The Order of the Hero of the Liberation War (Bosnian : Orden heroja oslobodilačkog rata) was the highest military decoration of the Army of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina during the Bosnian War. Nine members of the Army of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina were awarded the honor posthumously. Under the same conditions, the Order could have been received by military units and institutions.

Contents

The medal is made of metal: silver Ag 999/1000, gold-plated with Au 24kt, and has 45 sapphires. The dimensions of the order are approx. 100×60mm. [1]

Order

Based on amendment LI, point 5, paragraph 3, to the Constitution of the Republic of BiH and Article 4 of the Decree with legal force on decorations of the Republic of BiH (Official Gazette of the Republic of BiH, No. 9/94), this order was awarded:

"For the heroic contribution to the war of liberation, exceptional heroism and self-sacrifice manifested in combat actions, and at the same time achieved exceptional results that served as an example, incentive and additional motive for the comrades and citizens for further successful opposition to the aggressor in RBiH." [2]

Recipients

By decree of the Presidency of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1994, the Order of Hero of the Liberation War was awarded to: Safet Hadžić, Mehdin Hodžić, Hajrudin Mešić, Adil Bešić, Safet Zajko, Midhad Hujdur, Enver Šehović and Nesib Malkić, while Izet Nanić was awarded the same order in 1998. All recipients of this award were awarded posthumously. They were also awarded the Order of the Golden Lily.

The song "Devet heroja" ("Nine heroes") written by Dževad Ibrahimović and interpreted by Mustafa Isaković is dedicated to nine Bosnian army heroes of the Liberation War. [3]

After the war he became the general commander of the Army of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. In 2018, he was charged with war crimes.

Izet Nanić was a Bosnian brigade commander in the Bosnian Army during the Bosnian War of Independence.

Midhad Hujdur aka Hujka was a member of the Army of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina. In the First Mostar Brigade, whose commander was Arif Pašalić, Hujdur commanded a battalion numbering 1,200 fighters. When Pašalić was appointed commander of the 4th Corps, Hujdur took command of the brigade, which would later become the 41st Glorious Brigade. He was killed on June 30, 1993, in the action to unblock Mostar and was buried at the Martyrs Cemetery in Mostar.

Safet Hadžić was a Bosnian politician, president of the Crisis Staff of the Sarajevo region and organizer of the resistance during the Bosnian War. He was killed in action during the seizure of weapons at the Pretis weapons factory in Vogošća. He was posthumously awarded the rank of brigadier general. He also received war awards, the Order of the Golden Lily in 1992 and the highest military decoration, the Order of the Hero of the Liberation War in 1994. He was one of the founders of the Party of Democratic Action of Sarajevo, the first president of the SDA of Novi Grad, and one of the founders of the SDA Rudo.

Safet Zajko was a Bosnian brigadier general, a member of the Army of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina. He was awarded the Order of the Golden Lily and the Order of the Hero of the Liberation War.

Mehdin Hodžić aka Kapetan Senad was a Bosnian military officer and a member of the Army of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina. He was posthumously awarded the Order of Hero of the Liberation War and the Order of the Golden Lily. He was also called Kapetan Labud or Crni labud while commanding the special forces Black Swans.

Nesib Malkić was a Bosnian military commander in the Army of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina. He was also the commander of 210/281. Knight's Liberation Brigade, to which the name "Nesib Malkić" was added after his death.

Vinko Šamarlić was a Bosnian police special unit member and an officer in the Army of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina. He was also successful judoka. He was posthumously awarded the Golden Police Star, the Medal for Bravery, and the Order of the Golden Crest with Swords, after he died in the Battle of Hrasno, during the siege of Sarajevo in the Bosnian War.
