Odeon Cinemas Group Limited [1] is Europe's largest cinema operator. Through subsidiaries it has over 360 cinemas, with 2900 screens in 14 countries in Europe, 120 cinemas with 960 screens are in the UK. [2] It receives more than 2.2 million guests per week. [3] [4]

Odeon Cinemas Group is a wholly owned subsidiary of AMC Theatres. [5] [6] The company has three main subsidiaries, Nordic Cinema Group, UCI Cinemas, and Odeon Cinemas. Nordic Cinema Group in turn owns Finnkino and its subsidiary Forum Cinemas.

History

The company was incorporated in London, England, on 22 June 2016, [7] as part of a $1.2 billion takeover of Odeon Cinemas and United Cinemas International by AMC Theatres. The deal left Odeon Cinemas as a wholly owned subsidiary of Odeon Cinemas Group. [8] AMC claimed after the acquisition that it was the "largest movie exhibition company in the world". [9]

David Anderson was appointed as chief commercial officer on 27 October 2017, replacing Ian Shepherd. [10] [11] When he was appointed, the group managing director was Mark Way and the chief operating officer was Jan Bernhardsson. The company received the 2018 CIPD People Management Awards for "Best international HR initiative". [12] Having won in the "Talent Management" category in 2017. [13]

In March 2018, Reuters reported that AMC was working with Citi to potentially float the company on the London Stock Exchange in a $2 billion IPO. [14] [15]

On March 17, 2020, all of its UK-area theatres temporarily closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. [16]

The Point is an entertainment complex in Central Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire, England. When it opened in 1985, it was called the UK's first multiplex cinema although the UK had introduced multi-screen cinemas in 1930 and had been increasing the number of screens in cinemas ever since. The front part of the building has a distinctive mirrored crystal ziggurat shape, framed by external steel beams at each corner, joined at the apex. Originally it had red neon lights connecting the apexes at each side, so that it looked like a pyramid at night.

Bradford Odeon is the name applied to two different cinemas in central Bradford, West Yorkshire, England. One, in Godwin Street, was built in 1930 and survives; the other, in Manchester Road, was built in 1938 and demolished in 1969.

Nordic Cinema Group is a Swedish company which owns 103 cinemas and 590 cinema saloons in six countries. It was founded in 2013 through a merger of Filmstaden in Sweden, Odeon Kino in Norway, Finnkino in Finland and Forum Cinemas in the Baltics. Between 2013 and 2017, it was owned by both Bridgepoint and Bonnier Group.

Cinesa – Compañía de Iniciativas y Espectáculos, S.A., trading as Cinesa, is a Spanish film exhibition company founded in 1944. It currently has 35 complexes and 417 cinemas throughout Spain. The company is part of the Odeon Cinemas Group, a group that operates in several European countries such as Spain, United Kingdom, Ireland, Germany, Italy and Portugal. Since 2016, Odeon Cinemas Group is owned by AMC Theatres.
