Noah Dobson (born January 7, 2000) is a Canadian professional ice hockey defenseman for the New York Islanders of the National Hockey League (NHL). He was selected 12th overall by the Islanders in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft.
Dobson grew up playing hockey on Prince Edward Island (PEI), first skating when he was four-years-old. A skilled skater, he was given permission by Hockey PEI (the governing body of hockey on PEI) to enroll in organized hockey at a younger age than normal, and consistently played in older age groups. In 2014 Dobson left home to attend Bishop's College School in Lennoxville, Quebec, recruited to join their hockey team. He spent the 2014–15 season at the school, and considered moving to Toronto and joining the Don Mills Flyers of the Greater Toronto Hockey League, though ultimately was recruited join the academy of EC Red Bull Salzburg in Austria. He spent a season in Austria, living with former NHL player Brian Savage (whose son also joined Red Bull), before returning to Canada. [1]
Dobson was drafted in the first round, sixth overall, in the 2016 QMJHL draft by the Acadie–Bathurst Titan. [2] Considered one of the top defensemen in the league, Dobson was named to the 2017–18 QMJHL first All-Star team. [3] He was also named the QMJHL defenseman of the month for the month of March after he finished the regular season tied for second place among defenseman in the league with 69 points. [4] At the conclusion of the season, Dobson was nominated for the Emile Bouchard Trophy as the league's best defensemen. He was also nominated for the Michael Bossy Trophy and Kevin Lowe Trophy. [5]
On June 22, 2018, Dobson was selected 12th overall by the New York Islanders in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft. [6] On August 13, the Islanders signed Dobson to a three-year, entry-level contract. [7]
In the 2018–19 season, Dobson was selected as the Titans team captain. [8] Having scored 16 points in 28 games for the rebuilding Titans, Dobson was traded to the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies during the 2019 World Junior Championships. [9] With the Huskies, Dobson won his second consecutive Memorial Cup.
On October 2, 2019, Dobson officially made the Islanders roster for the 2019–20 NHL season. Dobson's first NHL game came on October 8, 2019, against the Edmonton Oilers, where he recorded his first NHL point with a primary assist on a goal by Matt Martin. [10] On January 14, 2020, in his 18th NHL game, Dobson scored his first NHL goal against Calvin Pickard of the Detroit Red Wings. [11]
During the 2021–22 season, Dobson recorded 51 points with 13 goals in 80 games played. [12] On August 22, 2022, Dobson re-signed with the Islanders on a three-year deal. [13]
During the 2023–24 season, on April 9, 2024, Dobson became the second defenseman in Islanders history to record at least 60 assists in single season. [14] He ended the season with 70 points, becoming the first Islanders defenseman to reach the mark since Denis Potvin in the 1983-84 season. [15]

Dobson won a gold medal at the 2017 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament.
Dobson represented Canada at the 2019 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships in Vancouver and Victoria. He scored one goal in the tournament, but his most notable involvement came in the quarterfinal against Finland, when his stick broke on a one-timer, and the Finns immediately rushed down the ice and scored, eliminating Canada. [16]
Dobson was born in Summerside, Prince Edward Island to Bathurst, New Brunswick natives Andrew and Jenny Dobson. [17] He has one younger sister, Elly. [18]
Dobson lived with former Islander Dennis Seidenberg during his rookie season, similar to teammate Mathew Barzal. [19]
Dobson is engaged to Alexa Serowik.

Bryan Wallace Berard is an American former professional ice hockey defenseman. Berard was the first overall pick in the 1995 NHL Entry Draft by the Ottawa Senators. He is most noted for a debilitating eye injury he received early in his career. Berard underwent several operations, and played 619 games in his NHL career despite the seriousness of the injury.
Denis Charles Potvin is a Canadian former professional ice hockey defenceman and team captain for the New York Islanders of the National Hockey League (NHL). He is a four-time Stanley Cup winner as a member of the early 1980s New York Islanders. Potvin is also a three-time James Norris Memorial Trophy winner as the NHL's top defenceman. He was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1991 and served as a commentator for Ottawa Senators' television broadcasts on Sportsnet. Potvin is the former color commentator for the Florida Panthers. In 2017, he was named one of the "100 Greatest NHL Players" in history.
Gordon Rick Dwyer is a Canadian former professional ice hockey left winger who played five seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL) for the Tampa Bay Lightning, New York Rangers and Montreal Canadiens. He currently serves as the head coach and general manager of the Acadie–Bathurst Titan for the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL).
The Halifax Mooseheads are a Canadian junior ice hockey team in the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) based in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The team was founded in 1994 and began play in the Dilio Division of the QMJHL for the 1994–95 season. They have appeared in the President's Cup Finals five times, winning in 2013. The other four appearances were in 2003, 2005, 2019 and 2023. They hosted the Memorial Cup in 2000 and 2019 and won the tournament in 2013. The team plays their home games at the Scotiabank Centre.

His younger brother Yannic played for EHC Red Bull München in the DEL.

The 1991 Memorial Cup occurred May 11–19 at the Colisée de Québec in Quebec City, Quebec. It was the 73rd annual Memorial Cup competition and determined the major junior ice hockey champion of the Canadian Hockey League (CHL). Participating teams were the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League champion Chicoutimi Saguenéens and runner-up Drummondville Voltigeurs, as well as the winners of the Ontario Hockey League and Western Hockey League which were the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds and Spokane Chiefs. The original host team, the Beauport Harfangs, dropped out after finishing 26-40-4 in the 1990–91 QMJHL season and failing to qualify for the playoffs. Spokane, led by the high-scoring duo of Pat Falloon and Ray Whitney, dominated the tournament and won their first Memorial Cup, defeating Drummondville 5-1 in the final game. The Chiefs became the second American team to win the Memorial Cup.
Louis Philippe Mathieu Carle is a Canadian former professional ice hockey defenceman. He was selected in the second round, 53rd overall, by the Montreal Canadiens in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft.
Terrence James Brennan is an American professional ice hockey defenseman who is currently playing for HC Ajoie of the National League (NL). Brennan was originally selected by the Buffalo Sabres in the second round, 31st overall, of the 2007 NHL Entry Draft, and has also previously played for the Florida Panthers and Toronto Maple Leafs at the NHL level. Brennan has been cited as an elite offensive AHL defenseman, scoring at a pace of nearly a point-per-game, a rare feat for a defender.
Jake William Gardiner is an American former professional ice hockey defenseman. He played for the Toronto Maple Leafs and Carolina Hurricanes of the National Hockey League (NHL). He was drafted 17th overall by the Anaheim Ducks in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft.
Thomas Chabot is a Canadian professional ice hockey defenceman and alternate captain for the Ottawa Senators of the National Hockey League (NHL). Chabot was drafted in the first round by the Senators in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft.
Daniel Sprong is a Dutch-Canadian professional ice hockey right winger for the Coachella Valley Firebirds of the American Hockey League (AHL) while under contract to the Seattle Kraken of the National Hockey League (NHL). Sprong was originally selected by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the second round of the 2015 NHL entry draft after playing two seasons with the Charlottetown Islanders of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL), and made the Penguins immediately after being drafted, though he would return to the QMJHL and play two more seasons with the Islanders. He played parts of four seasons with Pittsburgh and their American Hockey League affiliate before being traded to the Anaheim Ducks in 2018, where he spent two seasons before being traded to the Washington Capitals in 2020. After his initial stint with the Kraken, he had tenures with the Detroit Red Wings and Vancouver Canucks before returning to Seattle.
Noah Juulsen is a Canadian ice hockey defenceman for the Vancouver Canucks of the National Hockey League (NHL). He was selected in the first round, 26th overall, by the Montreal Canadiens in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft. Juulsen has also previously played for the Florida Panthers.
Anthony-John Greer is a Canadian professional ice hockey forward for the Florida Panthers of the National Hockey League (NHL). He was selected in the second round, 39th overall, by the Colorado Avalanche in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft.
Samuel Girard is a Canadian professional ice hockey defenceman for the Colorado Avalanche in the National Hockey League (NHL). After playing major junior hockey with the Shawinigan Cataractes, Girard was drafted 47th overall by the Nashville Predators in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft. He briefly played for the Predators until he was traded to the Avalanche in 2017. Girard won the Stanley Cup with the Avalanche in 2022.

Jérémy Lauzon is a Canadian professional ice hockey defenceman for the Nashville Predators of the National Hockey League (NHL). Lauzon was drafted by the Boston Bruins in the second round in the 2015 NHL entry draft. He also spent time playing for the Seattle Kraken during their inaugural season. Lauzon currently holds the NHL record for most hits in a season.
Adam Fox is an American professional ice hockey defenseman and alternate captain for the New York Rangers of the National Hockey League (NHL). Fox was selected by the Calgary Flames, 66th overall, in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft. In 2021, Fox won the James Norris Memorial Trophy as the NHL's best defenseman, joining Bobby Orr as the only two players in NHL history to win the award before their third NHL season.
