It is the only public college in Oklahoma with a strictly liberal arts–focused curriculum and is a member of the Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges. USAO is an undergraduate-only institution and grants bachelor's degrees in a variety of subject areas. The school was founded in 1908 as a school for women and from 1912 to 1965 was known as Oklahoma College for Women. It became coeducational in 1965 and today educates approximately 800 students. In 2001, the entire Oklahoma College for Women campus was listed as a national historic district.

The college was established in its present state in 1915 with the merger of the College of Letters, the College of Social Science, and the College of Natural Science. As of the 2022-23 academic year, there were about 23,601 undergraduates and 2,417 graduate students enrolled in the college. The College of Letters and Science awards only Bachelor of Arts degrees at the undergraduate level, in contrast to the other schools and colleges of UC Berkeley which award only Bachelor of Science degrees at the undergraduate level.

The University of Minnesota College of Liberal Arts (CLA) is the largest college of the University of Minnesota in the Twin Cities of Minnesota. Established in 1868, the College of Liberal Arts offers more than 65 majors and 70 minors to its more than 13,600 undergraduate students, as well as more than two dozen majors to its 1,500 graduate students. The various departments of the College of Liberal Arts are housed in several buildings located in both the East Bank and West Bank areas of the university's Minneapolis campus.

Glen Krutz is an American political science scholar and author, currently serving as the Dean of the University of Colorado Boulder College of Arts and Sciences. Before his appointment at CU Boulder, Krutz served as the dean of the Oklahoma State University College of Arts and Sciences, where he also held the Puterbaugh Foundation Chair and was a professor in the Department of Political Science.
