Damien Done is an American post-punk/gothic rock band from Ann Arbor, Michigan. [1] [3] [5] Formed in Gainesville, Florida in 2002 as a semi-eponymously-named solo project by frontman Damien Moyal, [6] [7] the group has since been expanded to include other band members and co-songwriters. [8] [9] The current lineup features Moyal (vocals, guitar, synthesizer, drum programming), Laura Jane Leonard (bass guitar) and Tyler Kane (guitar, bass guitar). [10]

Damien Done originally formed under the name Rubbers and recorded its debut EP, Love Thongs , in 2003. Scheduled for release through Belgian record label Good Life Recordings, the EP was ultimately shelved for thirteen years until it was picked up by German record label Demons Run Amok Entertainment, and released under the title Stay Black in 2016.

After a series of singles, the band followed-up with its first full-length album, Charm Offensive , released by American record label Mind Over Matter Records in 2018. Damien Done underwent several line-up changes and in 2020 released two EPs: Baby, Don't Hearse Me and To Night, both also on Mind Over Matter Records. The band's second full-length album, Total Power, was released through Mind Over Matter Records and Protagonist Music in 2023. [11]

Background

Love Thongs and Stay Black (2002–2016)

Damien Moyal had previously fronted such hardcore punk, metallic hardcore and melodic hardcore bands as Shai Hulud, Morning Again, As Friends Rust, Culture and Bird of Ill Omen during the 1990s and early 2000s. [7] [12] [13] [14] After leaving Gainesville, Florida-based As Friends Rust in February 2002, [15] [16] Moyal began working on solo material under the moniker Rubbers. [6] [17] [18] [19] "Dude Becomes Sea" was the first song Moyal wrote for the new project. [20]

Handling vocals and acoustic guitar, Moyal recruited drummer and keyboardist Matthew Crum, formerly of As Friends Rust and The Rocking Horse Winner; electric guitarist Juan Montoya, formerly of Floor and Cavity, and later of Torche; and electric guitarist and bass guitarist James Paul Wisner to record the six-song debut EP Love Thongs in September 2003. [7] [21] Wisner also engineered and produced the session. [21] A handful of band-made copies of Love Thongs were circulated by Moyal in late 2003. [22]

Rubbers was renamed Damien Done, [19] and the band was immediately signed to Belgian record label Good Life Recordings, which had previously released material by As Friends Rust, Morning Again, Culture and Shai Hulud. [19] [21] [23] Good Life Recordings owner, Edward Verhaeghe, invited Moyal to Belgium in November 2003, to film a music video for the lead single "The New Cleavage" (then titled "Ass-Crack Is the New Cleavage"), directed by Integrity vocalist Dwid Hellion. [19] [23] [21] [24] Love Thongs was scheduled for release through Good Life Recordings as a CD and DVD combo package in April 2004, but the release remained stuck in limbo for over a decade. [23] [25] Some of the songs from the session appeared on Good Life Recordings' Various Artists compilation Good Life Recordings Presents: Never Surrender - The Best New Underground Music 2004-2005 (2004), the Vice magazine travel documentary and its soundtrack The Vice Guide to Travel (2006) and the Belgian soft porn films J'fais du porno et j'aime ça and Skin. Like. Sun. (both 2009). [7] [26]

While awaiting the release of Love Thongs, Moyal recruited several new musicians, including former I Hate Myself drummer Jon Marburger; [27] former Shai Hulud, Cavity, 108, Against All Authority and Where Fear and Weapons Meet drummer (and then-member of Hazen Street and Until the End) Jason Lederman; [28] former Where Fear and Weapons Meet, Dashboard Confessional and Seville bass guitarist Daniel Bonebrake; [28] and former Glasseater guitarist (and future Poison the Well touring guitarist) Ariel Arro. [29] With Arro, Damien Done recorded a cover of Integrity's song "Eighteen", which was released on Escapist Records' Various Artists compilation Harder They Fall: Tribute to Integrity in February 2007. [30] [31] In 2006, Moyal relocated to Ann Arbor, Michigan. [29]

Love Thongs was eventually renamed Stay Black , and the EP was put up for free download through the band's Bandcamp page in 2011. [32] Stay Black was finally released on 12-inch vinyl by German record label Demons Run Amok Entertainment in July 2016. [7] [33] [34] Like Good Life Recordings, Demons Run Amok Entertainment had released material by Moyal's other bands, including Culture, As Friends Rust, Morning Again and On Bodies. [26] [35] Demons Run Amok Entertainment simultaneously released a 7-inch vinyl of two newly-recorded Damien Done songs: "He Really Tried" and "And Now the Rain" [36] [34] [9] The new songs featured drummer Timothy Kirkpatrick, formerly of Moments in Grace and then playing in As Friends Rust; bass guitarist Michael Hasty, formerly of Walls of Jericho; and electric guitarist Juan Montoya. [9] Hasty also engineered and produced the session. [9]

Charm Offensive and Total Power (2016–2023)

In December 2016, Moyal rebuilt the band with former Child Bite drummer Benjamin Moore, former Earthmover guitarist Andrew Dempz, and bass guitarist Laura Jane Leonard; Damien Done played its first show with the new line-up on December 21, 2016, at Detroit's UFO Factory. [37] In 2017, the band was signed to California-based record label Mind Over Matter Records, [38] releasing in September of that same year a 7-inch vinyl single of two new songs: "Curious Thing" and a cover of Killing Joke's "Primitive". [39] [40] [41] [42]

Damien Done followed-up with Charm Offensive , the band's first full-length album, released on 12-inch vinyl by Mind Over Matter Records in March 2018. [1] [2] In addition to the previously-released single "Curious Thing", the album also included the singles "Roof Access" and "The Lord Fox". [3] [43] [4] The album was released on 12-inch vinyl in Europe by Belgian record label Hypertension Records, and promoted through a nine-date European tour in August 2018. [1] [24] The band kicked-off their European tour by playing at Ieperfest in Ypres, Belgium, followed by shows in Germany, Czech Republic, Hungary, Austria and England. [1] [24] [44] [45]

The band spent the last few months of 2018 playing shows around Michigan in Ann Arbor, Detroit, Ypsilanti and Hamtramck, opening for Helen Money and Street Sects and performing at the No Rest Festival. [46] [47] In March 2019, Damien Done released a split 7-inch vinyl with British post-punk band DeadCuts through Speedowax Records. [48] [49] In 2019, guitarist Andrew Dempz was replaced by Tyler Kane. [50]

On Valentine's Day 2020, Damien Done released the digital EP Baby, Don't Hearse Me; an 11-inch screen-printed vinyl version was released by Mind Over Matter Records a month later. [5] The band quickly followed up with the To Night EP, [10] [51] released digitally in May 2020; a tape edition was released by Contraband Goods in October 2020, while Mind Over Matter Records and Speedowax Records co-released a double 7-inch vinyl version a year later in October 2021. [8] [52]

In November 2020, Damien Done released the three-song EP Demos from the Year 2020, which includes working versions of the band's sophomore full-length album, Total Power. [53] [54] In February 2021, Damien Done released the non-album single "Nightclubbing", a cover of the 1977 Iggy Pop and David Bowie song. [55]

On January 31, 2023, "Pray for Me", the first single from the band's second full-length album, Total Power, was released. [11] [56] The second single from Total Power, "Inexorcisable", was released on March 24, 2023, [57] [58] while the third single, "Bounty and Blight" (which features guest vocalist La Femme Pendu) was released on April 21, 2023. [59] A fourth song from Total Power, "Young Drugs", was released in advance of the album's release once pre-orders were accepted on May 5, 2023. [60] The album was scheduled for release through Mind Over Matter Records and Protagonist Music on May 19, 2023, but was delayed by several weeks due to pressing plant issues. [61] [57]

It was originally released by Belgian record label Good Life Recordings on July 13, 1998, on compact disc and 10" vinyl. American record label Doghouse Records reissued the release, under the expanded title The Fists of Time: An Anthology of Short Fiction and Non-Fiction, on compact disc, 12" vinyl and digitally, with new artwork and two additional songs, on June 22, 2000. In promotion of the release, As Friends Rust toured the United States, United Kingdom and Europe several times between June 1998 and September 2000. The bands that accompanied As Friends Rust on these tours include Discount, Dillinger Four, Strike Anywhere, Grade, Ensign, Ignite, Good Clean Fun, Garrison, Glasseater, Mid Carson July, The Agency, Purusam, Fast Times and Keith Welsh.

As Friends Rust is an American melodic hardcore band based in Gainesville, Florida. The original line-up, which included vocalist Damien Moyal, guitarist Henry Olmino, bass guitarist Jeronimo Gomez, and drummer Matthew Crum, formed in Davie, Florida in September 1996. After recording a demo tape but failing to secure a record deal, the band parted ways in February 1997.

<i>As Friends Rust</i> (EP) 1999 EP by As Friends Rust

As Friends Rust is the third release by American melodic hardcore band As Friends Rust. It was released on compact disc, 8-inch vinyl and digitally in the United States on September 17, 1999. The eponymous extended play was the band's first output as part of an exclusive three-record contract with Toledo, Ohio-based record company Doghouse Records. As Friends Rust was licensed by Doghouse Records to various foreign markets, beginning with Belgian record label Good Life Recordings, which released the extended play on compact disc and double 7-inch vinyl several months earlier in July 1999. The European edition features a bonus song and a different artwork, but was erroneously promoted by Good Life Recordings as God Hour, though that title never appeared on the actual release. Doghouse Records also licensed As Friends Rust to Japanese record label Howling Bull Entertainment, which released a compact disc edition on October 5, 1999, and British record label Golf Records, which released a compact disc edition on October 22, 2001; these versions included six additional songs, a different artwork, and were promoted under the title Eleven Songs.

Born in Amstelveen, North Holland, Netherlands, he moved to the United States as a child and grew up in Miami, Florida, where he notably fronted such hardcore punk, metallic hardcore, and melodic hardcore bands as Shai Hulud, As Friends Rust, Morning Again, Culture, Bird of Ill Omen, and Bridgeburne R. Moyal has been based in Ann Arbor, Michigan since 2006, and is the founding member of the semi-eponymously named gothic rock/post-punk band Damien Done.

Won is the first full-length album by American melodic hardcore band As Friends Rust. It was released on compact disc, 12-inch vinyl and digitally by American record label Doghouse Records on October 23, 2001. German record label Defiance Records licensed the rights to release the album on compact disc and 12-inch vinyl for the European market, though this edition was released a week earlier than the American one, on October 15, 2001. The band was a "sister band" to Culture, often switching members after one had left the other. Several members went on to play in other bands such as As Friends Rust and Dead Blue Sky. The band was originally from Cooper City, Florida, but moved to Coral Springs in 1998 before breaking up later that year. After playing several reunion shows over the years, the band released a new EP in 2018.

Richard Charles "Chip" Walbert II is an American musician, songwriter, and disc jockey, originally from Tampa, Florida, but long-established in Miami, Florida. He is best known for his time playing guitar in the hardcore punk and metalcore bands Where Fear and Weapons Meet, Until the End, Target Nevada, On Bodies, and Morning Again. He also played in the bands Destro, All Hell Breaks Loose, Dance Floor Justice, Phantom Drive, No Excuses, and More Than Ever.

Kaleb Stewart was an American musician, vocalist, songwriter and former skateboarder. Originally from Talkeetna, Alaska, he moved around in his childhood before settling in Tampa, Florida as a teenager, and later made his home in Gainesville, Florida. While in Gainesville, he notably played bass guitar and provided backing vocals in the melodic hardcore band As Friends Rust from 1998 to 2000, and in the hardcore punk band Bridgeburne R from 1999 to 2000. Stewart took part of As Friends Rust's reunion in 2008, and remained with the band until 2019.

After a brief stay in Ann Arbor, Michigan, where he played in the hardcore band Bloodpact, Kirkpatrick moved to Gainesville, Florida in 1997, and joined metallic hardcore band Culture and melodic hardcore band As Friends Rust, both with vocalist Damien Moyal.

Greatest Hits? is a compilation album by American melodic hardcore band As Friends Rust. It was originally released on compact disc by Japanese record label Cosmic Note on June 4, 2014. Indonesian record label D'Kolektif released the compilation on compact cassette on December 27, 2014. Dutch record label Shield Recordings re-issued the compact disc and issued a 12-inch vinyl and digital editions for the European market on April 29, 2015, though this version omitted three songs due to vinyl time constraints.

The group was formed by guitarist, bass guitarist, drummer, backing vocalist, and principal songwriter Richard Thurston, and vocalist and lyricist Damien Moyal. The band later also included former members of Until the End, Where Fear and Weapons Meet, Glasseater, Destro, Mixtapes, and The Homeless Gospel Choir.

Joseph Lee Simmons is an American guitarist, bass guitarist, songwriter and brewer. Originally from Houston, Texas, Simmons grew up in Coral Springs, Florida, where he notably played in the hardcore punk bands Dinner Time and Lock Down, the sludge metal band Bird of Ill Omen and the metallic hardcore band Morning Again. He later moved to Gainesville, Florida, where he played in the metallic hardcore bands Culture and Some Sort of Radio, the melodic hardcore band As Friends Rust, and the emotional hardcore / post-hardcore band Salem. He currently plays in the black metal band Rot in Coffins.

Stay Black is the debut extended play by American gothic rock and roll / post-punk band Damien Done. Originally titled Love Thongs, it was recorded in September 2003 and scheduled for release in April 2004, through Belgian record label Good Life Recordings. The record company refused to release the extended play and kept it stuck in limbo for thirteen years, until German record label Demons Run Amok Entertainment licensed its rights in late 2015. While awaiting its official release, the band offered the music for free download and streaming across a variety of websites, with an often-changing track listing and several different cover artworks. Demons Run Amok Entertainment's official vinyl and digital release was finally issued on July 8, 2016.
