Wrestling career

Zanganeh wrestled for club Atrak Khorasan and represented Iran on the world stage.

During the 2018 Senior U23 World Championships in Bucharest Zanganeh earned a bronze medal after defeating Azerbaijani wrestler Ismail Abdullaev. [1]

At the 2019 U-23 Senior Asian Championships Zanganeh won a silver medal after beating opponents from Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, and Kazakhstan before facing defeat in the finals. [2]

The Takhti freestyle wrestling tournament took place on 7 and 8 Feb. 2019 with representatives from Azerbaijan, Turkey, Russia, Armenia, Hungary, the Netherlands, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan and Georgia. Zanganeh placed third and was a part of Iran's overall victory in the tournament. [3]

Arrest and asylum

Zanganeh was shot at anti-government rally in Tehran and was subsequently arrested after being taken to hospital. [4] He was detained for 15 days and was eventually released from Fashafaviye prison. [4] Zanganeh was immediately released from his club Atrak Khorasan and was unable to wrestle for Iran. [5] After the arrest was made public, Zanganeh emigrated to Canada and hopes to resume his wrestling career representing Canada. [6]

Mixed martial arts career

Navid began his MMA career in Vancouver, Canada. His head coach is currently Dan Golkar out of Scorpion MMA in Pitt Meadows, British Columbia.

Jordan Ernest Burroughs is an American freestyle wrestler and former folkstyle wrestler who currently competes at 79 kilograms, and previously competed at 74 kilos. In freestyle, he was the 2012 Olympic Gold medalist, is the reigning and a five-time World Champion, three-time Pan American Games Gold medalist, four-time Pan American champion and four-time US Open National Champion, making the US World or Olympic Team in ten occasions. In folkstyle, Burroughs was a two-time NCAA Division I champion for the Nebraska Cornhuskers and was awarded the Dan Hodge Trophy in 2012. Burroughs is widely known for his double leg takedown and is considered one of the greatest American freestyle wrestlers of all time.

Bekzod Makhamadzhonovich Abdurakhmonov is an Uzbekistani freestyle wrestler and mixed martial artist. He won the gold medal at the 2014 Asian Games in the Men's 70 kg Freestyle wrestling. At the 2016 Olympics he beat former gold medalist Jordan Burroughs of the United States 11-1, but lost in the bronze-medal match to Jabrayil Hasanov of Azerbaijan. The 2021 Poland Open was a sport wrestling event held in Warsaw, Poland between 8 and 13 June 2021. It served as the last United World Wrestling Ranking Series event of the year and played a role with regard to the 2020 Summer Olympics and 2021 World Championships' seeding. The event consisted of three competitions: the Waclaw Ziolkowski Memorial, Wladyslaw Pytlasinski Cup and Poland Open.

Sardar Pashaei was a national wrestler, medalist and coach of the Iranian national youth wrestling team. He won the Asian Youth Wrestling Championship in 1998 in Kazakhstan and the same year won the World Youth Wrestling Championship in Cairo and won the gold medal. He currently lives in the United States and is one of the main leaders of the Navid Afkari campaign.
