The Official Dreamcast Magazine (commonly abbreviated as ODCM and formerly known as Official Sega Dreamcast Magazine) was a video game magazine for the Dreamcast video game console published in the United States. It was published by Imagine Media. [3]

History

The magazine's initial issue "0" was released in June 1999, a full 3 months before the launch of the system. This issue featured Sonic the Hedgehog on a black cover, along with the launch date and some of the system's unique features. [4] Upon the magazines release on August 24, 1999, they printed 330,000 copies of the debut issue. [5] The magazine ran for twelve issues from the September 1999 Dreamcast launch to March/April 2001, shortly after Dreamcast was discontinued. [6]

Starting with issue 2, each issue came with a GD-ROM with demos of Dreamcast games. [7] The final issue did not come with a disc. This was explained as Sega looking for a new way to distribute demos. The cancellation was apparently unexpected as the magazine promised more information about demo distribution in future issues and had a preview for the next issue where Phantasy Star Online was to be reviewed. Much of the staff went on to work for Official Xbox Magazine .

The magazine was published bimonthly, but during the 2000 holiday season, issues were sold monthly due to additional relevant content being available for the shopping season.

Structure and features

The first issue introduced the Dreamcast console, the magazine itself, profiles of game designers, and Dreamcast news from Europe and Japan.

Visuals: The magazine featured a variety of images, often including detailed game walkthroughs and gameplay screenshots.

Game Reviews: Each issue included reviews of Dreamcast games, offering gameplay analysis, an overall impression, and rating.

Previews: The magazine provided sneak peeks at upcoming Dreamcast games, highlighting new gameplay mechanics and features.

Developer Interviews: There were interviews with game developers, including Sega executives and industry experts, offering insights into game development and trends.=

Special Features

Hardware Tutorials: Guides on how to use or enhance Dreamcast hardware.

Tips and Tricks: Strategies for players to improve their gameplay.

Strategy Sections: Walkthroughs, cheat codes, and strategies for popular Dreamcast titles.

Hardware & Accessories: Dedicated to Dreamcast peripherals, such as controllers, memory cards, and Visual Memory Units .

Reader Interaction: Fans could write in, comment, and provide feedback, creating a space for community engagement.

This structure allowed Dreamcast Magazine to cater to both casual and dedicated Dreamcast fans, offering a balance of game-focused content and interactive features.

Games seen within the Official Dreamcast Magazines received a rating of M for Mature 17+ on the ESRB scale. Most games displayed within the magazines were rated M for mature, such as Dino Crisis, Resident Evil, Half-Life, Record of Lodoss War, and Unreal Tournament [9] [10] . The content within the magazine was considered provocative, often picturing women who are in bikinis or other revealing clothing. [13] The Official Dreamcast Magazine UK is marketed towards "predominantly, but not exclusively, 22–30 year old males, who may or may not have an existing interest in gaming." [14] This helped Sega expand its market to older audiences rather than just teens and younger children. [15] [9] [10]

Reviews

The magazine used multiple reviewing techniques, including the 24-hour review, where a reviewer would play the game for 24 hours, even if the game was bad. They also compared games to similar ones. [16]

The Dreamcast was known for being very honest with their reviews, sometimes seen as even "too harsh." Writers often rated games on a lower scale than other magazines at the time. [17]

Reception

At the beginning of the magazines start, they were selling more than 250,000 copies, which is similar to Electronic Gaming Monthly's circulation. [18] The magazine's short two year run was initially started to boost the new console the Dreamcast. [19] The Dreamcast console sales reflected the magazine sales. By 2000, Sega was losing money on each console and was relying on games to cover it, they were loosing about 400 million dollars a year. [18] The next year, 2001, the final issue of the Dreamcast Magazine was released. [6]

Sonic Adventure is a 1998 platform game developed by Sonic Team and published by Sega for the Dreamcast. It was the first main Sonic the Hedgehog game to feature 3D gameplay. It follows Sonic the Hedgehog, Miles "Tails" Prower, Knuckles the Echidna, Amy Rose, Big the Cat, and E-102 Gamma in their quests to collect the Chaos Emeralds and stop Doctor Robotnik from unleashing Chaos, an ancient evil. Controlling one of the six characters—each with their own abilities—players complete levels to progress the story. Sonic Adventure retains many elements from prior Sonic games, such as power-ups and the ring-based health system. Players can play minigames such as racing and interact with Chao, a virtual pet.

<i>Phantasy Star Online</i> 2000 video game

Phantasy Star Online is an online role-playing game (RPG) developed by Sonic Team and published by Sega in 2000 for the Dreamcast. It was the first successful online RPG for game consoles; players adventure with up to three others over the internet to complete quests, collect items and fight enemies in real-time action RPG combat. The story is unrelated to previous games in the Phantasy Star series.

<i>ChuChu Rocket!</i> 1999 video game

ChuChu Rocket! is a 1999 action puzzle game developed by Sonic Team and published by Sega for the Dreamcast. The objective is for the player to place arrows on a board to lead mice into escape rockets while avoiding cats. The game features single-player modes in which a player must save all the mice on a board, and a multiplayer mode in which players battle to collect the most mice.

In the history of video games, the sixth generation era is the era of computer and video games, video game consoles, and handheld gaming devices available at the turn of the 21st century, starting on November 27, 1998. Platforms in the sixth generation include consoles from four companies: the Sega Dreamcast (DC), Sony PlayStation 2 (PS2), Nintendo GameCube (GC), and Microsoft Xbox. This era began on November 27, 1998, with the Japanese release of the Dreamcast, which was joined by the PlayStation 2 on March 4, 2000, the GameCube on September 14, 2001 and the Xbox on November 15, 2001, respectively. On March 31, 2001, the Dreamcast was among the first to be discontinued. Xbox in 2006, GameCube in 2007 and PlayStation 2 was the last, in January 2013. Meanwhile, the seventh generation of consoles started on November 22, 2005, with the launch of the Xbox 360.

Death Crimson OX is a light gun shooting game developed by Ecole Software. It was released in arcades in 2000 then ported to the Dreamcast console in 2001, several months after Sega had dropped support for the console. It is the third and final game in the Death Crimson series, and the only one to be released outside Japan. The game was also released as Guncom 2 in Europe and Death Crimson OX+ in Japan on the PlayStation 2.

<i>D2</i> (video game) 1999 video game

D2 is a survival horror video game developed by Warp for the Dreamcast. Directed and written by Kenji Eno, it was published by Warp in Japan in 1999 and by Sega in North America in 2000. D2 stars the "digital actress" Laura but has an independent story unrelated to the original D, and uses action-oriented gameplay in contrast to the puzzle-driven D.

<i>Blue Stinger</i> 1999 video game

Blue Stinger is a 1999 action-adventure game developed by Climax Graphics for the Dreamcast. It was published by Sega in Japan, and by Activision in Western territories as a console launch title. The story follows emergency rescuer Eliot Ballade after he is stranded on the monster-infested Dinosaur Island and allies with fellow survivors and the alien being Nephilim to find the source of the monsters. Gameplay has Eliot navigating Dinosaur Island, fighting monsters using various weapons found or purchased during the game, and finding items to progress to other areas.

<i>Crazy Taxi</i> Series of racing video games

Crazy Taxi is a series of racing games developed by Hitmaker and published by Sega. It was first available as an arcade video game in 1999, then released for the Dreamcast console in 2000. It is the third best-selling Dreamcast game in the United States, selling over a million copies. The game was later ported to the PlayStation 2, GameCube, and IBM PC compatibles with sequels also appearing on the Xbox, Game Boy Advance, and PlayStation Portable systems.

<i>Resident Evil – Code: Veronica</i> 2000 video game

Resident Evil – Code: Veronica is a survival horror video game developed and published by Capcom and originally released for the Dreamcast in 2000. It is the fourth main installment in the Resident Evil series and the first to debut on a separate platform from the PlayStation. The story takes place three months after the events of Resident Evil 2 (1998) and the concurrent destruction of Raccoon City as seen in Resident Evil 3: Nemesis (1999). It follows Claire Redfield and her brother Chris Redfield in their efforts to survive a viral outbreak at a remote prison island in the Southern Ocean and a research facility in Antarctica. The game retains the traditional survival horror controls and gameplay of previous installments; however, unlike the pre-rendered backgrounds of previous games, Code: Veronica uses real-time 3D environments and dynamic camera movement.

<i>Virtua Fighter 3</i> 1996 video game

Virtua Fighter 3 is a 1996 fighting game developed and published by Sega, the sequel to 1994's Virtua Fighter 2 as part of the Virtua Fighter series. Released originally in arcades, Virtua Fighter 3 was the first arcade game to run on the Sega Model 3 system board. The use of this new hardware gave the game revolutionary graphics for its time. Two new characters were added to the roster: Aoi and Taka-Arashi, both of whom are oriented around traditional Japanese martial arts.

<i>Scud Race</i> 1996 video game

Scud Race, known as Sega Super GT in North America, is an arcade racing video game released by Sega in 1996. It is the first racing game to use the Sega Model 3 hardware. Despite being released well within the lifetime of the Sega Saturn, no Saturn port was ever announced. A Dreamcast port was announced for the system's 1998 launch lineup and was shown as a tech-demo in the Dreamcast Presentation in 1998, but was cancelled.

The magazine held the license for the Sega Dreamcast console in the UK and featured a DreamOn demo disc on almost every cover. The magazine also featured complete games Sega Swirl and Planet Ring on its front cover. The magazine also covered fashion related to Dreamcast gaming but this feature was dropped in later issues.

The Dreamcast VGA Box is an accessory for the Dreamcast, a video game console produced by Sega, that allows it to output to a computer monitor or a high-definition television (HDTV) set through a VGA connector in 480p, otherwise known as progressive scan. The Dreamcast was one of the first consoles to support 480p and HDTV in general. Sega released the VGA Box as an official accessory in Japan on January 14, 1999, at an MSRP of ¥7000; it was only available in the United States via Sega's online store, retailing between $30 and $50. Though the VGA Box did not receive a release in Europe, PAL consoles can use it since it has no regional lockout.
