Nichols Snowfield

Nichols Snowfield ( 69°25′S71°5′W / 69.417°S 71.083°W / -69.417; -71.083 ) is a snowfield, 22 nautical miles (41 km) long and 8 nautical miles (15 km) wide, bounded by the Rouen Mountains and Elgar Uplands to the east and Lassus Mountains to the west, in the north part of Alexander Island, Antarctica. The snowfield was first sighted from the air and roughly mapped by the British Graham Land Expedition (BGLE) in 1937. Mapped in detail from air photos taken by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition (RARE), 1947–48, by Searle of the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS) in 1960. It is named by the RARE for Dr. Robert L. Nichols, head of the Department of Geology, Tufts University, and senior scientist of the Ronne expedition.

The LeMay Range is a mountain range 40 nautical miles (70 km) long with peaks rising to 2,000 metres (6,600 ft), extending in a northwest–southeast direction from Snick Pass to the north side of Uranus Glacier in the central portion of Alexander Island, Antarctica. It was first seen from the air by Lincoln Ellsworth on November 23, 1935, and the north and east portions mapped from photos obtained on that flight by W.L.G. Joerg. Later, it was resighted from the air by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition (RARE), 1947–48, and named by Finn Ronne for General Curtis LeMay, Deputy Chief of Air Staff for Research and Development of the then United States Army Air Forces, which furnished equipment for the expedition. The range was remapped in detail from RARE photos by D. Searle of the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey in 1960.

Shaw Nunatak is a nunatak rising to 500 m in Nichols Snowfield, northern Alexander Island, Antarctica. It is situated 5.3 km north-northeast of Rachenitsa Nunatak, 4.23 km east-southeast of Tipits Knoll and 7 km southeast of Mount Kliment Ohridski in Sofia University Mountains, 7.5 km southwest of Lizard Nunatak and 8.1 km northwest of Tegra Nunatak. The feature was photographed from the air by Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition in 1947–48, and mapped from these photographs by D. Searle of Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey, 1960. The nunatak was named by United Kingdom Antarctic Place-Names Committee in 1977 after Colin Shaw (1944–78), British Antarctic Survey surveyor who worked in Alexander Island, from 1975 to 1976.

Sibelius Glacier is a glacier, 12 miles (19 km) long and 6 miles (10 km) wide, flowing south into the Mozart Ice Piedmont 10 miles (16 km) southwest of Mount Stephenson in the northern portion of Alexander Island, Antarctica. The glacier was first sighted from the air by the British Graham Land Expedition in 1937. Mapped from air photos taken by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition in 1947–48, by Searle of the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey in 1960. This feature was named by the United Kingdom Antarctic Place-Names Committee for Jean Sibelius (1865-1957), Finnish composer.

Gilbert Glacier is a glacier about 20 nautical miles (37 km) long flowing south from Nichols Snowfield into Mozart Ice Piedmont, situated in northern Alexander Island, Antarctica.

Wubbold Glacier is a steeply inclined glacier, 8 nautical miles (15 km) long, flowing south from the Havre Mountains, situated in the northern portion of Alexander Island, Antarctica. The glacier drains the north, west and southwest slopes of Mount Pontida, and flows into Lazarev Bay north of Mount Holt. It was photographed from the air by Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition in 1947 and was mapped from the photographs by Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey in 1960. Named by Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names for Commander J.H. Wubbold, USCG, commanding officer, USCGC Northwind, U.S. Navy Operation Deepfreeze, 1977.

Bartók Glacier is a glacier, 7 nautical miles (13 km) long and 3 nautical miles (6 km) wide, flowing southwest from the southern end of the Elgar Uplands in the northern part of Alexander Island. It was first photographed from the air and roughly mapped by the British Graham Land Expedition in 1937, and more accurately mapped from air photos taken by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition, 1947–48, by D. Searle of the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey in 1960. It was named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee after the Hungarian composer Béla Bartók.

Mount Borodin is a mainly ice-covered mountain, 695 metres (2,280 ft) high, with a rock outcrop on the east side, 7 nautical miles (13 km) north-northeast of Gluck Peak in the southwest part of Alexander Island, Antarctica. A number of peaks in this general vicinity first appear on the maps of the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition (RARE), 1947–48. This peak, apparently one of these, was mapped from RARE air photos by Derek J.H. Searle of the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey in 1960, and named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee after Alexander Borodin, the Russian composer.

Neptune Glacier is a glacier on the east coast of Alexander Island, Antarctica, 12 nautical miles (22 km) long and 4 nautical miles (7 km) wide, flowing east into George VI Sound and the George VI Ice Shelf to the south of Triton Point. Although Neptune Glacier is not located within the mountain range Planet Heights, the glaciers name derives from the mountain range along with many other nearby glaciers named after planets of the Solar System. There are also other nearby landforms named in association with these glaciers. The glacier was first sighted from the air by Lincoln Ellsworth on November 23, 1935, and roughly mapped from photos obtained on that flight by W.L.G. Joerg. The mouth of the glacier was positioned in 1936 by the British Graham Land Expedition (BGLE). Named by the United Kingdom Antarctic Place-Names Committee (UK-APC) for the planet Neptune following a Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS) survey in 1949. The head of the glacier was mapped from air photos taken by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition (RARE), 1947–48, by Searle of the FIDS in 1960.

Wade Ice Rise is a small ice rise in Wordie Ice Shelf, 8 nautical miles (15 km) northwest of Triune Peaks, Fallières Coast. Photographed from the air by Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition (RARE), 1947–48, and surveyed by Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS), 1958. Named in 1977 by Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names (US-ACAN) after George W. Wade, Jr., U.S. Navy, Chief Construction Electrician, Palmer Station, winter party 1970.

Wagner Ice Piedmont is an ice piedmont, 9 nautical miles (17 km) long in a NW-SE direction and 4 nautical miles (7 km) wide, overlying the southwest part of Rothschild Island.

Coulter Glacier is a steeply inclined glacier, 5 nautical miles (9 km) long, flowing south from the Havre Mountains, northern Alexander Island, into Kolokita Cove in Lazarev Bay, Antarctica. The glacier was photographed from the air by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition in 1947 and mapped from the photographs by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey in 1960. It was named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names for R.W. Coulter, Master of USNS Alatna during U.S. Navy Operation Deepfreeze, 1969.

Delius Glacier is a glacier, 6 nautical miles (11 km) long and 2 nautical miles (4 km) wide, flowing west from the Elgar Uplands into Nichols Snowfield, in the northern part of Alexander Island, Antarctica. It was first seen from the air and roughly mapped by the British Graham Land Expedition in 1937. It was more accurately mapped from air photos taken by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition, 1947–48, by D. Searle of the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey in 1960, and from U.S. Landsat imagery of February 1975. It was named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee after Frederick Delius, the British composer.

Tufts Pass is a pass extending in an east–west direction between the Rouen Mountains and the Elgar Uplands in the north part of Alexander Island, Antarctica. The mountain pass was probably first sighted from the air and roughly mapped by the British Graham Land Expedition in 1937. Remapped from air photos taken by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition in 1947–48, by Searle of the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey in 1960. Named by the RARE for Tufts University, Medford, Massachusetts, United States, where Dr. Robert Nichols was head of the geology department before joining the RARE.

Purcell Snowfield is a snowfield, 15 nautical miles (28 km) wide, lying between the east portion of the Colbert Mountains and the west side of the Douglas Range in the central part of Alexander Island, Antarctica. The feature was mapped from air photos taken by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition (RARE), 1947–48, by Searle of the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS) in 1960. The snowfield was named by the United Kingdom Antarctic Place-Names Committee (UK-APC) for Henry Purcell (1659–1695), English composer.

Palestrina Glacier is a glacier lying in the northern portion of Alexander Island, Antarctica, 11 nautical miles (20 km) long and 8 nautical miles (15 km) wide, flowing west from Nichols Snowfield into Lazarev Bay. The glacier was mapped from air photos taken by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition (RARE), 1947–48, by Derek J.H. Searle of the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS) in 1960. Named by the United Kingdom Antarctic Place-Names Committee (UK-APC) for Giovanni da Palestrina (1525–1594), Italian composer.

The Havre Mountains are a large group of mountains forming the northwestern extremity of Alexander Island, Antarctica, extending 20 nautical miles (37 km) in an east–west direction between Cape Vostok and the Russian Gap. They were first seen in 1821 by a Russian expedition under Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen and re-sighted by the Belgian Antarctic Expedition, 1897–99. They were roughly charted by the French Antarctic Expedition, 1908–10, under Jean-Baptiste Charcot, who named them for Le Havre, the French port from which the Pourquol Pas? sailed in 1908. The mountains were mapped in detail from air photos taken by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition, 1947–48, by D. Searle of the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey in 1960.

Titania Peak is a rock peak, rising to about 1,250 metres (4100'), lying near the head of Uranus Glacier, 11 nautical miles (20 km) west-northwest of Mount Umbriel, situated in the central portion of Alexander Island, Antarctica. First mapped from air photos taken by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition in 1947–48, by Searle of the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey in 1960. This feature was named by the United Kingdom Antarctic Place-Names Committee from association with nearby Uranus Glacier, Titania being one of the satellites of the planet Uranus, the seventh planet of the Solar System.it was first climbed in 1970 by Tony Bushell, Ian Sykes and Rod Pashley.

The Lassus Mountains are a large group of mountains, 15 nautical miles (28 km) long and 3 nautical miles (6 km) wide, rising to 2,100 metres (6,900 ft) and extending south from Palestrina Glacier in the northwest part of Alexander Island, Antarctica. They overlook Lazarev Bay and a few minor islands within the bay such as Dint Island and Umber Island; Haydn Inlet lies to the south while the Havre Mountains lie immediately north.

Mount Alfred is an ice-capped mountain, more than 2,000 m, 5.5 nautical miles (10 km) inland from George VI Sound and 8 nautical miles (15 km) south of Mount Athelstan in the Douglas Range of Alexander Island, Antarctica. It was first photographed from the air on November 23, 1935, by Lincoln Ellsworth and mapped from these photos by W.L.G. Joerg. Its east face was roughly surveyed in 1936 by the British Graham Land Expedition (BGLE) and resurveyed in 1948 and 1949 by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS), who named it for Alfred, Saxon king of England, 871–899. The west face of the mountain was mapped from air photos taken by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition (RARE), 1947–48, by Searle of the FIDS in 1960.
