National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL) is an initiative funded by Ministry of Human Resource and Development, Government of India and coordinated by IIT Madras and other IITs. The project's central idea is to put recorded lectures taught by its member institutes online for open access. It is has of the most extensive educational YouTube channel covering engineering, basic sciences, and some humanities and social sciences subjects. [1] [2]

History

NPTEL was initiated in 2003 by seven IITs (Bombay, Delhi, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras, Guwahati and Roorkee) and Indian Institute of Science (IISc). [3] Since March 2014, NPTEL began offering online courses along with certificates to those who completed the courses successfully. [2]

Statistics

According to Alexa, NPTEL's website is ranked 155 in India and 1472 globally. [4] Its YouTube channel has more than 1,400,000 subscribers, 20000 videos, and over 332 million total views. [5] In comparison, MIT OpenCourseware has nearly 2 million subscribers, but 164 million views. [6] Its content is distributed under the CC BY-SA (Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike) license. M. S. Ananth Indian academic

Madaboosi Santanam Ananth is an Indian academic who served as the director of the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras from 2001 to 2011. He was presented with The Herdillia award for excellence in basic research in chemical engineering.

Indian Institutes of Technology Autonomous Indian public engineering institute group

The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are an autonomous public technical and research university located in India. They are governed by the Institutes of Technology Act, 1961 which has declared them as institutions of national importance and lays down their powers, duties, and framework for governance. The Institutes of Technology Act, 1961 lists twenty-three institutes. Each IIT is autonomous, linked to the others through a common council, which oversees their administration. Surendra Prasad is an Indian communications engineer, a former director and an Usha chair professor of the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi. He is also an emeritus professor of Bharti School of Telecommunication Technology And Management, a joint venture of IIT Delhi and is known for developing new techniques, algorithms and hardware in signal processing. He is an elected fellow of all the three major Indian science academies viz. Indian Academy of Sciences, Indian National Science Academy and the National Academy of Sciences, India. as well as the Indian National Academy of Engineering. The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, the apex agency of the Government of India for scientific research, awarded him the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology, one of the highest Indian science awards for his contributions to Engineering Sciences in 1988.

Yendluri Shanthi Pavan is an Indian electrical engineer and a professor at the Department of Electrical Engineering of the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras. He is known for his studies on mixed signal VLSI circuits and is an elected fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineering. The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, the apex agency of the Government of India for scientific research, awarded him the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology, one of the highest Indian science awards for his contributions to Engineering Sciences in 2012.

Subramaniam Ganesh is an Indian geneticist, molecular biologist and a professor at the department of biological sciences and bio-engineering of the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur. Known for his pioneering studies on Lafora progressive myoclonic epilepsy and other neurodegenerative disorders, Ganesh is an elected fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Sciences, India. The Department of Biotechnology of the Government of India awarded him the National Bioscience Award for Career Development, one of the highest Indian science awards, for his contributions to biosciences in 2008.

National Institute of Technical Teachers Training and Research, Chennai

National Institute of Technical Teachers' Training and Research, Chennai is an autonomous educational institution under the Ministry of Human Resource Development(or MHRD), Government of India. NITTTR Chennai is one of the National Coordinator for SWAYAM MOOC project of MHRD. SWAYAM is an integrated Massive Open Online Courses portal for online courses of higher education. For ensuring quality content, nine National Coordinators have been appointed. The online courses related to Post-Graduation Education is under the purview of University Grants Commission, and for Under-Graduation Education the Consortium for Educational Communication is coordinating the online course creation. The National Programme on Technology Enhance Learning is coordinating online courses for Indian Institute of Technology and Indian Institute of Science. The NITTTR Chennai is coordinating for online courses for teachers training program.
