Orchestra of Samples

Orchestra of Samples is a film and audio project by audio/video artists and producers Addictive TV. [1] It's a unique endeavor breaking down cultural and musical barriers based on sampling recording sessions with over 200 musicians around the world while travelling in South America, Asia, the Middle-East, North & West Africa and across Europe. Since 2010, the artists filmed the improvised sessions with musicians playing all manner of instruments from localized traditional to contemporary and newly invented, sampling and splicing them to create new music. In 2017 it was released as an album on German label Studio !K7.

History

An early version of Orchestra of Samples premiered in London at Watermans Arts Centre in November 2013. [2] It received positive reviews, including from The Times journalist John Bungey who called it "ingenious and compelling". According to Huffington Post , the artists "create the perfect integration of audio and visual technologies in their thrilling live show... musicians from around the world in their John Lomax-esque Orchestra of Samples project, they cut and splice different media into one cohesive vision." [1] A review on arts website Cultured Vultures called it "a glimpse into the very essence of music" and in 2017 Songlines magazine described the project as "most impressive".

Performances have included Russia's Erarta Museum of Contemporary Arts in St. Petersburg, [3] the French cultural institute Musee du quai Branly in Paris, [4] Centro Nacional de las Artes (México) in Mexico City for the Transitio Festival and the Museum of Contemporary Art of Rome for the prestigious Romaeuropa Festival. [5] In 2016 they performed the project at the famous Círculo de Bellas Artes in Madrid, Spain and the Royal College of Art in London. In 2017, supporting the release of the project's album on German label Studio !K7, Addictive TV toured the UK, dates included WOMAD World of Music, Arts and Dance, Shambala Festival and BBC Music Day in Sheffield. Other performances include Celtic Connections in Glasgow and in 2020 at the Centre Pompidou in Paris.

Of the 200 and more musicians Addictive TV recorded for Orchestra of Samples, notable artists they collaborated with on the project include Dame Evelyn Glennie, Laetitia Sadier of British group Stereolab, Kuljit Bhamra MBE, Motorhead drummer Lucas Fox, Latin Grammy Award winner Mazinho Quevedo, Henry Dagg, BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician Shona Mooney, Senegalise hip-hop artist Matador, French rappers Edgar Sekloka and Gael Faye aka Milk Coffee and Sugar and producer Chris Birkett.

During live performances of the project, artists who have guested on stage with the group include Dame Evelyn Glennie, Dennis Rollins MBE, Baluji Shrivastav, Byron Wallen, Stomp's Paul Gunter and members of Spanish band Txarango.

Emergency Broadcast Network is a multimedia performance group formed in 1991 that took its name from the Emergency Broadcast System. The founders were Rhode Island School of Design graduates Joshua Pearson, Gardner Post, and Brian Kane. Kane left EBN in 1992. The EBN Live Team included DJ Ron O'Donnell; video artist-technologist Greg Deocampo, founder of Company of Science and Art (CoSA); founding CTO of IFilm.com), artist-designer Tracy Brown; and programmer-technologist Mark Marinello.

Addictive TV

Addictive TV are digital artists known for their movie supercuts and creation of audiovisual remix material, sampling movies and TV. After a number of years recording and filming musicians around the world, in 2017 they signed with German label !K7 to release the album of their Orchestra of Samples project, fusing electronic and world music. Based in London, the group comprises Graham Daniels and Mark Vidler. From 2000 to 2005 they produced the DJ:VJ music television series Mixmasters, and in DJMags 2006 annual poll, Addictive TV were voted #1 VJ in the world for a second time - the first being 2004.

Nishat Khan

Nishat Khan is an Indian sitar player from an illustrious musical family and the foremost sitar virtuoso of his generation. As a composer and music producer he has collaborated with some of the world's leading musicians such as Paco Peña, John McLaughlin, Philip Glass and Evelyn Glennie. His sitar concerto "Gate of the Moon" premiered with the BBC National Orchestra for the Proms at Royal Albert Hall in 2013.

Quynh Nguyen is a Vietnamese-American classical pianist based in New York City. She has performed extensively throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia, to wide critical acclaim. For her Carnegie Recital Hall debut, the New York Concert Review commented: “Ms. Nguyen’s pianism and music making are graced with beauty and exuberance. She is a real artist; a wonderfully communicative performer. What a compendium of intellect, sophistication and taste!” Dr. Quynh Nguyen currently serves on the piano faculty of Hunter College and the International Keyboard Institute and Festival in New York City.

Manitoba Chamber Orchestra

The Manitoba Chamber Orchestra (MCO) is a chamber orchestra based in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. It offers an annual subscription series at Westminster United Church, which regularly features the world's leading soloists, from James Ehnes to Marc-André Hamelin. Other core MCO activities include recording, touring, and engaging extensive outreach in remote communities in northern Manitoba. Currently, Anne Manson serves as the MCO's Music Director and Vicki Young serves as its Managing Director.

Erarta Galleries


Erarta Galleries is a part of a global Erarta project that has a goal to promote Russian contemporary art both in that country and outside its borders. The project itself is a private institution. A promotional process is based on reinvestments from sales of art pieces back into the project. Income is used to support to contemporary Russian artists.

Joseph Phibbs is an English composer of orchestral, choral and chamber music. He has also composed for theatre, both in the UK and Japan. Since 1998 he has written regularly to commissions for Festivals, for private sponsors, and for the BBC, which has broadcast premieres of his orchestral and chamber works from the Proms and elsewhere. His works have been given premieres in Europe, the United States and the Far East, and he has received prestigious awards, including most recently a British Composer Award, and a Library of Congress Serge Koussevitzky Music Foundation Award. Many of his works have been premiered by leading international musicians, including Dame Evelyn Glennie, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Leonard Slatkin, Sakari Oramo, Vasily Petrenko, Gianandrea Noseda, and the Belcea Quartet.

The Aluphone is a tuned percussion instrument consisting of aluminum bells that are struck with a mallet to produce musical tones. In its standard configuration, the bells of the Aluphone are mounted on a frame, but it can also be played as a single handheld bell or as a stack of bells. The bells of the Aluphone are very durable, so they can be struck with a large variety of mallets, wands, or hammers depending on the tone that the musician seeks to produce.
