Gama, formerly Navya, is a French company specialized in the design and construction of autonomous and electric vehicles. The company was acquired from receivership in April 2023 by autonomous vehicle manufacturer Gaussin, and semiconductor manufacturer Macnica, and changed its name to Gaussin-Macnica-Mobility, Gama for short. [4]

In June 2014, Christophe Sapet, co-founder of the companies Infogrames and Infonie, joined the investment fund Robolution Capital to take over the assets of the company Induct, then in liquidation.

Induct launched Navia, a self-driving electric van. This prototype was demonstrated at the 2014 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas [5] [6] and was tested on the site of the Civaux Nuclear Power Plant in June 2015.

Six engineers remained in the new structure renamed Navya, based between Paris and Lyon. One year after the company's takeover, the new company launched Arma, the first standalone production vehicle.

In 2016 in Lyon, an experimental service of electric and autonomous minibus service was launched in the Confluence district.

A Navya driverless shuttle is operating in downtown Las Vegas. The city of Las Vegas and Keolis initially partnered on a short term deployment in January 2017, which has been followed by a year-long pilot sponsored by AAA of Northern California, Nevada & Utah for a 0.6 mile loop involving eight intersections and connected infrastructure. On November 8, 2017, the shuttle was involved in a minor incident when it was grazed by a delivery truck. The human driver was found to be at fault. [7] As of May 2018, 25,000 passengers had ridden the AAA Self-Driving Shuttle. The current AAA sponsored pilot program is highlighted under Transportation in Las Vegas.

Navya has self-driving vehicles being piloted in Singapore. [8]

In April 2019, Navya self-driving buses enter commercial service in downtown Oslo, Norway's capital. [9]

In April 2020, Navaya was adopted to a Japanese town of Sakai as the country's first public service of autonomous mobility on open roads. [10] And, Sakai town started operating the service in November. In August 2021, Softbank backed Boldly announced that they decided to roll out more stops in Sakai after the successful test run. [11]

In June 2021 Etienne Hermite stepped down as CEO and was replaced by Pierre Lahutte [12]

In July 2021, Navya received 7.5m Euros of Subsidies from the Government of France to develop further Projects [13]

In September 2021, Navya and Darwin launched the first autonomous shuttle project on Public Roads in the UK [14]

In September 2021, Navya also began testing its new Autonom Tract 135 in with French Logistics Company Geodis. [15] The Autonom Tract is an autonomous tractor for baggage handling.

Navya was put in receivership in 1 February 2023. [16] The company was acquired from receivership in April 2023 by autonomous vehicle manufacturer Gaussin, and semiconductor manufacturer Macnica, and changed its name to Gaussin Macnica Mobility. [4]

Experiments have been conducted on self-driving cars since 1939; promising trials took place in the 1950s and work has proceeded since then. The first self-sufficient and truly autonomous cars appeared in the 1980s, with Carnegie Mellon University's Navlab and ALV projects in 1984 and Mercedes-Benz and Bundeswehr University Munich's Eureka Prometheus Project in 1987. Since then, numerous major companies and research organizations have developed working autonomous vehicles including Mercedes-Benz, General Motors, Continental Automotive Systems, Autoliv Inc., Bosch, Nissan, Toyota, Audi, Volvo, Vislab from University of Parma, Oxford University and Google. In July 2013, Vislab demonstrated BRAiVE, a vehicle that moved autonomously on a mixed traffic route open to public traffic.

From 2014 until 2024, Apple Inc. undertook a research and development effort to develop an electric and self-driving car, codenamed "Project Titan". Apple never openly discussed any of its automotive research, but around 5,000 employees were reported to be working on the project as of 2018. In May 2018, Apple reportedly partnered with Volkswagen to produce an autonomous employee shuttle van based on the T6 Transporter commercial vehicle platform. In August 2018, the BBC reported that Apple had 66 road-registered driverless cars, with 111 drivers registered to operate those cars. In 2020, it was believed that Apple was still working on self-driving related hardware, software and service as a potential product, instead of actual Apple-branded cars. In December 2020, Reuters reported that Apple was planning on a possible launch date of 2024, but analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claimed it would not be launched before 2025 and might not be launched until 2028 or later.

A robotaxi, also known as robo-taxi, self-driving taxi or driverless taxi, is an autonomous car operated for a ridesharing company.

Mobility as a service (MaaS) is a type of service that, through a joint digital channel, enables users to plan, book, and pay for multiple types of mobility services. The concept describes a shift away from personally-owned modes of transportation and towards mobility provided as a service. This is enabled by combining transportation services from public and private transportation providers through a unified gateway that creates and manages the trip, which users can pay for with a single account. Users can pay per trip or a monthly fee for a limited distance. The key concept behind MaaS is to offer travelers mobility solutions based on their travel needs.

Einride AB is a Swedish transport company based in Stockholm, Sweden, specializing in electric and self-driving vehicles. The electric trucks are remotely controlled by drivers, and are notable for their lack of a driver's cab.

Zoox, Inc. is a subsidiary of Amazon developing autonomous vehicles that provide mobility as a service. It is headquartered in Foster City, California and has offices of operations in the San Francisco Bay Area and Seattle, Washington. Zoox sits in the Amazon Devices & Services organization alongside other Amazon units like Amazon Lab126, Amazon Alexa, and Kuiper Systems.

Yandex self-driving car is an autonomous car project of the Russian-based technology company Yandex. The first driverless prototype launched in May 2017. As of 2018, functional service was launched in Russia with prototypes also being tested in Israel and the United States. In 2019, Yandex revealed autonomous delivery robots based on the same technology stack as the company's self-driving cars. Since 2020, autonomous robots have been delivering food, groceries and parcels in Russia and the United States. In 2020, the self-driving project was spun-off into a standalone company under the name of Yandex Self-Driving Group.

The Sony Vision-S is an all-electric automobile platform that was developed by Sony, with the first model unveiled at the 2020 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas as the Vision-S Concept. When the second concept was unveiled in 2022 as the Vision-S 02, the original concept was retroactively renamed to Vision-S 01. Sony plans to use the Vision-S platform to develop future electric vehicles under a new wholly-owned subsidiary, Sony Mobility Inc., which will assume responsibility for the Vision-S platform and vehicle development in the spring of 2022. The Vision-S platform is fully electric and designed to emphasize the user experience of autonomous driving, as well as accommodate the growth of technology in future models.

Motional is an American autonomous vehicle company founded in March 2020 as a joint venture between automaker Hyundai Motor Group and auto supplier Aptiv. Headquartered in Boston, Massachusetts, Motional also maintains operations in Pittsburgh, Singapore, Las Vegas, and Los Angeles. Motional began testing its newest generation of vehicles in Las Vegas, Nevada, in February 2021, and also operates vehicles in Pittsburgh and Santa Monica, California.

Regulation of self-driving cars, autonomous vehicles and automated driving system is an increasingly relevant topic in the automotive industry strongly related to the success of the actual technology. Multiple countries have passed local legislation and agreed on standards for the introduction of autonomous cars.
