprosad Mukherjee. The film stars Shiboprosad Mukherjee, Abir Chatterjee, Ritabhari Chakraborty and Koushani Mukherjee in the lead roles. Produced by Nandita Roy and Shiboprosad Mukherjee under the banner of Windows, the film is based upon a chain of real life events in the timeline between 1998 and 2005.
