Niebla isidiosa is a fruticose lichen known only from Guadalupe Island. [1] The epithet, isidiosa is in reference to isidia (isidium) on the thallus.
Niebla isidiosa is characterized by a rigid thallus divided into irregularly widened branches, to 5 cm long and 5 cm across, by its development of dense isidia along the reticulate ridges of the cortex, by containing divaricatic acid, and by the absence of pycnidia. [1] The irregular widened branches are similar to Niebla caespitosa , which not only lacks isidia, but also has a thinner cortex, 45–75 μm thick, in contrast to 100–150 μm thick in N. isidiosa. The thicker cortex of N. isidiosa—along with its reticulate ridging—is much like that of Niebla testudinaria, 100–150 μm thick; it also lacks isidia. [1] Another similar species, Niebla sorediata, which has a relatively thin cortex, 30–40 μm thick, differs by the granular appearance of the isidia that become sorediate (soredium). [1] Niebla isidiosa was probably derived from N. testudinaria, which also occurs on Guadalupe Island. [1]
Niebla isidiosa was collected by Edward Palmer on Guadalupe Island during Feb to May 1875. [1] [2]
R. Heber Howe, Jr., in a taxonomic revision of the genus Ramalina , in 1913. noted that a manuscript name—R. homalea f. isidiosa by Henry Willey on the specimen collected by Palmer—that it represented a "contingent phase of R. homalea." [3] The epithet was adopted by Richard Spjut who also designated the Palmer specimen as holotype (biology) for a new species in his revision of the genus Niebla. [1]
Another isidiate species, Niebla isidiaescens, described by Peter Bowler and collaborators in 1994, [4] based on a type specimen from the southern state of Baja California, differs by the flagelliform (flagellum)branches with a cortex 45–75 μm thick, generally becoming thinner towards apex as in N. flagelliforma. [1] This had been recognized for some time by Spjut under an unpublished name for specimens he collected in southern Baja California that he deposited with annotations at the United States National Herbarium (Smithsonian Institution) in 1986. Bowler and Janet Marsh in 2004 treated N. isidiosa as a synonym of their N. isdiaescens. Another isidiate species was considered a synonym of the non-isidiate N. homalea. [5] No explanation was provided for the discordant taxonomy, while other inconsistencies have been reported. [6]
Niebla is a genus of yellow-green fruticose lichens that grow on rocks, trees, and shrubs within the fog zone of coastal North America, or more narrowly defined to occur on rocks and soil along the Pacific Coast from Mendocino County in California south to Baja California Sur.
Niebla homalea is a species of fruticose lichen that grows on rocks in foggy areas along the Pacific Coast of North America, from Mendocino County, California south to Bahía de San Quintín on the main peninsula of Baja California, with an isolated occurrence further south on vertical rock faces above Punta Camachos, and other occurrences in the Channel Islands and on Guadalupe Island. The epithet homalea, given by Acharius, suggests it was in regard to the branches appearing flattened.
Vermilacinia acicularis is a fruticose lichen that occurs in the Channel Islands of California. The type specimen was collected from San Clemente Island. Other specimens have been collected from Santa Barbara Island and Anacapa Island.
Vermilacinia procera is a fruticose lichen of local occurrences on rocks near the sea along the Pacific Coast from San Francisco California to the Channel Islands, and to Punta Escarpada in Baja California. The species is also reported to occur further south to the Vizcaíno Peninsula and on Cedros Island, but these reports are controversial in view of different interpretations of the species that include V. pumila and V. paleoderma that were not recognized at the time V. procera was described ; for example, a specimen collected on Guadalupe Island by Weber and MCoy (L-3605, COLO that was cited by Phillip Rundel and Peter Bowler in 1994 as belonging to Niebla procera, whereas in a revision of the genus by Richard Spjut in 1996, it was cited as belonging to Vermilacinia paleoderma. Both authorities generally agree to some extent on the description of the species and its geographical range within the California Floristic Province.
Vermilacinia tigrina is a fruticose lichen that grows on branches of shrubs and on earth among cactus and shrubs in the fog regions along the Pacific Coast of North America and South America; in North America found in the Channel Islands and near San Diego, California, and in central and southern Baja California; in South America from Peru to Chile. The epithet is in reference to the irregular black spots or bands on the thallus branches.

The epithet, infundibula, is in reference to the funnel shape of the thallus branches.
