The North of England Trimmers' and Teemers Association was a trade union in the United Kingdom. The union was formed in 1871 and merged with the Tyne and Blyth association in 1902. [1] It had 1,500 members in 1908, increasing to 1,913 in 1915. [2]
Trimmers and teemers were employed in loading coal onto ships from staithes. [3] Teemers would open the trapdoors on rail waggons which had been positioned above the ships' hoppers. [3] The trimmers would then distribute the coal evenly around the hopper using shovels. [3]

The World Federation of Trade Unions (WFTU) is an international federation of trade unions. WFTU was established in 1945 to replace the International Federation of Trade Unions. Its mission was to bring together trade unions across the world in a single international organization, much like the United Nations. After a number of Western trade unions left it in 1949, as a result of disputes over support for the Marshall Plan, to form the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions, the WFTU was made up primarily of unions affiliated with or sympathetic to communist parties. In the context of the Cold War, the WFTU was often portrayed as a Soviet front organization. A number of those unions, including those from Yugoslavia and China, left later when their governments had ideological differences with the Soviet Union.
The 1926 general strike in the United Kingdom was a general strike that lasted nine days, from 4 to 12 May 1926. Some 1.7 million workers went out, especially in transport and heavy industry. The government was prepared, and enlisted middle class volunteers to maintain essential services. There was little violence and the TUC gave up in defeat.

A fireman, stoker or watertender is a person whose occupation it is to tend the fire for the running of a boiler, heating a building, or powering a steam engine. Much of the job is hard physical labor, such as shoveling fuel, typically coal, into the boiler's firebox. On steam locomotives the title fireman is usually used, while on steamships and stationary steam engines, such as those driving saw mills, the title is usually stoker. The German word Heizer is equivalent and in Dutch the word stoker is mostly used too. The United States Navy referred to them as watertenders.
