Nick A. Khouri (born c. 1957) is an American economic advisor who served as the 46th Treasurer of Michigan from 2015 to 2018, during the administration of Governor Rick Snyder.

Early life and education

Khouri was born around 1957 in Burton, Michigan, where he was also raised. [1] He graduated from Kearsley High School in Genesee Township, Michigan in 1975. [2] Khouri earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics from the University of Michigan and a Master of Arts in the same subject from Michigan State University. [3] [4]

Career

Khouri previously served as chief economist to the Michigan Senate Fiscal Agency. Khouri served as chief deputy Michigan State Treasurer under Douglas B. Roberts from 1991 to 1997. [3] [4]

Khouri served as Michigan State Treasurer after being appointed by Governor Rick Snyder. He served in this position from April 20, 2015 until his resignation in 2018. [3] [5] On December 13, 2019, Detroit mayor Mike Duggan appointed Khouri as the city's economic development chief. Khouri assumed this position on January 1, 2020. [1] Khouri retired as Detroit's economic development chief in December 2020, and was replaced by Nicole Sherard-Freeman. [6]

The Michigan gubernatorial election of 2010 was held on November 2, 2010. Incumbent Democratic Governor Jennifer Granholm was prohibited by the state's Constitution from seeking a third term. This resulted in a large pool of candidates which was whittled down, when the May 11 filing deadline passed, to two Democrats and five Republicans. Both the Cook Political Report and the non-partisan Rothenberg Political Report rated the election as leaning Republican.

Pure Michigan

Pure Michigan began as an advertising campaign launched in 2008 by the state of Michigan, featuring the voice of actor and comedian Tim Allen, using the title song from The Cider House Rules as the background music in television commercials. The Pure Michigan campaign, which aims to market the state of Michigan as a travel and tourism destination, received state and international attention beginning in 2008 when Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm approved $45 million in additional funding for the Pure Michigan campaign from the 21st Century Jobs Trust Fund. The unprecedented tourism fund amount for the state allowed the Pure Michigan campaign to be broadcast on a national level beginning in March 2009. Annual funding for fiscal 2014 was $29 million.

Duggan won a second term in the 2017 election. Prior to becoming mayor he held a number of other political offices, including from 1987 to 2001 as deputy County Executive of Wayne County in which Detroit is located. He has received an approval rating of over 68%, the highest rating of any mayor of Detroit.

Thomas L. Leonard III is an American attorney and politician. He is a former member of the Michigan House of Representatives who served as Speaker of the House from 2017 to 2019. Elected in 2012 to succeed term-limited Paul Opsommer, Leonard represented the residents of Clinton and Gratiot County. Prior to that, he worked as a prosecutor. Leonard unsuccessfully ran for Michigan Attorney General in 2018 and was nominated by President Donald Trump to be the United States Attorney for the Western District of Michigan.
