Nathaniel Otley (born 1996 or 1997) is a New Zealand composer, violinist and conductor.

Biography

Otley began playing the violin at the age of four. [1] He attended King's High School in Dunedin where he won an Otago Daily Times Class Act in 2015. [1] [2] He graduated from the University of Otago with a MusB (Hons) in performance violin and music composition. [3] [4] He played the violin in the Dunedin Symphony Orchestra, conducted the Dunedin Youth Orchestra and played and sang in several orchestras and choirs. [5] [4]

In 2020 Otley won a Fulbright General Graduate Award to study for a Masters of Arts in Musical Composition at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester. [3]

Awards

Otley has won three prizes in the Lilburn Trust Student Composition Awards: in 2016 he won the performance prize with his piece Concert Piece and in 2019 the composition and performance prizes for Recalibration. [6] [4] In 2019 Otley won the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra's Young Composers Award with his orchestral work Biosphere Degradation. [1]

In 2024 he won the SOUNZ Contemporary Award (Te Tohu Auaha) at the APRA awards for his composition the convergence of oceans. [7] [8] The piece, which is a reflection on the oceans surrounding New Zealand, was composed during his tenure as the composer in residence with the National Youth Orchestra in 2023. [7] [8] [9]

Otley is married to New Zealand composer Ihlara McIndoe. [9] [10]

The New Zealand Symphony Orchestra (NZSO) is a symphony orchestra based in Wellington, New Zealand. The national orchestra of New Zealand, the NZSO is an autonomous Crown entity owned by the New Zealand Government, per the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra Act 2004. It is currently based in the Michael Fowler Centre and has frequently performed in the adjacent Wellington Town Hall before it was closed in 2013. It also performs in Auckland, Christchurch and Dunedin.

The Mozart Fellowship is a composer residency attached to the Music Department of the University of Otago, one of the five Arts Fellowships at the university. It is the oldest full-time composition residency in New Zealand, and is currently the only position of its kind; the list of past fellows includes many of New Zealand's most notable composers. In 2013, Martin Lodge, Associate Professor and Convenor of the Waikato University Music Programme described the Mozart Fellowship as "New Zealand's premiere composer residency, being the longest established, best paid and most prestigious with the list of past Fellows a veritable who's who of New Zealand composers".

Kenneth Young is a composer, conductor, radio presenter and lecturer in composition, conducting and orchestration at the New Zealand School of Music, Massey University and Victoria University of Wellington. As a composer, Young has had works commissioned by New Zealand and Australian orchestras and arts organisations including the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra, Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra New Zealand International Arts Festival and Chamber Music New Zealand. He works as a freelance composer and is fully represented by SOUNZ: The Centre for New Zealand Music. In 1976, Young became the principal tuba for the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and first conducted the orchestra in 1985 becoming Conductor in Residence in 1993. In 2001, he resigned from the orchestra to become a full-time conductor, composer and recording artist for orchestras in New Zealand and Australia, as well as engagements in Japan and the United Kingdom. He is well known for his interpretation of Romantic, 20th Century, New Zealand and Australian orchestral repertoire and in 2012 conducted both the winning album, Angel at Ahipara and finalist album, Releasing the Angel, for Best Classical Album at the New Zealand Music Awards. The Philip Neill Memorial Prize is an annual prize administered by the University of Otago for excellence in original composition. The award is open to all past and present students of a university in New Zealand, except previous winners who are excluded for a period of five years.
