Narayani Gupta (born 13 November 1942) is an Indian historian who was a professor of history at Jamia Millia Islamia University, New Delhi. She taught at Indraprastha College from 1966 before joining Jamia Millia Islamia University in 1988. From 1991 to 1995, she taught at the TVB School of Habitat Studies. She is the author of works on urban history, particularly the history of Delhi. [2]

Biography

Gupta is the third daughter of Narayani Menon and VKR Menon, an Indian Civil Services officer in Bihar state of British India. Growing up in Delhi after 1946, she could observe the rapid changes in the social fabric post-Partition and the planning of Independent India. She is married to historian Partha Sarathi Gupta.

Academic contributions

Her book Delhi between Two Empires, based on her doctoral thesis, was called "groundbreaking" by reviewers.[ citation needed ] She is a founder-member and former president (1986–88) of the Conservation Society of Delhi [3] which emerged out of the Environment Group. She was a member of Delhi's Urban Art Commission from 1992 to 1995, and again from 2004 to 2007. From 2004 to 2012, she was associated with the Indian National Trust for Cultural Heritage, [4] [5] as consultant on their Heritage Education programmes and their documentation centre.

Gupta has written history books for the National Book Trust and Orient Longman, and in 2019 edited a series of books on UNESCO world heritage sites.[ citation needed ] She headed the committee on middle school social science textbooks for the Delhi SCERT in 2002-04, was a member of NCERT's National Focus Group on Teaching of Social Sciences, [6] and editor of the History textbook for Class 11 (2005).

Activism and writing

She is a columnist for newspapers and online magazines like Indian Express , [7] Hindu, Times of India [8] etc and writes about historical matters and contemporary history.

She remains actively engaged with the conservation of Delhi's monuments and urban landscape. [9] [10] She is one of the people who took a stand on the issue of the redevelopment of Central Vista and filed a case in Supreme Court against it.

Saifuddin Kitchlew was an Indian independence activist, barrister, politician and later a leader of the peace movement. A member of Indian National Congress, he first became Punjab Provincial Congress Committee head and later the General Secretary of the All India Congress Committee in 1924. He is most remembered for the protests in Punjab after the implementation of Rowlatt Act in March 1919, after which on 10 April, he and another leader Satyapal, were secretly sent to Dharamsala. A public protest rally against their arrest and that of Gandhi, on 13 April 1919 at Jallianwala Bagh, Amritsar, led to the infamous Jallianwala Bagh massacre. He was also a founding member of Jamia Millia Islamia. He was awarded the Stalin Peace Prize in 1952.

Mohammad Ajmal Khan, better known as Hakim Ajmal Khan, was a physician in Delhi, India, and one of the founders of the Jamia Millia Islamia university in Delhi, India. He also founded another institution, Ayurvedic and Unani Tibbia College, better known as Tibbia College, situated in Karol Bagh, Delhi. He was the only Muslim to chair a session of the Hindu Mahasabha. He became the Jamia Millia Islamia's first chancellor in 1920 and remained in office until his death in 1927.

Education Department of the Government of Delhi is a premier body which looks into the educational affairs. The RTE right to education states that children from the age of 6 to 14 have to compulsorily be educated. 25% of the seats in all private schools are also reserved for the under-privileged children. Tertiary education is administrated by the Directorate of Higher Education.

Partha Sarathi Gupta was an Indian professor of British and European history at Delhi University and president of the Indian History Congress. He was firstborn son of Ashoka Gupta and Saibal Gupta, an Indian Civil Services officer in Bengal state of British India. His childhood memory of watching Mahatma Gandhi's walk through riot-torn Noakhali in 1946 where his mother joined in the walk had a long-lasting impact. He was awarded Eshan scholarship for the highest marks in West Bengal in Presidency College, Calcutta. Fellow students included Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences winner Amartya Sen and member of planning commission Sukhamoy Chakravarty in 1953.
