The National Olympic Committee of Sierra Leone (IOC code: SLE) is the National Olympic Committee representing Sierra Leone. It was created and recognised by the IOC in 1964. [1]
Sierra Leone made its debut at the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City where it was represented by three athletes. [2]
The modern Olympic Games or Olympics are the leading international sporting events featuring summer and winter sports competitions in which thousands of athletes from around the world participate in a variety of competitions. The 1968 Summer Olympics, officially known as the Games of the XIX Olympiad and commonly known as Mexico 1968, were an international multi-sport event held from 12 to 27 October 1968 in Mexico City, Mexico. These were the first Olympic Games to be staged in Latin America and the first to be staged in a Spanish-speaking country. They were also the first Games to use an all-weather (smooth) track for track and field events instead of the traditional cinder track, as well as the first example of the Olympics exclusively using electronic timekeeping equipment.
Sierra Leone competed at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece, from 13 to 29 August 2004. This was the nation's eighth appearance at the Summer Olympics since its debut in the 1968 Summer Olympics. The Sierra Leone delegation included two track and field athletes; Lamin Tucker and Hawanatu Bangura, both of whom were sprinters that were selected via winning an event in Freetown, as the nation had no athletes that met the "A" or "B" standards in any event. Bangura was selected as flag bearer for the opening ceremony. Neither of the two athletes progressed beyond the heats.
Sierra Leone sent a delegation to compete at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia from 15 September to 1 October 2000. This was the African nation's sixth time appearing at a Summer Olympic Games. The delegation consisted of three competitors, two track and field athletes; Alpha B. Kamara and Ekundayo Williams; and weightlifter Joseph Bellon. Neither of the track athletes advanced beyond the first round of their events, while Bellon finished 16th in the men's under 77 kg event.
Sierra Leone has sent athletes to every Summer Olympic Games since 1968 with the exception of 1972 and 1976, but the nation has yet to win an Olympic medal. No athletes from Sierra Leone have competed in any Winter Olympic Games.
The 2024 Summer Olympics, officially the Games of the XXXIII Olympiad and also known as Paris 2024, is an upcoming international multi-sport event scheduled to take place from 26 July to 11 August 2024 in Paris, France. Having previously hosted in 1900 and 1924, Paris will become the second city to host the Summer Olympics three times after London. The Games will mark the centenary of the Paris Games of 1924, and the sixth Olympic Games hosted by France. This will be the first of two consecutive Olympic games to be held in western Europe after the London Olympics, and will be followed by the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy.
Taiwan, officially the Republic of China (ROC), currently competes as "Chinese Taipei" (TPE) at the Olympic Games. The Republic of China, representing all pre-war China, participated at the Summer Olympic Games in 1932 and 1936, and, representing all of China including Taiwan, participated in the 1948 Summer Olympics. After the Chinese Civil War the ROC retreated to the island of Taiwan and only Taiwan-based athletes have competed in its team since then. Athletes of Taiwan participated at the Summer Olympic Games in 1956, 1960, 1964, 1968 and 1972 as Republic of China (ROC). The ROC boycotted the Summer Olympic Games in 1976 and 1980 until it returned to the 1984 Winter Games, and started participating as Chinese Taipei (TPE).
The 2014 Summer Youth Olympic Games, officially known as II Summer Youth Olympic Games, were the second Summer Youth Olympic Games, an international sports, education and cultural festival for teenagers, held from 16 to 28 August 2014 in Nanjing, Jiangsu, China. These were the first Youth Olympic Games held in China, making it the first country to host both regular and Youth Olympics following the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing.

Sierra Leone made its first and so far only Paralympic Games appearance at the 1996 Summer Paralympics in Atlanta, where it entered just one competitor in athletics. Kelley Marah, who was registered in four events but participated only in the javelin, and is the only person ever to have represented Sierra Leone at the Paralympic Games, did not win a medal.
Sierra Leone competed at the 2010 Summer Youth Olympics, the inaugural Youth Olympic Games, held in Singapore from 14 August to 26 August 2010. The nation was represented by the National Olympic Committee of Sierra Leone, which sent a total of three athletes to compete in one sport, athletics. The flagbearer at the opening ceremony for the nation was athlete Nenneh Barrie. Sierra Leone's Olympic team was one of the 106 that did not win a single medal at the Games.
Sierra Leone competed at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, from 27 July to 12 August 2012. This marked the nation's tenth appearance at the Summer Olympics since its debut in the 1968 Summer Olympics. The Sierra Leone delegation included two track and field athletes; Ibrahim Turay, a sprinter and Ola Sesay, a long jumper. Sesay and Turay were selected as flag bearers for the opening and closing ceremonies respectively. Neither of the two athletes progressed beyond the first round.
The Eswatini Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association (EOCGA), previously the Swaziland Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association, is the National Olympic Committee representing Eswatini. It was created in 1968 and officially recognised by the International Olympic Committee in 1972. Following the country's name change in April 2018 the Swaziland Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association changed its name to the Eswatini Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association.
The Namibian National Olympic Committee is the National Olympic Committee representing Namibia. It was created in 1990 and recognised by the IOC in 1992
The Tanzania Olympic Committee is the National Olympic Committee representing Tanzania. It was created and recognised by the IOC in 1968
The National Olympic Committee of Zambia is the National Olympic Committee representing Zambia. It was created in 1951 as the National Olympic Committee of Northern Rhodesia and recognised by the IOC in 1963.
The National Olympic Committee – Kenya is the National Olympic Committee representing Kenya. It was created in 1955 and recognised by the IOC that same year.
Sierra Leone competed at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from 5 to 21 August 2016. This was the nation's eleventh appearance at the Summer Olympics since its debut in 1968, except for two occasions. Sierra Leone failed to register any athletes at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, and also joined the rest of the African nations to boycott the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal.
Sierra Leone competed at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. Originally scheduled to take place from 24 July to 9 August 2020, the Games were postponed to 23 July to 8 August 2021, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It was the nation's twelfth appearance at the Summer Olympics having appeared at all but two Games since its debut in 1968; Sierra Leone failed to register any athletes at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, and also joined the rest of the African nations to boycott the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal.
