Nick Myers is an American politician who serves on the Arizona Corporation Commission, first being elected in the 2022 election. Prior to serving in the commission,Myers worked as a software engineer for Intel and various satellite communication companies, before starting his own small businesses.
Myers was born in Kansas, and graduated from the University of Kansas. After graduating,he worked as a software engineer for Intel,as well as several other satellite communications companies, for about 18 years. [1] Following this,he started his own small businesses which ranged from running a train service for children's birthday parties to hauling water to rural residents,as well as dog boarding. [1]
Myers began his political career as a policy advisor to Justin Olson, whom he would later succeed as a member of the Arizona Corporation Commission. [1] Myers ran for the Arizona House of Representatives in 2018,but placed in a distant fourth in Republican primary, losing to Warren Petersen and Travis Grantham, and another candidate. [2]
In 2016,Myers filed a complaint with the Arizona Corporation Commission, after his water-hauling business had been cut off by Johnson Utilities,a water utility company in the Phoenix area. The complaint eventually led to the restoration of Myers's services. [3]
In 2022,Myers ran again for public office, alongside Kevin Thompson as the Republican slate for the two open seats on the Arizona Corporation Commission. [1] Along with Thompson,he defeated incumbent Commissioner Sandra Kennedy in the general election,as well as Lauren Kuby, both of whom ran as Democrats. [4] During his time as commissioner,Myers has opposed clean energy mandates, [5] and solar subsidies, stating that the solar industry "should stand on its own two feet." [6]
Myers lives with his wife and three children in Pinal County,Arizona. [7]
The Louisiana Public Service Commission (LPSC) is an independent regulatory agency which manages public utilities and motor carriers in Louisiana. The Commission was created by Article IV,Section 21 of the 1921 Constitution of the State of Louisiana. It succeeded the Railroad Commission of Louisiana that was created by the 1898 Constitution. The commission has five elected members chosen in single-member districts for staggered six-year terms. Thus the commissioners have large constituencies, long terms, and close involvement with issues of intense consumer interest ; consequently membership in LPSC has been known to serve as a springboard to even higher public office,as in the cases of Huey Long,Jimmie Davis,John McKeithen, and Kathleen Babineaux Blanco —LPSC members who became governors of Louisiana.
The Solana Generating Station is a solar power plant near Gila Bend,Arizona, about 70 miles (110 km) southwest of Phoenix. It was completed in 2013. When commissioned,it was the largest parabolic trough plant in the world, and the first U.S. solar plant with molten salt thermal energy storage. Built by the Spanish company Abengoa Solar, the project can produce up to 280 megawatts (MW) gross, supplied by two 140 MW gross (125 MW net) steam turbine generators:enough electricity to meet the needs of approximately 70,000 homes and obviate the emission of roughly 475,000 tons of CO2 every year. Its name is the Spanish term for "sunny spot".
The Arizona Corporation Commission is the Public Utilities Commission of the State of Arizona, established by Article 15 of the Arizona Constitution. Arizona is one of only fourteen states with elected commissioners. The Arizona Constitution explicitly calls for an elected commission,as opposed to a governor-appointed commission, which is the standard in most states, because its drafters feared that governors would appoint industry-friendly officials. They are directly elected statewide and serve staggered four-year terms. Due to its separation from the executive branch, the commission is often referred to as the "fourth branch of government." The characterization of the Commission as the "fourth branch of government" is contradicted, however,by Article III of the Arizona Constitution, which provides that "[t]he powers of the government of the state of Arizona shall be divided into three separate departments, the legislative, the executive, and the judicial".
