Never Ever is the debut EP by the New York City rock band Weep, released in 2008 through Astro-Base Go Recordings and distributed by Projekt Records.
Prior to forming Weep, Eric "Doc" Hammer had performed in the gothic rock acts Requiem in White from 1985 to 1995 and Mors Syphilitica from 1995 to 2002, both with his then-wife Lisa Hammer on vocals. [1] Over the next several years he continued to write music, while also working as a writer and voice actor on the animated television series The Venture Bros. beginning in 2004. In 2008 he was approached by keyboard player Alex Dziena with the idea of starting a new band to perform songs Hammer had written. [2] Dziena recruited bassist Fred Macaraeg and drummer Bill Kovalcik for the project, and the group began rehearsing. [2] Hammer played guitar and sang, a departure from his previous acts which had featured operatic female vocals. [3] He was initially unsure of his vocal abilities, but took on the duty despite this. [2] Never Ever was produced and mastered by Hammer and released in 2008 through Astro-Base Go, his animation company with Venture Bros. co-writer Christopher McCulloch, and distributed by his former label Projekt Records. Critical response to Never Ever was generally positive. Less Lee Moore of Popshifter remarked that fans of Hammer's work on The Venture Bros. "[would] be wrong to pretend to like Never Ever simply because Doc Hammer has a terrific sense of humor. Those fans will probably be quite surprised to find they like it because it's actually a good album." [7] He noted the influence of post-punk, shoegazing, gothic rock, and new wave acts such as My Bloody Valentine, The Sisters of Mercy, Cocteau Twins, The Cure, and Modern English in the songs. [7] He praised Kovalcik's drum sound and Hammer's vocals, describing the latter as "gravelly", "ragged", "wistful", "robotic", and "detached", drawing a comparison to Daniel Ash. [7] Jack Shear of Liarsociety gave the EP four and a half out of five stars, noting the distinction between Weep and Hammer's past projects: "Whereas Requiem in White and Mors Syphilitica both relied upon layers of sound as the backdrop for operatic female vocals, Weep focuses on a driving combination of gothic rock and shoegaze sensibilities and features Hammer’s own reverberating, understated vocals. Never Ever shows the influence of 80s post-punk, but has enough subtle embellishments to make this more than a retread." [3] Jared Weiss of View from Heaven remarked that the "dark tone and fuzzy sound" of the music worked well with Hammer's vocals, and named "Lay There and Drown" and "Su Promesa" as highlights of the EP. Shoegaze is a subgenre of indie and alternative rock characterized by its ethereal mixture of obscured vocals, guitar distortion and effects, feedback, and overwhelming volume. It emerged in Ireland and the United Kingdom in the late 1980s among neo-psychedelic groups who usually stood motionless during live performances in a detached, non-confrontational state. The name comes from the heavy use of effects pedals, as the performers were often looking down at their pedals during concerts.
Dream pop is a subgenre of alternative rock and neo-psychedelia that emphasizes atmosphere and sonic texture as much as pop melody. Common characteristics include breathy vocals, dense productions, and effects such as reverb, echo, tremolo, and chorus. It often overlaps with the related genre of shoegaze, and the two genre terms have at times been used interchangeably.
Aenima is a Portuguese dark wave, rock band formed in Almada in 1997. The name of the band is a play on the Latin word anima, meaning "soul". The band is notable for its guitar-based ambient sound and clear female vocals.
Cradle of Filth are an English extreme metal band formed in Suffolk in 1991. The band's musical style evolved originally from black metal to a cleaner and more "produced" amalgam of gothic metal, symphonic metal and other metal genres. Their lyrical themes and imagery are heavily influenced by Gothic literature, poetry, mythology and horror films. The band consists of its founding member, vocalist Dani Filth, drummer Martin 'Marthus' Škaroupka, bassist Daniel Firth, guitarists Marek 'Ashok' Šmerda and Donny Burbage, and keyboardist Zoe Marie Federoff.
Dhani Harrison is an English musician, composer and singer-songwriter. He is the only child of George and Olivia Harrison. Dhani debuted as a professional musician assisting in recording his father's final album, Brainwashed, and completing it with the assistance of Jeff Lynne after his father's death in November 2001. Harrison formed his own band, thenewno2, in 2002 and has performed at festivals, including Coachella, where Spin magazine dubbed their performance as one of the "best debut performances of the festival." The band also played Lollapalooza three times, with Harrison joining the festival's founder Perry Farrell on a cover of The Velvet Underground's "Sweet Jane" at 2010's event. In 2017, Harrison released his debut solo album IN///PARALLEL. The 2019 film IN///PARALIVE, showcases the live version of his debut solo album and was recorded in the round at Henson Studios in Los Angeles. Harrison's latest single, "Motorways ", was described by Rolling Stone as "a psychedelic track with a robust beat".
Projekt is a Portland, Oregon-based independent record label started by Sam Rosenthal in 1983. Projekt releases music in the styles of darkwave, ambient, shoegaze, gothic rock, ethereal, dream-pop, and dark cabaret. Projekt artists include Sam Rosenthal's own Black Tape for a Blue Girl, Steve Roach, Voltaire, Erik Wøllo, Unto Ashes, Weep Mira, and Android Lust.
Lisa Hammer is an American filmmaker, actress, composer and singer and is the sister of director James Merendino. She graduated from Emerson College, with a BS in Film. She founded the Blessed Elysium Motion Picture Company, which produces German Expressionist films. Such works include Pus$bucket and Crawley, a collaboration with Ben Edlund and Doc Hammer, her ex-husband. She has also contributed to Joanie4Jackie, a film anthology project run by Miranda July, which featured Hammer's film Empire of Ache starring Dame Darcy.
Virgin Black is an Australian symphonic gothic and doom metal band. The band was signed to The End Records and Germany's Massacre Records, through which it released four albums and one EP. A fifth album, originally planned for release in 2006, was released independently in 2018. As of 2021, they are signed to Australian record label, Dark Escapes Music. Formed in 1995 in Adelaide, they have achieved international acclaim during their career, receiving praise from such magazines as Orkus, Metal Hammer, Legacy and The Village Voice.
Eric Hammer, known professionally as Doc Hammer, is an American voice actor, musician, writer and artist. He performed in the gothic rock bands Requiem in White from 1985 to 1995 and Mors Syphilitica from 1995 to 2002, both with his then-wife Lisa Hammer. His film credits include a number of Lisa's projects—released through their own production company Blessed Elysium—in which he participated as a writer, actor, composer, designer, and visual effects artist. He also composed the music for the 1997 film A, B, C... Manhattan. He and Christopher McCulloch are the co-creators, writers, and editors of the animated television series The Venture Bros. (2004–2020), in which Hammer voices several recurring characters including Billy Quizboy, Henchman 21, Dr. Mrs. The Monarch, and Dermott Fictel. The show is produced through Hammer and McCulloch's company Astro-Base Go. Hammer is also the guitarist and lead vocalist of the band Weep, which formed in 2008. In 2021, Hammer founded the band Pageant Girls with vocalist Ivy Jaff.
Thomas Gabriel Fischer, also known by his stage names of Tom G. Warrior and Satanic Slaughter, is a Swiss metal musician. He led the groups Hellhammer and Celtic Frost, and today is the frontman of the band Triptykon.
Pro-jekt are an English rock band who have sometimes described themselves as gothic metal, although it has been noted that they have a darkwave sound. They formed in January 2000, in Derbyshire, England. They engineered and financed their own demo album, and, in August 2001, signed to Nightbreed Recordings Ltd. Pro-jekt released their debut album on Nightbreed Recordings in April 2002. On the live circuit, the band played over 90 performances, including touring with Mortiis and Carl McCoy's side project, The Last Rites. In 2003, Pro-jekt completed a full UK tour and held live dates in Italy, Belgium and France.
Ethereal wave, also called ethereal darkwave, ethereal goth or simply ethereal, is a subgenre of dark wave music that is variously described as "gothic", "romantic", and "otherworldly". Developed in the early 1980s in the UK as an outgrowth of gothic rock, ethereal wave was mainly represented by 4AD bands such as Cocteau Twins, This Mortal Coil, and early guitar-driven Dead Can Dance.
Mors Syphilitica was an American gothic rock/ethereal band formed in 1995 in New York City by Lisa Hammer and Eric Hammer after the breakup of their prior band Requiem in White. Their music combined often-surreal lyrics with unusual instruments such as mandolin and banjo, as well more conventional instruments like guitar. Lisa Hammer's operatic vocals gave Mors Syphilitica's music a distinctive powerful, sweeping quality. On record, all of the instruments were played by Eric Hammer; in concert, they were accompanied by live drummers and bass players.

Watchmen Recording Studios is a music recording facility owned and operated by Doug White, located in Lockport, New York, U.S. The studio opened to the public in 1995, and as of 2013 over 4,000 bands and artists have recorded at the location. These include regional and national acts such as Gym Class Heroes, Psyopus, The Bunny The Bear, and Brutal Truth, as well as labels such as Relapse Records, Victory Records, Metal Blade Records, Willowtip Records and Century Media Records.
Weep is an American rock band from New York City whose music combines elements of ethereal wave, gothic rock, shoegaze, post-punk and synthpop. Formed in 2008 by singer and guitarist Eric "Doc" Hammer, the band's lineup also includes bass guitarist Fred Macaraeg, keyboardist Alex Dziena and drummer Bill Kovalcik. Their debut EP, Never Ever, was released in 2008 by Hammer's Astro-Base Go company and Projekt Records, followed by the full-length albums Worn Thin (2010), Alate (2012) and Weep (2014).

It was released in 2010 through Projekt Records. Singer, guitarist, and songwriter Doc Hammer remarked on the oddity of the gothic rock and shoegaze band producing a dance record:
I had no idea that this would work as well as it did. I mean, we're not a huge fans of dance music. I guess that's what made us want to do this; a rock band that loves the old Tommy Boy Records sound, and loves old Depeche Mode and stuff like that are probably the best candidates for making a unique dance recording. Ya know? We got nothing to lose! Nobody expects us to do this.
Principe Valiente is a Swedish band based in Stockholm. Their sound may partly be the result of a variety of elements inspired by the minimalism of certain post-punk acts and the lushness of shoegazing, but their music has frequently been labelled "dark pop".
Spunsugar is a shoegaze band from Malmö, Sweden. It consists of band members Cordelia Moreau, Elin Ramstedt and Felix Sjöström. The trio describes themselves as 'an alternative rock band with shoegaze influences'. Their music has a higher tempo than that of their peer shoegazing bands. The room for guitar riffs and the use of a drum machine further define their sound.
