On April 10, 2021, fighters from the Ta'ang National Liberation Army (TNLA) and Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA) attacked a police station controlled by Tatmadaw, killing fourteen police officers. The Naungmon ambush was the first attack by the 3BA during the Myanmar civil war and after the 2021 Myanmar coup d'état.
On February 1, 2021, the Tatmadaw led by Min Aung Hlaing overthrew the democratically elected Burmese government of Aung San Suu Kyi, sparking nationwide protests and subsequent crackdowns by Burmese police and soldiers. The coup d'etat renewed recruitment for the various ethnic armed organizations across the country, including the Three Brotherhood Alliance composed of the TNLA, MNDAA, and Arakan Army (AA), based in northern Shan State, Kokang, and Rakhine State respectively. [1] The 3BA had been waging a low-level insurgency since 2020, and had helped the AA during their offensives fending off the Tatmadaw during the Rohingya genocide in 2017 and 2018. [2] At the start of the coup d'etat, many other ethnic armed organizations across Myanmar had fought back against the Tatmadaw since day one, although the 3BA was in a truce with the Tatmadaw and did not initially fight them. Armed men shot at and torched the Naungmon police outpost while Tatmadaw soldiers and police officers were inside of it at around 7 am on April 10, sparking a firefight. [1] [4] Residents who witnessed the attack stated that they believed it was the TNLA and MNDAA who attacked the outpost, and that they had arrived suddenly. [5] [6] Tatmadaw helicopters arrived on scene as reinforcements at around 8 a.m., by which point the fighters had fled. [5] At around 12 p.m. that same day, clashes broke out in the village of Kheyning in between Naungmon and Lashio as the Tatmadaw went on the offensive. [5] The fire at the police outpost continued until midday on April 11, and several vehicles and a lot of equipment was damaged or destroyed. [1] [4] [5]
Witnesses stated that eight police officers had been killed when they arrived on scene, and Shan News Agency stated that ten were killed. Shwe Phee Myay News, a local media outlet, stated that fourteen officers were killed, two were missing, and seven family members of the officers were injured. [1] [4] A spokesman for the TNLA stated that the group was still investigating the attack, and denied responsibility for it. [4] Tatmadaw officers fled to the village of Panning. [4] Burmese forces also strengthened curfews and security in Lashio in preparation for attacks by the TNLA. [6]
The Myanmar Army is the largest branch of the Tatmadaw, the armed forces of Myanmar, and has the primary responsibility of conducting land-based military operations. The Myanmar Army maintains the second largest active force in Southeast Asia after the People's Army of Vietnam. It has clashed against ethnic and political insurgents since its inception in 1948.
Insurgencies have been ongoing in Myanmar since 1948, when the country, then known as Burma, gained independence from the United Kingdom. It has largely been an ethnic conflict, with ethnic armed groups fighting Myanmar's armed forces, the Tatmadaw, for self-determination. Despite numerous ceasefires and the creation of autonomous self-administered zones in 2008, armed groups continue to call for independence, increased autonomy, or federalisation. The Arakan Army, sometimes referred to as the Arakha Army, is an ethno-nationalist armed organisation based in Rakhine State (Arakan). Founded in April 2009, the AA is the military wing of the United League of Arakan (ULA). The Arakan Army are followers of Theravada Buddhism. It is currently led by Commander-in-Chief Major General Twan Mrat Naing and vice deputy commander-in-chief Brigadier General Nyo Twan Awng. The Arakan Army states that the objective of its armed revolution is to restore the sovereignty of the Arakan people. It was declared a terrorist organization in 2020 by Myanmar, and again by the State Administration Council junta in 2024.
The Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA) is an armed resistance group in the Kokang region of Myanmar (Burma). The army has existed since 1989, having been the first one to sign a ceasefire agreement with the Burmese government. The ceasefire lasted for about two decades.
Violent clashes have been ongoing in the northern part of Myanmar's Rakhine State since October 2016. Insurgent attacks by the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA) have led to sectarian violence perpetrated by Myanmar's military and the local Buddhist population against predominantly Muslim Rohingya civilians. The conflict has sparked international outcry and was described as an ethnic cleansing by the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. In August 2017, the situation worsened and hundreds of thousands of refugees fled Myanmar into Bangladesh, with an estimated 500,000 refugees having arrived by 27 September 2017. In January 2019, Arakan Army insurgents raided border police posts in Buthidaung Township, joining the conflict and beginning their military campaign in northern Rakhine State against the Burmese military.

The People's Defence Force is the armed wing of the National Unity Government in Myanmar. The armed wing was formed by the NUG from youths and pro-democracy activists on 5 May 2021 in response to the coup d'état that occurred on 1 February 2021 that put the military junta and their armed wing the Tatmadaw in power. The military junta designated it as a terrorist organisation on 8 May 2021. In October 2021, NUG's Ministry of Defence announced that it had formed a central committee to coordinate military operations across the country.

The Myanmar Civil War, also known as the Burmese Civil War, Burmese Spring Revolution, or People's Defensive War, is an ongoing civil war following Myanmar's long-running insurgencies, which escalated significantly in response to the 2021 military coup d'état and the subsequent violent crackdown on anti-coup protests. On 11 April 2023, the Myanmar Air Force massacred at least 165 people in the village of Pazigyi, Kantbalu Township, which is located 92 miles (148 km) west of Mandalay, Myanmar's second largest city. The air force used fighter jets and helicopters to attack a large crowd of people gathering for the opening of a local office of an opposition movement. The Pazigyi attack was the junta's deadliest attack since seizing power in the 2021 coup d'état.
The 2021 Battle of Loikaw was an engagement between the Tatmadaw against ethnic Karenni militias and local PDF civilian guerrillas. The battle began on 21 May 2021, and was one of the first engagements of the current Myanmar Civil War in Kayah State.
The 2022 Battle of Loikaw was a battle for the city of Loikaw, in Myanmar's Kayah State, between January and July 2022. The State Administration Council's Tatmadaw forces attacked the city at the beginning of 2022, which was being held by the Karenni Nationalities Defence Force and local People's Defence Force groups. The fighting caused over 90,000 people in Loikaw Township to flee.
The First Battle of Demoso began on May 21, 2021, between the forces of the State Administration Council junta and Karenni separatist groups allied with the anti-junta People's Defence Force (PDF) during the 2021 Myanmar civil war. The battle took place over the span of a few weeks in the city of Demoso and surrounding villages, eventually ending in a ceasefire between the two parties.
