Nelliady is a town in Jaffna District, Sri Lanka. It is one of the busiest towns in Jaffna district.
After many coastal areas of Sri Lanka were devastated by the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami many people settled further inland, in towns including Nelliady.
Nelliady is also known as the place where the LTTE's first Black Tiger Captain Miller drove an explosive laden truck on Sri Lanka Army (SLA) troops garrisoned at Nelliyadi Central College, killing himself and between 39 and 100 Sri Lankan soldiers on 5th July 1987.
It is widely believed that Nelliady (நெல்லியடி) is a compound word derived from two words: 'Nelli' (நெல்லி) which is a type of plant/tree and 'Ady' (அடி) which is a locative suffix, meaning 'locality'. Hence, Nelliady (நெல்லியடி) can be translated as 'the locality of the Nelli tree'. [1] [2]

Manipay or Maanippaai is a town in the northern Jaffna District of Sri Lanka. The original name of Manipay is Periyapulam. It was a mission location when the American Ceylon Mission (ACM) came to Sri Lanka in the 19th century. Dr. Samuel Fisk Green founded the Green Memorial Hospital in 1864 in this village. It was also known as Manipai. There are number of schools in the village, some of which were founded by ACM. The 104-year-old Manipay Hindu College and the 53-year-old Manipay Hindu Ladies College, both High Schools, are prominent. The village also contains Hindu temples and churches. The Manipay Maruthady Pillaiyar Temple stands out.

The Battle of Nelliady took place during the early stages of the Sri Lankan Civil War. It occurred on 5 July 1987, when a force of 50 LTTE militants assaulted the Sri Lanka Army Camp located in the Nelliady Central College in the town of Nelliady in the Jaffna District in northern Sri Lanka. The attack was the bloodiest battle for the Sri Lankan forces since the Vadamarachchi Operation in June 1987, which cleared the area of Nelliady of LTTE militants. The attack on Nelliady army camp resulted in the Sri Lankan forces suffering 19 killed and 31 wounded, while LTTE executed its first suicide bombing which was carried out by Captain Miller.
