Nengi Adoki (born 17 January 1990) is a Nigerian actress. She is known for her roles in Nollywood films such as Juju Stories and Chatroom, and web series such as The Men's Club. She was named one of the Top Nollywood actors in 2021, and is an activist for women's issues and police brutality in Nigeria. [1] [2] [3]

Personal life

Nengi Adoki was born on 17 January 1990 in Port-Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria. [4] [5] She was raised in Toronto, Canada and received her B.A. in Performing Arts and Information Technology from the University of Toronto in 2013. While at the University of Toronto, she directed and performed in theater productions, including the Afrocentric cultural show Sync Afrique, which was performed in Mississauga annually from 2009 to 2014. [6] [4] [7] Adoki received the African Scholars' Global Impact Award from the University of Toronto in 2019. [8] In 2014, she received a certificate in performing arts from Sheridan College in Oakville, Ontario. [5]

Career

After graduating from Sheridan College, Adoki returned to Nigeria to focus on her acting career. [3] Her debut television role was as a minor character in the final season of Lost Girl. [3] In 2016, she performed in Bolanle Austen-Peter's Wakaa! The Musical, the first Nigerian musical shown at London's West End. [9] In 2018, she starred in the television series Forbidden. [10] She has also appeared in other theatrical productions such as Heartbeat the Musical and No More Lies. [11] [12]

In 2021, Adoki made her film debut as Joy in the third installment of Juju Stories, an anthology film directed by C.J. Obasi, Abba Makama, and Michael Omunua. [13] [14] She received a prize for acting at the Future Awards Africa in 2022 for her performance. [15] [16] [17] She also appeared in several web and television series, primarily on RedTV, including Back to School, The Men's Club, Inspector K, and Baby Drama. [3] [2] [18] Adoki began developing her own comedy web series, The Most Toasted Girl in 2018, which premiered in 2020. [19] [7] The series is based on real experiences dating in Lagos. [20]

In 2022, Adoki played the lead role in Chike Ibekwe's Chatroom, a movie about gender-based violence in Lagos, and appeared in the second season of the show Little Black Book. [21] [22] [23] [24] She also starred in the 2023 film The Trade.[ citation needed ]

Introducing the Kujus is a 2020 Nigerian comedy-drama film directed by Biodun Stephen and produced by Winifred Okpapi. The film stars Bisola Aiyeola, who co-produced the film. It also features Timini Egbuson, Femi Jacobs, Bimbo Ademoye, Sophie Alakija and Mimi Onalaja and is set in Badagry. The movie focuses on one young woman's love for her family, and how this love reunites her family and ends old feuds. It was released on 27 November 2020. In its opening week, the film grossed ₦10 million. Introducing the Kujus is suitable for family viewing but parental guidance is advised.

Ayinla is a musical eponymous film based on the life of Ayinla Yusuf popularly known as Ayinla Omowura, an Apala musician who was stabbed to death by his manager named Bayewu in a bar fight on 6 May 1980 at Abeokuta. The film premiered on 13 June 2021 in Lagos and was released to theatres on 18 June 2021. Directed by Tunde Kelani, the film was set in the 1970s and early 1980s and shot in Abeokuta, Ogun State. Lateef Adedimeji assumed the role of Ayinla, starring alongside Omowumi Dada, Bimbo Manuel, Ade Laoye, Kunle Afolayan, Bimbo Ademoye and Mr Macaroni. The film was scripted by Kehinde Joseph and directed by Adebayo Tijani.
