George A. Steel (born June 19,1862) was a Michigan politician.
Steel was born on June 19,1862,in St. Johns,Michigan. There,Steel received a public school education. [1]
In July 1878,Steel went to Sauk Rapids,Minnesota,where he took the position of bookkeeper and paymaster for the bridge construction firm James McIntire &Company. Steel then moved to St. Paul,Minnesota,where he worked in the same position for the same firm. In 1879,Steel worked as a paymaster in Nevada during the construction of the Nevada Central Railroad. In 1880,Steel became general paymaster and purchasing agent for the Oregon Construction Company,where he aided in the construction of four hundred miles of railroad in the states of Oregon,Washington,and Idaho. Later,the duties were combined,and Steel had full control of the company's finances. [1]
In 1885,Steel returned to Michigan. He became vice president of the St. Johns National Bank that same year. From 1892 to 1893,Steel served as a member of the Michigan Republican State Central Committee. On November 8,1892,Steel was elected to the Michigan Senate where he represented the 19th district from January 4,1893,to December 31,1894. [2] In 1893,Steel organized the Ithaca Savings Bank,to which he became president. In January 1895,Steel formed a firm with F. A. Smith named Steel,Smith,and Company which bought and sold municipal bonds and commercial paper. Steel served two terms as Michigan State Treasurer from 1897 to 1900. [1] [3]
On January 28,1885,Steel married Cora Stout. Together,they had two children. [1]
The Central Pacific Railroad (CPRR) was a rail company chartered by U.S. Congress in 1862 to build a railroad eastwards from Sacramento,California,to complete most of the western part of the "First transcontinental railroad" in North America. Incorporated in 1861,CPRR ceased independent operations in 1875 when the railroad was leased to the Southern Pacific Railroad. Its assets were formally merged into Southern Pacific in 1959.

The Spokane,Portland &Seattle Railway was a railroad in the northwest United States. Incorporated in 1905,it was a joint venture by the Great Northern Railway and the Northern Pacific Railway to build a railroad along the north bank of the Columbia River. The railroad later built or acquired other routes in Oregon. The SP&S was merged into the Burlington Northern in March,1970. Remnants of the line are currently operated by BNSF Railway and the Portland and Western Railroad.

The Nevada County Narrow Gauge Railroad (NCNGRR) was located in Northern California's Nevada County and Placer County,where it connected with the Central Pacific Railroad. The Nevada County Narrow Gauge Railroad Company incorporated on April 4,1874,and was headquartered in Grass Valley,California. After two years of construction,passenger and commercial rail services began in 1876 and continued until 1943. The 22.53 mi (36.26 km) line ran from Colfax,north through Grass Valley to Nevada City. At one time,the railroad was notable for having the highest railroad bridge in California,the Bear River Bridge,built in 1908.

Charles Amos Cogswell was an American politician and attorney from the state of Oregon. He served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Cogswell was elected to two four-year terms in the Oregon State Senate. During his tenure in the legislature,he was known as a conservative Democrat;however,near the end of his second term in the senate,he became a Republican. After retiring from his law practice,Cogswell moved to Portland,Oregon,where he was active in business and engaged in public service.
William Crooks was a Colonel during the American Civil War,member of the Minnesota House of Representatives,U.S. Military Academy graduate,and a veteran railroader. He led the 6th Regiment Minnesota Volunteer Infantry from August 1862 to October 1864,mainly contending against the Sioux. Crooks built the first rail line in the State of Minnesota,the St. Paul &Pacific. His first locomotive he named for himself the William Crooks 4-4-0 and began its operation in 1861. His operation was taken over by James J. Hill. The William Crooks would become the first locomotive of Hill's Great Northern Railroad.
