National freeway 6, also known as Shuishalian Freeway or Central East-West Freeway, is a freeway between Wufeng, Taichung and Puli, Nantou, and all of the main line was already open to traffic on 21 March 2009. The freeway runs parallel with provincial highway 14 for most of its length.
The length is about 37.6 km between Wufeng, Taichung and Puli, Nantou.

Its construction began on 25 March 2004. On 27 January 2008, the main line between Ailan IC and Puli terminal was open to traffic. Then, the main line between Wufeng JCT and East Caotun IC, and the East Caotun connection way were open to traffic on 27 December 2008. The other part of main line between east Caotun IC and Ailan IC was already open to traffic on 21 March 2009. Afterwards, Guoxing IC was open to traffic on 22 October 2009. Then, Jiuzheng IC was open to traffic on 31 January 2011. Beishan IC was completed on 21 November 2013.
There is a plan to extend the route further east to Hualien City. However, it is technically difficult due to the mountains between Puli, Nantou and Hualien City.

Taichung has approximately 2.83 million residents and is the second largest city of Taiwan, as well as the most populous city in Central Taiwan. It serves as the core of the Taichung–Changhua metropolitan area, the second largest metropolitan area in Taiwan.

National Freeway 3, also known as Formosa Freeway, is a freeway in Taiwan. It is the second north–south freeway in Taiwan, beginning in Keelung City at Jijin Interchange on the provincial highway 2 and ending in Linbian, Pingtung on the provincial highway 17. It is the longest freeway in Taiwan with a total length of 431.5 km (268.1 mi). The freeway is also the only one in Taiwan to have a spur route, Freeway 3A.
National freeway 4 is a freeway that begins in Qingshui District, Taichung at Provincial Highway 17 and ends in Tanzi District at Provincial Highway 74.
Provincial Highway 74, also known as the Kuaiguan-Wufeng Expressway (快官烏日線) or Taichung Ring Expressway (台中環線), is an expressway around Taichung City. It starts at Kuaiguan Interchange on Freeway No. 3 in Changhua City and ends at Wufeng Interchange on Freeway No. 3 in Wufeng District.
Provincial Highway 63 is a limited-access highway, which begins in Taichung at the intersection of Guoguang Road and Zhongming South Road and ends in Caotun, Nantou on Bixing Road. It is commonly known as Zhongtou (Taichung-Nantou) Highway.
The Baguashan Tunnel, on Provincial Highway No. 76, Taiwan, transverses Baguashan (八卦山) between Lincuo IC. (林厝交流道) and Zhongxing JCT. (中興系統交流道). The length of the north tube for westbound traffic is 4,928 m (3.062 mi). The length of the south tube for eastbound traffic is 4,935 m (3.066 mi). Connecting Yuanlin, Changhua and Caotun, Nantou, its opening significantly reduced the travel time between Changhua and Nantou.

Taiwan Provincial Highway No. 21 is a Provincial Highway in Taiwan that begins at Tianleng (天冷), Dongshi District, Taichung City, at the intersection with Provincial Highway No. 8, and ends at Tataka(塔塔加), where it is connected with Provincial Highway No. 18 in Yushan National Park. It is the primary highway to Sun Moon Lake, a popular tourist destination. The total length is 145 km.

Provincial Highway 3 is a 435.608km long Taiwanese highway that starts in Taipei and ends in Pingtung. Also known as Inner-Mountain Highway (內山公路), the road travels through mountainous towns in Western Taiwan and was the major route for the area until Freeway 3 was built.
Provincial Highway 14 is an east–west highway that connects Changhua City in Changhua County with Ren'ai, an aboriginal township in Nantou County. The highway is known as Zhongtan Highway (中潭公路) from Caotun to Puli, and Puwu Highway from Puli to Ren'ai. The total length is 99.0 kilometers.
Jiujiufeng is a nature reserve located at the border of Taichung City and Nantou County, spanning the cities of Caotun, Guoxing, Wufeng, and Taiping. The protected area contains many small, jagged peaks, hence the name.
