The Nigerian Institute of Quantity Surveyors (NIQS) is the professional umbrella body for quantity surveyors in Nigeria. [1] It is one of the two major bodies associated with the profession in the country. The other is Quantity Surveyors Registration Board of Nigeria (QSRBN), which is the regulatory body of the quantity surveying profession and practice in Nigeria. It was established by Decree No. 31 of December 5, 1986, now CAP Q1 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria (LFN) 2004. [2]

History

The Quantity Surveying profession in Nigeria exist under a body which is "The Nigeria Institute of Quantity Surveyors" which was founded in 1969. A group of Nigerians, trained in the UK, came back to the country and created a parallel body to the Royal institute of Chartered Surveyors of the United Kingdom.

In the United States of America, quantity surveyors are known as 'Cost Engineers.' The profession over the years has played some roles in the development of the countries infrastructure by advising government to be accountable [3] the professional body has as her first President; Chief G.A Balogun, PPNIQS, FNIQS, FRICS (1969-1973) [4] and very recently, NIQS has a first female President; Mrs. Mercy Torkwase Iyortyer, FNIQS, MAPS (2015- 2017)

The Nigerian Institute of Quantity Surveyors hold workshops across Nigeria annually. Previous events such as workshops, QS Job Fairs, End of The Year Dinner etc were held in Osun State, Gombe, Uyo, March, Kaduna, Makurdy, Abuja, Lagos etc. Other events are Biennial Conference/Election General Meetings and Annual General Meetings. Barewa College is a college in Zaria, Kaduna State, northern Nigeria. Founded in 1921 by British Governor General Hugh Clifford, it was originally known as Katsina College. It switched its name to Kaduna College in 1938 and to Government College, Zaria in 1949 before settling on Barewa College. It is one of the largest boarding schools in Northern Nigeria and was the most-celebrated post-primary schools there up to the early 1960s. The school is known for the large number of elites from the region who attended and counts among its alumni include Tafawa Balewa who was Prime Minister of Nigeria from 1960 to 1966, four heads of state of Nigeria. The school is located along Gaskiya road in the Tukur -Tukur area of Zaria.

Kaduna Book and Arts Festival, also known as KABAFEST, is an annual literary, cultural, and art event in Kaduna State, Nigeria that took place for the first time in July, 2017. It was organized by Book Buzz Foundation, who also organizes the annual Aké Arts and Book Festival, in collaboration with the Kaduna State Government and the Gusau Institute. It was also the first book festival that occurs annually in northern Nigeria.

Muhammad Sani Abdullahi popularly known as Dattijo is a Deputy Governor of Economic Policy at the Central Bank of Nigeria. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu appointed Muhammad as Deputy Governor on 15 September 2023, and his appointment was confirmed by the Nigerian Senate on 23 September, 2023. Dattijo served as a policy adviser at the Executive Office of United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki Moon in New York. Dattijo formed the core team that developed the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Dattijo resigned from this appointment to serve the Nigerian government as the Commissioner for Budget and Planning in Kaduna State. He published a book titled "Disruption Rethinking Governance to work for the Poor." On 2 July 2023.

Obafemi Oluwole Onashile is a Nigerian quantity surveyor, the founding partner of Nigeria's largest quantity surveying firm Consol Associates located in Nigeria, Ghana and Rwanda. He is the past President of the Nigerian Institute of Quantity Surveyors (NIQS). He is the President of the African Institute of Quantity Surveyors.

Suleiman Abdu Kwari is a Nigerian politician and public finance management expert, senator for the Kaduna North Senatorial District of Kaduna State Nigeria. He was elected during the February 2019 Nigeria general elections under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC). He was the commissioner of Finance Kaduna State (2015-2019) appointed by the Governor of Kaduna State Nasir Ahmad el-Rufai and was also a member of the House of Representatives for Sabon Gari Local Government cConstituency of Kaduna State.

The Nigerian Institution of Estate Surveyors and Valuers (NIESV) was founded in 1969 by the few qualified General Practice Chartered Surveyors who were mostly trained in the United Kingdom. The Institution was recognized by the Federal government of Nigeria by the enactment of the Estate Surveyors and Valuers ” Decree No. 24 of 1975.

Ibrahim Jalo WaziriCOS CFR was a teacher, administrator, traditional leader and politician from North Nigeria who was twice elected as the Speaker of the House of Representatives of Nigeria from 1960 to 1963 and 1963 until the 1966 Military coup in January.

The 2015 Kaduna State gubernatorial election occurred on April 11, 2015. Nasir el-Rufai of the APC took a clear lead against the incumbent governor and PDP, Mukhtar Ramalan Yero candidate in the election. The APC candidate won in 17 LGAs, while the PDP claimed the other six.

The 2019 Kaduna State gubernatorial election occurred on March 9, 2019. APC candidate Nasir Ahmad el-Rufai defeated main opposition party PDP's candidate, Isah Ashiru, to emerge winner of the contest. APC was said to have won 14 LGAs, PDP nine.
