The New York Burlesque Festival is an annual four-day event that takes place in New York City each fall, where performers from all over the world appear on stages for musical acts, burlesque shows, and other performances. [1]

History

The festival premiered in 2003 and was founded by Jen Gapay of Thirsty Girl Productions along with Angie Pontani, Tara Pontani and Helen Pontani of The World Famous Pontani Sisters. [2] Actress and burlesque artist Pearls Daily has been on the Production Team as Volunteer Coordinator since 2016, in addition to performing as part of the event.

Festival venues and performers

The festival features over 100 burlesque and variety performers from around the world, making it one of the largest international burlesque events. [3] Burlesque is attended by featured performers in addition to live music, comedy and variety.

Venues

The four nights of the festival take place at various venues throughout Manhattan and Brooklyn. In addition to live performances, all shows feature interactive elements where patrons get burlesque makeovers or purchase paraphernalia such as pasties, costumes and corsets. [4]

Venues for the festival include B.B. King Blues Club in Times Square, the Highline Ballroom, Brooklyn Bowl and The Bell House. Previous venues have included Le Poisson Rouge, The Maritime Hotel, The Limelight and the Supper Club. [5]

Francis "Faceboy" Hall is an American actor, producer, and activist working in the New York City arts community. Hall, the younger brother of poet and King Missile frontman, John S. Hall, is one of the founding members of the Art Stars. Hall has appeared in numerous stage productions and several films, including Robert Downey Sr.'s Too Much Sun and the television series 'Electra Elf'. In addition, Hall was a founding member of the Dance Liberation Front where he has worked to overturn New York City's "no dancing" cabaret laws. A poet and performer himself, Faceboy is best known as the host of the weekly Faceboyz Open Mic, which is now considered to be the longest continually running open mic in New York. He hosted 'Faceboyz Folliez', a monthly show that took place at the Bowery Poetry Club.

Jennie Worrell was a burlesque actress of the 19th century from Cincinnati, Ohio. She was the youngest of three Worrell sisters who appeared in Broadway productions from 1867 to 1872.

Glasslands Gallery was a music venue, dance club, and art space in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Glasslands was founded by Brooke Baxter and Rolyn Hu in 2006, as a relocation of Baxter's earlier art space in the same building, Glass House Gallery. Hu and Baxter held the lease on the Glasslands space until 2012 when they made a turn-key sale to Rami Haykal and Jake Rosenthal of PopGun presents, who had been managing bookings since 2009, and day-to-day operations since 2010. PopGun owned the business and lease for two years until the venue was displaced to be converted into Vice Media‘s office headquarters. As a concert venue, Glasslands was one of the longest-running of several 2000s independent creative venue spaces in the vicinity of the Williamsburg waterfront, which included 285 KENT, Death By Audio, Secret Project Robot, Monster Island Basement, B.P.M., Live With Animals Gallery, the Rock Star Bar, and many others.
