Ningombam Bupenda Meitei (born 6 April 1987) is an Indian writer, essayist and poet in English and Meitei languages.

Early life

Ningombam Bupenda Meitei was born in Imphal, Manipur to the descendant of Maharaja Kullachandra of Manipur [1] [2] whose royal throne was recognised by the Viceroy of India, Lord Lansdowne. [3] He went to Sainik School Imphal and St. Stephen's College, Delhi, University of Delhi. [4]

Career

He taught philosophy at Hindu College, University of Delhi. He also taught physics and mathematics in Dehradun as a school teacher. He has composed many poems [5] besides writing in philosophy [6] [7] [8] [9] and philosophy of physics. [10] He is a member of International Network in Biolinguistics in which Prof. Noam Chomsky is also a member. [4]

Works

The Nehruvian

He founded [12] The Nehruvian on the birth anniversary of Indira Gandhi, 19 November 2015, in Imphal, Manipur. The Nehruvian aims to spread the philosophy of Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of an independent India.

Political career

He joined Indian National Congress [13] as chairperson, Social Media and Spokesperson of the party in Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee. Subsequently, Congress President Rahul Gandhi appointed [14] him as Regional Coordinator and asked [15] him to look after the affairs of All India Fishermen Congress under All India Congress Committee in the eight states of North Eastern region of India. Presently, he is the party's spokesperson and media panellist in Manipur.

Manipur is a state in northeast India, with the city of Imphal as its capital. It is bounded by the Indian states of Nagaland to the north, Mizoram to the south and Assam to the west. Meitei, also known as Manipuri, is a Tibeto-Burman language of northeast India. It is the official language and the lingua franca of Manipur and one of the official languages India. Meitei is the most widely-spoken Tibeto-Burman language of India and third the most used language of northeast India after Assamese and Bengali. There are 1.76 million Meitei native speakers in India according to the 2011 census. Most of these, or 1.52 million, are found in the state of Manipur, where they represent majority of its population. There are smaller communities in neighbouring Indian states, such as Assam (168,000), Tripura (24,000), Nagaland (9,500), and elsewhere in the country (37,500). The language is also spoken by smaller groups in neighbouring Myanmar and Bangladesh.

Nongthombam Biren Singh is an Indian politician, former footballer and journalist who is currently serving as the 12th Chief Minister of Manipur since 2017 representing Heingang Assembly constituency in the Manipur Legislative Assembly since 2002 as a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party. Besides being the chairman of Shri Shri Govindaji Temple Board, he is the first incumbent Chief Minister who serves as the president of the Lainingthou Sanamahi Temple Board (LSTB), the temple development board of Lainingthou Sanamahi of the Sanamahi religion since 2021.

Elam Endira Devi, is an Indian classical dancer and teacher, known for her expertise and scholarship in the classical dance form of Manipuri, especially in the genres of Lai Haraoba and Raas. The Government of India honored her, in 2014, with the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award, for her services to the field of art and culture.

Waikhom Gojen Meitei is an Indian poet and educationist from Manipur. The Government of India honored him in 2014 by bestowing upon him the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award, for his services to the fields of education and literature.

Elangbam Nilakanta Singh (1927-2000) was an Indian poet and critic, considered by many as one of the pioneers of modern Meitei literature. A recipient of the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1987, Nilakanta Singh was honored by the Government of India, in 2000, with the fourth highest Indian civilian award of Padma Shri.

Rajkumar Jhalajit Singh was an Indian writer, historian, Gandhian and academic. He was known for his book, "A Short History of Manipur", which was banned from publishing or selling by his own family members, because the book misleads the readers that the Manipuris are the descendants of Arjuna of the Mahabharata.

The Cinema of Manipur is the film industry based in Manipur, India. It includes not only Meitei language movies but all the films made in different languages of the different communities in Manipur. The Manipuri film industry was born when Matamgi Manipur by Debkumar Bose was released on 9 April 1972. From Aribam Syam Sharma's Paokhum Ama, the first colour Manipuri film (1983), M.A Singh's Langlen Thadoi, the first full-length colour Manipuri film (1984), Oken Amakcham's Lammei, the first Manipuri digital film (2002), to Priyakanta Laishram's Oneness (film), the first Manipuri gay-themed film (2023), Manipuri cinema, which celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2022, has grown in both its form and culture.

Rajkumar Jaichandra Singh, also known as R. K. Jaichandra Singh was the 7th chief minister of NorthEastern Indian state of Manipur from 1988 to 1990. He was a close aide of the former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and a prominent leader for the state-unit of Indian National Congress (INC) from Sagolband Assembly Constituency in Manipur. He is the first Union Minister from Manipur having served in the Cabinet of Rajiv Gandhi between 1985 and 1988 as the Union Minister for Sports and Youth affairs, and later on as the Chemicals and Petrochemicals Minister. He was also closely associated with former Indian prime minister Indira Gandhi during the emergency period of Trikha Commission in Manipur.

Romi Meitei is an Indian film director and lyricist who works in Manipuri films. He is a recipient of several awards at several film festivals organised in India and abroad and has directed movies for around two decades. Thoiba Thoibi, Inga Nonglakta, Manithoiba, Natephamda Tero, Chumthang Makhong, Mikithi and Dharmagi Mingda Imagidamak are some of the well-known movies he directed.

<i>Khurai Angaobi</i> 2019 Indian film

Khurai Angaobi is a 2019 Indian Meitei language film written and directed by Sudhir Kangjam. It is produced by Jugeshori Sairem under the banner of Sairem Art Creation. The film stars Soma Laishram, Gokul Athokpam, Biju Ningombam and Hamom Sadananda in the lead roles. The movie was premiered at Bhagyachandra Open Air Theatre (BOAT) on 5 October 2019.

The ancient legend of Khamba and Thoibi is a classic, as well as one of the epic cycles of incarnations of Meitei mythology and folklore, that is originated from Ancient Moirang kingdom of Ancient Kangleipak . It is referred to as the "National Romantic Legend of Manipur" by Padma Vibhushan awardee Indian scholar Suniti Kumar Chatterjee.

On 3 May 2023, ethnic violence erupted in India's north-eastern state of Manipur between the Meitei people, a majority that lives in the Imphal Valley, and the Kuki-Zo tribal community from the surrounding hills. According to government figures, as of 15 September, 175 people have been killed in the violence. 1,108 others were injured while 32 are missing. 4,786 houses were burnt and 386 religious structures including temples and churches were vandalized. The violence left more than 70,000 people displaced from their homes. Unofficial figures are higher.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Arambai Tenggol</span> Meitei-based organisation

Arambai Tenggol is a Meitei activist organisation in the Indian state of Manipur, often described as a radical organisation, or as a radicalised armed militia. It is also a revivalist organisation that aims to reestablish the pre-Hindu, native Sanamahi religion among the Meiteis. It enjoys the patronage of Manipur's titular king and parliamentarian Leishemba Sanajaoba as well as the chief minister N. Biren Singh. During the 2023–2024 Manipur violence, members of the Kuki-Zo community blamed it for having carried out deadly attacks against them. In January 2024, the organisation demonstrated its influence by summoning all the elected Meitei legislators of the state for a meeting to deliberate on the defence of Meiteis in the prevailing conflict.
