On Bodies was an American hardcore band active from 2009 to 2017. [1] [2] Principally based in Cincinnati, Ohio, where the majority of its members resided, it also included members from Michigan, Florida, New Jersey, and Kentucky. [3] [4] [5] The group was formed by guitarist, bass guitarist, drummer, backing vocalist, and principal songwriter Richard Thurston (formerly of Timescape Zero, Culture, Blood Has Been Shed, Diecast, One Nation Under, Terror, and Walls of Jericho), and vocalist and lyricist Damien Moyal (formerly of Culture, Shai Hulud, Morning Again, Bird of Ill Omen, As Friends Rust, Bridgeburne R, and Damien Done). [3] [4] [5] The band later also included former members of Until the End, Where Fear and Weapons Meet, Glasseater, Destro, Mixtapes, and The Homeless Gospel Choir.

The band released three extended plays during its span: Planet Hospice in 2012 (Eulogy Recordings / American Enemy Records), The Long Con in 2013 (Coffeebreath and Heartache Records / Irish VooDoo Records), and Unremarkably Mortal in 2015 (Irish VooDoo Records). The last two extended plays were combined into a compilation album titled Unremarkably Mortal + The Long Con for the Japanese and European markets in 2015 (Cosmic Note / Demons Run Amok Entertainment). The band also produced music videos for the singles "Just Can't Win" (2012) and "Down and Doubt" (2015).

History

On Bodies was formed by Cincinnati, Ohio-based guitarist, bass guitarist, drummer, backing vocalist, and principal songwriter Richard Thurston (formerly of Timescape Zero, Culture, Blood Has Been Shed, Diecast, One Nation Under, Terror, and Walls of Jericho), in August 2009. [3] He immediately approached his former Culture bandmate, vocalist and lyricist Damien Moyal, who was then based in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and had since played in Shai Hulud, Morning Again, Bird of Ill Omen, As Friends Rust, Bridgeburne R, and Damien Done. [4] [5] However, the project laid dormant for two years until Thurston reached out to Moyal again to record vocals over the completed songs in the spring of 2011. [6] [7]

After tracking nine songs as a two-piece, with Thurston playing all of the instruments, [6] [7] the band was signed to ex-Culture and Morning Again bandmate John Wylie's Florida-based record label, Eulogy Recordings in mid-2011. [1] [8] The band's debut extended play (originally recorded as a demo), Planet Hospice, was eventually released on February 14, 2012, on compact disc and digitally via Eulogy Recordings, while American Enemy Records issued a 10-inch vinyl version. [9] [10] [11]

In July 2011, On Bodies recruited Miami, Florida-based guitarist Richard Walbert (formerly of Destro, Where Fear and Weapons Meet and Until the End, and later of Morning Again), who, in turn, enlisted fellow Florida-based drummer Julio Marin (formerly of Destro and Glasseater), and guitarist Chad Kishick (formerly of Shai Hulud and Where Fear and Weapons Meet), in August 2011; Thurston assumed bass guitarist duties in the expanded line-up. [1] [12] Moyal, Walbert and Kishick had also previously played together in the short-lived project Best Wishes.

The full band debuted at Planet Hospice's release shows in late February 2012. [13] [12] The concerts were filmed and edited by Joshua Call and Andre Hopman, of the film production company Film Free Youth, into a music video for the single "Just Can't Win", which premiered on March 9, 2012. [14] As a full band, On Bodies recorded five songs for their sophomore extended play, The Long Con, in July 2012. It was finally issued, after some delay, on May 16, 2013, on 12-inch vinyl through German record label Coffeebreath and Heartache Records, [2] [15] [16] and much later, on March 2, 2015, again on 12-inch vinyl, through American record label Irish VooDoo Records. [17] [3] [18] By the spring of 2014, the three Florida-based members were dismissed in the hope of finding a more localized, Midwest-based membership for concerts.

Back as a two-piece, Thurston and Moyal recorded the band's third extended play, Unremarkably Mortal, in October 2014, before setting out to recruit new members. [18] For the band's new line-up, Thurston approached Cincinnati-based guitarist Zachary Colina, who had previously played in several bands with him, including One Nation Under, Against, Still Crossed, and Anthem. [19] [20] With an opportunity to tour Asia, the band quickly recruited New Jersey-based drummer Joshua Williams (formerly of Culture and As Friends Rust, and then a member of Morning Again), and Cincinnati-based bass guitarist and backing vocalist Joshua King (formerly of Suffocate Faster and Recon); Thurston assumed guitarist and backing vocalist duties in this formation. [19] [20] This line-up appeared in the music video for "Down and Doubt", which was released on February 17, 2015, to promote Unremarkably Mortal. [19] [20]

In March 2015, On Bodies embarked on a Japanese tour, promoting a compilation of its second and third extended plays, Unremarkably Mortal + The Long Con, released on compact disc through Cosmic Note on February 25, 2015. [17] [21] [18] Cosmic Note also included the song "Prevail" and the music video for "Down and Doubt" on its compact disc and digital video disc compilation Cosmic Note 2015. The band self-released the digital edition of Unremarkably Mortal on March 11, 2015, [21] while Irish VooDoo Records eventually released a 7-inch vinyl on August 3, 2015. [22] [19] [18]

Later in 2015, Thurston and Colina recruited Covington, Kentucky-based drummer Boone Haley (formerly of Mixtapes), and Cincinnati-based bass guitarist Megan Schroer (who later played in The Homeless Gospel Choir). [23] Colina, Haley and Schroer were then playing together in the band Head Collector, while Colina and Schroer also collaborated in the band Boys (which featured other members of Mixtapes). [21] German record label Demons Run Amok Entertainment re-issued the compilation Unremarkably Mortal + The Long Con on 12-inch vinyl on September 25, 2015. [21] The band embarked on mini-tours of the United States in November and December 2015. [21] Thurston and Moyal later recorded material for a fourth extended play in April 2017, but it was never released. [24]

The bands that accompanied As Friends Rust on these tours include Discount, Dillinger Four, Strike Anywhere, Grade, Ensign, Ignite, Good Clean Fun, Garrison, Glasseater, Mid Carson July, The Agency, Purusam, Fast Times and Keith Welsh.

After recording a demo tape but failing to secure a record deal, the band parted ways in February 1997.

As Friends Rust is the third release by American melodic hardcore band As Friends Rust. It was released on compact disc, 8-inch vinyl and digitally in the United States on September 17, 1999. The eponymous extended play was the band's first output as part of an exclusive three-record contract with Toledo, Ohio-based record company Doghouse Records. As Friends Rust was licensed by Doghouse Records to various foreign markets, beginning with Belgian record label Good Life Recordings, which released the extended play on compact disc and double 7-inch vinyl several months earlier in July 1999. The European edition features a bonus song and a different artwork, but was erroneously promoted by Good Life Recordings as God Hour, though that title never appeared on the actual release. Doghouse Records also licensed As Friends Rust to Japanese record label Howling Bull Entertainment, which released a compact disc edition on October 5, 1999, and British record label Golf Records, which released a compact disc edition on October 22, 2001; these versions included six additional songs, a different artwork, and were promoted under the title Eleven Songs.

Born in Amstelveen, North Holland, Netherlands, he moved to the United States as a child and grew up in Miami, Florida, where he notably fronted such hardcore punk, metallic hardcore, and melodic hardcore bands as Shai Hulud, As Friends Rust, Morning Again, Culture, Bird of Ill Omen, and Bridgeburne R. Moyal has been based in Ann Arbor, Michigan since 2006, and is the founding member of the semi-eponymously named gothic rock/post-punk band Damien Done.

As Friends Rust / Discount is a split extended play by Gainesville, Florida-based melodic hardcore band As Friends Rust and Vero Beach, Florida-based punk rock band Discount. It was released by Belgian record label Good Life Recordings in December 1998 on compact disc and 7" vinyl. In promotion of the release, As Friends Rust and Discount embarked on a six-week European and United Kingdom tour, from December 1998 to January 1999, accompanied by Swedish hardcore group Purusam. The European tour included a stop to play at the Good Life Winter Festival, in Kortrijk, Belgium.

Won is the first full-length album by American melodic hardcore band As Friends Rust. It was released on compact disc, 12-inch vinyl and digitally by American record label Doghouse Records on October 23, 2001. German record label Defiance Records licensed the rights to release the album on compact disc and 12-inch vinyl for the European market, though this edition was released a week earlier than the American one, on October 15, 2001. Morning Again is an American metalcore band from Florida. They were known for their metallic sound as well as for their straight edge, vegan, anti-religious and anti-government ideals. The band was a "sister band" to Culture, often switching members after one had left the other. Several members went on to play in other bands such as As Friends Rust and Dead Blue Sky. The band was originally from Cooper City, Florida, but moved to Coral Springs in 1998 before breaking up later that year. After playing several reunion shows over the years, the band released a new EP in 2018.

While in Gainesville, he notably played bass guitar and provided backing vocals in the melodic hardcore band As Friends Rust from 1998 to 2000, and in the hardcore punk band Bridgeburne R from 1999 to 2000. Stewart took part of As Friends Rust's reunion in 2008, and remained with the band until 2019.

Dutch record label Shield Recordings re-issued the compact disc and issued a 12-inch vinyl and digital editions for the European market on April 29, 2015, though this version omitted three songs due to vinyl time constraints.

Stay Black is the debut extended play by American gothic rock and roll / post-punk band Damien Done. Originally titled Love Thongs, it was recorded in September 2003 and scheduled for release in April 2004, through Belgian record label Good Life Recordings. The record company refused to release the extended play and kept it stuck in limbo for thirteen years, until German record label Demons Run Amok Entertainment licensed its rights in late 2015. While awaiting its official release, the band offered the music for free download and streaming across a variety of websites, with an often-changing track listing and several different cover artworks. Demons Run Amok Entertainment's official vinyl and digital release was finally issued on July 8, 2016.
