Ogbert the Nerd is an American emo band from New Brunswick, New Jersey. The band formed in 2018 and has released one album, I Don't Hate You in 2020, an EP, and a few singles.
Named after a joke from 30 Rock, the band members grew up in the New Jersey music scene, attending shows and playing in various bands, then formed Ogbert the Nerd in 2018. [1]
On February 24, 2019, the band put out their first release, an EP simply titled EP. Recorded between January and February of that year, it featured three songs that would later be re-recorded for the band's debut.
On Halloween 2020, the band released Do It For Elio and announced that their debut album would be released on December 11. [2] On November 27, the band released the second single for the album, Snail. [3] I Don't Hate You, their debut, was released through Sun Eater Records. [1] [4] In an overall positive review, Stereogum's Chris DeVille called the album "extremely fun and shouty", as well as "raw, unhinged, [and] massively catchy". [5] IDIOTEQ referred to as "brilliantly contagious and emotionally raw". [6]
The following two years, NJ.com included the band on their lists of "N.J. Bands You Need To Hear". [7] [8]
In 2021, the band released I Don't Hate You: Bric-à-brac Edition, featuring instrumentals, demos, and live performances of songs from I Don't Hate You. [9]
In 2022, Ogbert the Nerd released the single A New Kind of Borkulator. [10] Stereogum's DeVille noted that the song "leads with a piercing vocal line that will be a litmus test for your tolerance of screechy, neurotic emo vocals." He concluded, "Those who vibe with that style will be treated to another chaotically catchy barnburner full of rad riffs and memorable lyrics". [10]
The following year, the band released the single Bike Cops. [11] Stereogum's DeVille wrote, "It’ll raise your pulse, test your lung capacity, and send tingles down your spine". IDIOTEQ called it "an adrenaline-fueled, emo-drenched spectacle, with intense lyrics". [6] The single was later issued as a limited edition 7" vinyl in 2024 on lead singer Madison James' Bored Science Ltd label.
Emo is a music genre characterized by emotional, often confessional lyrics. It emerged as a style of hardcore punk and post-hardcore from the mid-1980s Washington, D.C. hardcore scene, where it was known as emotional hardcore or emocore. The bands Rites of Spring and Embrace, among others, pioneered the genre. In the early-to-mid 1990s, emo was adopted and reinvented by alternative rock, indie rock, punk rock, and pop-punk bands, including Sunny Day Real Estate, Jawbreaker, Cap'n Jazz, and Jimmy Eat World. By the mid-1990s, Braid, the Promise Ring, and the Get Up Kids emerged from Midwest emo, and several independent record labels began to specialize in the genre. Meanwhile, screamo, a more aggressive style of emo using screamed vocals, also emerged, pioneered by the San Diego bands Heroin and Antioch Arrow. Screamo achieved mainstream success in the 2000s with bands like Hawthorne Heights, Silverstein, Story of the Year, Thursday, the Used, and Underoath.
The Hives are a Swedish rock band formed in Fagersta in 1993. After gaining traction in Sweden through the 1990s, they rose to worldwide prominence in the early 2000s during the garage rock revival. The band's line-up—consisting of Howlin' Pelle Almqvist (vocals), Nicholaus Arson, Vigilante Carlstroem, Dr. Matt Destruction (bass), and Chris Dangerous (drums)—remained unchanged from 1993 until 2013, when Matt Destruction retired for health reasons and was replaced by The Johan and Only.

Empire! Empire! was an American emo band from Michigan. It was formed in 2006 originally as a solo project of band member Keith Latinen. The band's music is most often described as emotional indie rock reminiscent of '90s emo bands such as Mineral and American Football. The band's first release was in 2007 with an EP titled When The Sea Became A Giant. The band released a full-length album, What It Takes To Move Forward, in 2009. The band is signed to Count Your Lucky Stars Records and has released albums on a number of other labels, such as strictly no capital letters (UK), Topshelf Records, Stiff Slack (Japan), and Hobbledehoy Record Co (Australia). The band released their second album You Will Eventually Be Forgotten on August 19, 2014. On February 16, 2016, the band announced their final tour before their breakup on their official Facebook page.
A Great Big Pile of Leaves is an American indie rock band from Brooklyn, New York, currently signed to Topshelf Records. It was founded by guitarist/singer Pete Weiland and drummer Tyler Soucy, who began creating and recording their music in 2007. After the release of their first two EPs The Fiery Works and The Fiery Works II, Tucker Yaro joined the group. The trio then recorded their first full-length album, Have You Seen My Prefrontal Cortex?. In November 2011, the band released two EPs entitled Boom! and Live from the Living Room with Topshelf Records. Both EPs were released on limited edition vinyl and are also available for digital download. Their third LP, Pono, was released on August 13, 2021.

The emo revival, or fourth wave emo, was an underground emo movement which began in the late 2000s and flourished until the mid-to-late 2010s. The movement began towards the end of the 2000s third-wave emo, with Pennsylvania-based groups such as Tigers Jaw, Algernon Cadwallader and Snowing eschewing that era's mainstream sensibilities in favor of influence from 1990s Midwest emo. Acts like Touché Amoré, La Dispute and Defeater drew from 1990s emo and especially its heavier counterparts, such as screamo and post-hardcore.
Pity Sex are an American alternative rock band from Ann Arbor, Michigan. The band formed in 2011, and released two studio albums – Feast of Love (2013) and White Hot Moon (2016) – prior to their split. The band combined elements of indie rock, shoegaze, dream pop and noise rock in their music, and were described by Pitchfork as "post-coital pop-punk". The band announced its reunion in 2022, as part of the Sound & Fury festival line-up.
Pinegrove is an American rock band formed in Montclair, New Jersey in 2010. The band's lineup is largely fluid and variable, with singer-songwriter Evan Stephens Hall and drummer Zach Levine representing its core members. The two met as children and played in various bands before founding Pinegrove. Cigarettes After Sex is an American dream pop band formed in El Paso, Texas, in 2008 by Greg Gonzalez. The band is known for their ethereal, limerent and often dream-like musical style, lyrics often based on the themes of romance and love, as well as Gonzalez's voice, which has been described as "androgynous". While marketed as an ambient pop band, Cigarettes After Sex are also considered to be shoegaze, slowcore and indie rock.

In March 2020, It Looks Sad. put out a four-track EP, Songs for Quarantine.
To See the Next Part of the Dream is the second studio album by South Korean musician Parannoul, released independently on 23 February 2021. It was later released through Longinus Recordings and Poclanos. Parannoul is an anonymous man of whom little information is known. He recorded the album over several years in his bedroom. Sources characterized the album's genres as shoegaze, lo-fi, emo, and indie rock. All instruments in To See the Next Part of the Dream are virtual and its volume usually reach clipping levels. The lyrics were influenced by Parannoul's depression and struggles, while also referencing youth. The album contains elements of nostalgia and 2000s culture. Following its release, the album received a cult following and popularity on the Internet. To See the Next Part of the Dream was critically acclaimed and considered one of the best albums of 2021.
Home Is Where is an American emo band from Palm Coast, Florida. The band has released two EPs and two albums. Their first EP, Our Mouths to Smile, was released in 2019. Their debut album, I Became Birds, was released in 2021 and brought them considerably more attention, including landing on numerous end of the year lists. In 2022, they released a split EP with Denton, Texas emo band Record Setter titled dissection lesson.
