Nor 6 was a prawn trawler that sank on 25 April 1963 [1] after a collision with the Zuytdorp Cliffs off the coast of Western Australia.
The crew of the ship, on her maiden voyage, [1] consisted of skipper Jack Drinan as well as Ron Poole and Barry Allen, both from Brisbane, and Tony Romasanta, of South Fremantle. [2]
At the time of sinking, 5 am, three of the four crew members, including the skipper, were asleep, with Poole at the helm of the vessel. [3]
After a five day search, the wreck of the trawler was found 12 miles (19 km) south of False Entrance Point by an aircraft of the Nor-West Whaling company, without any sign of the crew. [4]
Drinan, however, survived the sinking of the trawler and was able to reach a floating ice box from the boat, breaking a hole into the box. Drinan claimed to have heard the other crew members shouting for him from the shore at the time of sinking. Drinan survived on 20 oranges, nine raw eggs and by licking water from the lid of the ice box for the next 14 days. With a shovel and hammer as his only tools, he cut the lid of the ice box in half to obtain a raft. An initial attempt to reach the shore on the small raft on the fourteenth day failed but he made another attempt the following day. Drinan reached the shore at the south passage lighthouse, not far from where Nor 6 sunk, but was unable to find any food or help. He returned to sea with his raft and was eventually spotted and rescued by the trawler Sonoma. [3] A land search for the missing men was briefly resumed in mid May after a report of sightings along the coast which turned out to be station hands. [5]
Drinan subsequently had his skipper's ticket suspended for 12 months by a maritime court in Fremantle in August 1963. In a three-day inquiry, Drinan was found to have failed in his duty in the management and navigation of the ship. The magistrate established that only one bearing had been taken during the ship's journey from Geraldton to the location of its sinking. [2] At the time, mapping of the area was incomplete and ships were still using the century-old survey maps of HMS Herald. [1] The ruling against Drinan faced some criticism; it was pointed out that the coast of Western Australia between Geraldton and the location of the sinking offered few landmarks to take bearings from, and the last ten hours of the journey were in darkness, with Drinan off duty and asleep. [6]
The raft Drinan used to reach land has been preserved in the collection of the Western Australian Museum. [7] The remains of the ice box are held by the Shire of Shark Bay, while a memorial stands along the top of the cliffs just south of Steep Point. [1] [8]

Numerous attempts were made to find the Australian cruiser HMAS Sydney and the German auxiliary cruiser Kormoran, which were both lost in a sea battle in 1941. Lady Elizabeth was a British ship built in 1869 by Robert Thompson Jr. of Sunderland. Robert Thompson Jr. was one of the sons of Robert Thompson Sr. who owned and operated the family ran shipyard J. L. Thompson & Sons. Thompson Jr. eventually left the family business in 1854 to start his own shipbuilding business in Southwick, Sunderland. She was 658 tons and was classified as a barque cargo sailing ship with one deck and three masts. She had a keel and outer planking made from American rock elm and a fore end made from English elm. The stem was made of teak and English oak with an iron floor as the deck. The ship also had copper and iron fastings. The ships was also registered in London under the name Wilson & Co. Messrs Wilson & Co. was based out of Sydney, Australia. The ship carried a comparative classification under American Lloyd's as "First class-third grade"
SS Kwinana was an Australian ocean-going cargo and passenger steamship. She was built in England in 1892 as the cargo ship SS Darius. In 1912 she changed owners, was refitted as a cargo and passenger ship and renamed Kwinana.

George Henry "Harry" Purvis, AFC was an Australian pioneer aviator, engineer, airline pilot, air-force pilot and author. He was the engineer responsible for maintenance of the famed Southern Cross aircraft. Purvis often flew as co-pilot with Sir Charles Kingsford Smith and was the last person to fly the Southern Cross. Purvis was co-pilot to P. G. Taylor on the first flight across the lower Pacific Ocean from Australia to South America, landing in Chile in 1951.
The SS Trebartha was a 4,597 GRT cargo carrying steamship built in 1920 by John Readhead & Sons Ltd of South Shields for the Hain Steamship Company. She was attacked by German aircraft on the 11th November and sank on the 12th November 1940.
