Oark High School is a comprehensive public high school serving students in grades 7 through 12 in the rural community of Oark, Arkansas, United States. It is one of four public high schools in Johnson County. With fewer than 75 students in the 2012–13 school year, it is the smallest of the three high schools administered by the Jasper School District and one of the smallest in the state.

Oark is an unincorporated community in Johnson County, Arkansas, United States. Oark is located on Arkansas Highway 215, 16 miles (26 km) northwest of Clarksville. Oark has a post office with ZIP Code 72852. The community is surrounded by the Ozark National Forest with the scenic Mulberry River nearby. The origin of the town’s name is unknown, although many believe it came from French trappers that frequented this isolated valley in the 18th century.

It was previously a part of the Oark School District. On July 1, 2004, the Oark district, along with the Kingston School District, merged into the Jasper district. [4]

Academics

The school is accredited by the Arkansas Department of Education (ADE). The assumed course of study follows the ADE Smart Core curriculum developed the ADE, which requires students to complete at least 22 credit units before graduation. Students engage in regular (core) and career focus courses and exams and may select Advanced Placement (AP) coursework and exams that may lead to college credit.

Advanced Placement (AP) is a program in the United States and Canada created by the College Board which offers college-level curricula and examinations to high school students. American colleges and universities may grant placement and course credit to students who obtain high scores on the examinations. The AP curriculum for each of the various subjects is created for the College Board by a panel of experts and college-level educators in that field of study. For a high school course to have the designation, the course must be audited by the College Board to ascertain that it satisfies the AP curriculum. If the course is approved, the school may use the AP designation and the course will be publicly listed on the AP Course Ledger.

The Oark High School mascot and athletic emblem is the Hornet with the school colors of purple and gold.

Hornets are the largest of the eusocial wasps, and are similar in appearance to their close relatives yellowjackets. Some species can reach up to 5.5 cm (2.2 in) in length. They are distinguished from other vespine wasps by the relatively large top margin of the head and by the rounded segment of the abdomen just behind the waist. Worldwide, there are 22 recognized species of Vespa, Most species only occur in the tropics of Asia, though the European hornet, is widely distributed throughout Europe, Russia, North America and Northeast Asia. Wasps native to North America in the genus Dolichovespula are commonly referred to as hornets, but are actually yellowjackets.

Athletics

The Oark Hornets participate in interscholastic activities in the 1A Classification within the 1A West Conference as administered by the Arkansas Activities Association. The Hornets school athletic activities include cross country (boys/girls), basketball (boys/girls), and track and field (boys/girls). [5]

The Arkansas Activities Association (AAA) is the primary sanctioning body for high school sports in state of Arkansas. AAA is a member association of the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFSHSA). Every public secondary school in Arkansas is a de jure member of the AAA, and most private schools, save for a few schools in the delta that belong to the Mississippi Private Schools Association, are included in membership.

Clubs and traditions

OHS students can participate in clubs and activities including Band, Choir, Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA), National FFA Organization (FFA), National Honor Society (NHS), Quiz Bowl, Student Council, Drama Club, National Beta Club, and the Oark Writers Guild.
