As a member of the People's Party for Freedom and Democracy she was an MP from 1999 to 2002 and from 3 June 2003 to 19 September 2012. She focused on matters of agriculture, food safety, biotechnology, infrastructure and natural environment. From 14 November 2013 to 1 January 2018 she was acting mayor of Bellingwedde, and acting mayor of Oldebroek from 9 July 2018 to 3 October 2019.
