The Ohio Match Company Railway was a logging railroad in northern Idaho that operated from Garwood, Idaho, around Hayden Lake and followed the Burnt Cabin Creek to the Little North Fork of the Coeur d'Alene River. [1] [2] The right of way roughly follows Ohio Match Road from Garwood, Idaho Burnt Cabin Road and then over the entirety of Burnt Cabin Road today. The Ohio Match railroad aided in harvesting white pine timber reserves that remained after the fire of 1910 for the production of matchsticks. [1] [3] [2]
Perl Bailey managed the Ohio Match Company’s western operation. [4] H. A. Biggs was the engineer tasked with building the Ohio Match Railway. [3] The Ohio Match railway was initially 25 miles (40 km) long, and stretched from the Spokane International in Garwood, Idaho around the north end of Hayden Lake over several grades to follow the Burnt Cabin Creek to the Little North Fork of the Coeur d'Alene River. [3] The Ohio Match railroad connected 80,000 million acres of white pine timber reserves that remained after the fire of 1910 to the Atlas Tie Co. in Hayden, Idaho, to the Spokane International in Garwood, Idaho, and the Spokane, Coeur d'Alene and Palouse electric railroad in Hayden, Idaho, which brought lumber to Lake Coeur d'Alene to be floated to mills in and around Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. [1] [3] [4] The Ohio Match Company served two mines, the Inland Mine (Burnt Cabin Prospect) and Commonwealth Mine, along its route. [5] [6] The Ohio Match Railway costed $1,000,000 in 1924 (Roughly $16,000,000 in 2022 or $650,000 per mile) to construct. The railway eventually extended beyond Horse Heaven covering a total of 48 miles (77 km). [4] Two of Ohio Match Railway's locomotives, a climax and a shay, were sold to the U.S. Navy in 1940 to aid in the construction of Farragut Naval Base in Farragut, Idaho at the start of World War II. Farragut State Park is a public recreation area located at the southern tip of Lake Pend Oreille in the Coeur d'Alene Mountains of the Idaho Panhandle in the northwest United States. The 4,000-acre (1,600 ha) state park is five miles (8 km) east of Athol in Kootenai County, about thirty miles (50 km) northeast of Coeur d'Alene. Activities include camping, picnicking, hiking, mountain biking, cycling, fishing, boating, swimming, water sports, orienteering, disc golf, flying model aircraft, archery, and horseback riding.

It follows the former Union Pacific Railroad right-of-way from Mullan, a mountain mining town near the Montana border, westward to Plummer, a town on the prairie near the Washington border. Generally following the Coeur d'Alene River, the rail line was abandoned in 1991, and the trail officially opened in March 2004.

The area's indigenous people settled there due to the fertile hunting grounds and abundance of salmon in the Spokane River. The first European to explore the Inland Northwest was Canadian explorer-geographer David Thompson, working as head of the North West Company's Columbia Department. At the nexus of the Little Spokane and the Spokane, Thompson's men built a new fur trading post, which is the first long-term European settlement in Washington state.
The economy of the Spokane Metropolitan Area plays a vital role as the hub for the commercial, manufacturing, and transportation center as well as the medical, shopping, and entertainment hub of the 80,000 square miles (210,000 km2) Inland Northwest region. Although the two have opted not to merge into a single Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) yet, the Coeur d'Alene MSA has been combined by the Census Bureau into the Spokane–Coeur d'Alene combined statistical area (CSA). The CSA comprises the Spokane metropolitan area and the Coeur d'Alene metropolitan area anchored by Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Spokane metropolitan area has a workforce of about 287,000 people and an unemployment rate of 5.3 percent as of February 2020; the largest sectors for non–farm employment are education and health services, trade, transportation, and utilities, and government. The Coeur d'Alene metropolitan area has a workforce of 80,000 people and an unemployment rate of 6.8% as of June 2020; the largest sectors for non-farm employment are trade, transportation, and utilities, government, and education and health services as well as leisure and hospitality. In 2017, the Spokane–Spokane Valley metropolitan area had a gross metropolitan product of $25.5 billion while the Coeur d'Alene metropolitan area was $5.93 billion.
The Idaho Northern Railroad built a branch line of the Oregon Railroad and Navigation Company (OR&N) in northern Idaho, U.S., connecting the main line at Enaville with Paragon, a distance of 32.83 miles (52.83 km). The company was incorporated on January 10, 1906, and opened on August 1, 1909 as an operating subsidiary of the Union Pacific Railroad (UP), owner of the OR&N. On December 23, 1910, the property of the OR&N and Idaho Northern Railroad were conveyed to new UP subsidiary Oregon–Washington Railroad and Navigation Company.
Bayview is an unincorporated community in the northwest United States, located in Kootenai County, Idaho, north of Coeur d'Alene. On the southwest shore of Lake Pend Oreille, Bayview is seven miles (11 km) east-northeast of Athol. The community is served by State Highway 54 and a post office with ZIP code 83803; its approximate elevation is 2,100 feet (640 m) above sea level. Nearby is Farragut State Park, formerly the Farragut Naval Training Station, a major training facility during World War II.
The Spokane and Inland Empire Railroad Company (S.&I.E.R.R.Co.) was an electrified interurban railway operating in Spokane, Washington and vicinity, extending into northern and central Idaho. The system originated in several predecessor roads beginning c. 1890, incorporated in 1904, and ran under its own name to 1929. It merged into the Great Northern Railway and later, the Burlington Northern Railroad, which operated some roads into the 1980s.
Steam navigation on Lake Coeur d'Alene lasted from the 1880s to the 1930s. More steamboats operated on Lake Coeur d’Alene than on any other lake west of the Great Lakes. The high point of steam navigation was probably from 1908 to 1913. After that railroads, and increasingly automobile and truck traffic on newly built highways supplanted steam navigation, although some vessels continued to be operated until the mid-1930s.
