The New Bern Historic District is a national historic district located at New Bern, Craven County, North Carolina. As of 2003 the district contained 492 contributing structures with construction dates ranging from the early 1800s to the mid-20th century. The district contains notable examples of buildings in the Federal and Late Victorian styles. [2] [3]

New Bern is a city in Craven County, North Carolina, United States. As of the 2010 census it had a population of 29,524, which had risen to an estimated 30,242 as of 2013. It is the county seat of Craven County and the principal city of the New Bern Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Craven County is a county located in the U.S. state of North Carolina. As of the 2010 Census, the population was 103,505. Its county seat is New Bern. The county was created in 1705 as Archdale Precinct from the now-extinct Bath County. It was renamed Craven Precinct in 1712 and gained county status in 1739. It is named for William, Earl of Craven, who lived from 1606-1697.

Federal architecture architectural style

Federal-style architecture is the name for the classicizing architecture built in the newly founded United States between c. 1780 and 1830, and particularly from 1785 to 1815. This style shares its name with its era, the Federalist Era. The name Federal style is also used in association with furniture design in the United States of the same time period. The style broadly corresponds to the classicism of Biedermeier style in the German-speaking lands, Regency architecture in Britain and to the French Empire style.

It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973, with boundary expansions in 2003 and 2016. [1]

Masonic Temple and Theater United States historic place

The Masonic Temple, also known as St. John's Lodge No. 3, A.F. & A.M., is a historic Masonic temple and theatre located at 516 Hancock Street in New Bern, Craven County, North Carolina. It was built between 1802 and 1809, with additions and several alterations. The original section is a very tall, two-story Federal style brick structure, seven bays wide by four bays deep. It sits on a high basement and has a hipped roof. A major addition was made in 1904, and the building was remodeled in 1847 and in 1917. The site was the scene of a duel in 1802.

Christ Episcopal Church and Parish House is a historic Episcopal church located at 320 Pollock Street in New Bern, Craven County, North Carolina. It was built in 1871, incorporating the brick shell of the previous church built in 1824. It is a brick church building in a restrained Gothic Revival style. It features a three-stage entrance tower, with a pyramidal roof and octagonal spire. Beneath the tower is a Stick Style entrance porch added in 1884. The parish house was built between 1904 and 1908, and is a two-story, three bay by five bay, rectangular red brick building with a steep slate gable roof.

It was built in 1820, and is a rectangular frame church building with two tiers of windows. During the Civil War, the church was converted into a military hospital by the Union forces.

Pepsi Cola inventor Caleb Bradham owned the house from 1908 until 1934.

Central Elementary School (New Bern, North Carolina) United States historic place

Central Elementary School is a pair of historic school buildings in New Bern, Craven County, North Carolina. The First New Bern Academy is located on New Street and was built about 1806. It is a two-story, brick building with a hipped roof and two interior ridge chimneys. It features a semicircular tetrastyle entrance porch with Tuscan order columns and a roof cupola. It has a rear addition dated to the late-19th century. The Second New Bern Academy was built in 1884 to replace the previous building. The buildings retained their educational functions until 1971. The 1806 building now houses a museum, while the 1884 building has been converted into apartments.

New Bern City Hall United States historic place

City Hall, also known as the Municipal Building, is a historic municipal building in New Bern, Craven County, North Carolina. It was originally built in 1897 by the federal government to house a post office, federal courthouse, and custom house. It is a 3 1/2-story, brick and granite building with a 2 1/2-story wing in the Romanesque Revival style. The building has hipped roofs with dormers and features a bulky outsized square clock tower with a pyramidal roof. It became the municipal building in 1936.

It encompasses 86 contributing buildings and 1 contributing site in a residential section of New Bern developed between 1926 and 1956. The district is characterized by dwellings in the Colonial Revival and Tudor Revival styles. Located in the district is the site of DeGraffenried Park.

Craven Terrace United States historic place

Craven Terrace is a historic apartment complex located at New Bern, Craven County, North Carolina. The complex was built in two stages in 1942 and 1953, and consists of 46 apartment buildings, a one-story brick community building (1942). The buildings include elements of Colonial Revival and Moderne style design elements. The complex was built as a low-income residential development for African American residents of New Bern and was funded by the United States Housing Authority.
