S.S.C. Napoli finished a creditable fourth in its first season without the club legend Diego Maradona in the squad. With the Argentinian having failed a doping test in the spring 1991, Napoli was facing an uphill battle, but coped remarkably well, actually improving on its fortunes from Maradona's final season with the club.
S.S.C. Napoli got extremely close to a shock relegation to Serie B, and only held on to its top-flight status by two points. This was just three years since the club led by playmaker and legend Diego Maradona won the domestic league title. It actually spent Christmas of 1992 in the relegation zone, and climbed out of it thanks to a strong January '93 run. The reason Napoli survived was the above-average offensive skills. Gianfranco Zola, Daniel Fonseca and Careca was a trio capable of leading any teams' attack, and the club looked set to suffer when Zola (Parma) and Careca (Japan) departed at the end of the season. Fonseca's season is mostly remembered for an extremely unusual five goals in one match, as Napoli beat Valencia 5-1 away from home in the UEFA Cup. Then it lost to Paris SG in the next round, rendering it was out of Europe.
S.S.C. Napoli performed about the same as it had in the 1993-94 season, finishing seventh in the championship, but having a better domestic cup run. Napoli also reached the Last 16 of the UEFA Cup, where it lost to Eintracht Frankfurt. The squad had been depleted due to losses of several offensive key players in the seasons before, so seventh in the domestic league would normally have been regarded as a positive result, but it was only after Vujadin Boškov had been appointed to lead the team in place of Vincenzo Guerini that Napoli could stay well clear of the relegation zone. Brazilian signing André Cruz was crucial to the defense, and also showed unusual offensive skills for a central defender, scoring several goals. Fabio Cannavaro also had a spectacular season, which ended with Parma buying the defender.
In the 1995-96 S.S.C. Napoli season, the club finished in the lower midfield of the table, once again missing out on the international competitions. Goalscoring was at a premium, but the tight defence led by Latin Americans Roberto Ayala and André Cruz, ensured that Napoli did not go close to relegation. Goalkeeper Giuseppe Taglialatela also strengthened his reputation with a solid season.
S.S.C. Napoli continued its steady decline with another lacklustre season. Once more, goalscoring was at a premium, with only 28 goals being scored in the 34 league games. Coach Luigi Simoni was sacked and replaced by youth team coach Vincenzo Montefusco, who led the team to the Coppa Italia final against Vicenza, where Napoli won at home thanks to Fabio Pecchia's goal, but lost 3-0 away from home, and therefore failed to win the trophy. The 13th place in the domestic league was the worst for 14 years, and one year on, Napoli was ultimately relegated.

S.S.C. Napoli crashed out of Serie A following a disastrous season. It only clinched 14 points out of 34 matches, despite having the services of several experienced Serie A players. Napoli went through four coaches over the course of the season, and hardly took a point in the second half of the season. Given the disastrous form of the team, Claudio Bellucci's ten goals were impressive, while thought top scorer Igor Protti was one of the largest disappointments of the entire series. The lack of defensive skills cost Napoli many points, and more than two goals were conceded on average. This was despite Roberto Ayala's brilliance, which earned him a transfer to A.C. Milan.
