Orsolya "Orsi" Ferenczy (born 25 June 1984) is a Hungarian former swimmer, who specialized in butterfly events. [1] She captured a bronze medal from the European Junior Championships, and later represented Hungary, as a 16-year-old, at the 2000 Summer Olympics. Ferenczy also held a national record in the 100 m butterfly (1:00.37), until it was later broken by Beatrix Boulsevicz in 2003. [2]
Ferenczy made her own swimming history, as a 16-year-old teen newcomer, at the 2000 European Junior Swimming Championships in Dunkerque, France, where she earned a bronze medal in the 50 m butterfly with a time of 28.07, finishing behind Israel's Vered Borochovski and Netherlands' Hinkelien Schreuder by more than half a second (0.50). At the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Ferenczy competed only in two swimming events. She achieved a FINA B-cut of 1:01.01 from the Hungarian Championships in Budapest. [4] On the first day of the Games, Ferenczy placed twenty-third in the 100 m butterfly. Swimming in heat four, she faded down the stretch from second at the final turn to share a third seed with Belgium's Fabienne Dufour in a matching time of 1:01.15. [5] [6] Ferenczy also teamed up with Ágnes Kovács, Gyöngyver Lakos, and Annamária Kiss in the 4×100 m medley relay. Swimming the butterfly leg in heat one, Ferenczy posted a split of 1:00.61, but the Hungarians raced to the fifth spot and thirteenth overall in a final time of 4:11.11. [7] [8] [9]
Ferenczy also attended the University of Maryland in College Park, Maryland, where she majored in psychology and played for the Maryland Terrapins swimming and water polo team, under head coach Jim Wenhold, from 2003 to 2007. [10] While swimming for the Terrapins, she posted a career best in the 100-yard butterfly (57.31) at the 2003 NCAA Division I Championships. [11]
Orsolya Tompa is a Hungarian swimmer, who specialized in sprint freestyle and butterfly events. She represented her nation Hungary at the 2008 Summer Olympics, and has edged out fellow swimmer Emese Kovács to claim the 100 m butterfly title by eight hundredths of a second (0.08) at the 2007 European Junior Swimming Championships in Antwerp, Belgium, with a time of 1:00.22.
Shim Min-ji is a South Korean former swimmer, who specialized in freestyle and backstroke events. She is a two-time Olympian and a three-time relay medalist at the Asian Games (2002).
Theophilus "Theo" Verster is a South African former swimmer, who specialised in butterfly and in individual medley events. He won three medals at the 1999 All-Africa Games, and later represented South Africa at the 2000 Summer Olympics. He also held an African record of 55.04 from the 2002 Telkom International Sprint Challenge that defeated Terence Parkin for a top finish and sliced off Brendon Dedekind's standard by 0.37 of a second. During his sporting career, Verster trained full-time under his personal coach Alisdair Hatfield.
Philippe Meyer is a Swiss former swimmer, who specialized in butterfly events. He is a 2000 Olympian, a two-time Swiss record holder in short-course swimming, and a member of Genève Natation 1885.
Yoav Meiri is an Israeli former swimmer, who specialized in butterfly events. He is a 2000 Olympian, a 20-time Israeli champion, and a four-time national record holder in sprint butterfly. While studying in the United States, he earned All-American and All-Big Ten honors in the 200-yard butterfly as a member of the University of Minnesota swimming and diving team.
Anthony Ang Kang Keam is a Malaysian former swimmer, who specialised in butterfly events. He is a two-time Olympian, a double SEA Games titleholder in a butterfly double, a Bolles School graduate, and a member of Florida State University (1998-1999) and University of Minnesota (2000-2002) swimming and diving team while studying in the United States.
Karina Helene Muller is a South African former swimmer, who specialised in sprint and middle-distance freestyle events. She represented South Africa in two editions of the Olympic Games, and later captured two silver medals each in sprint freestyle and medley relay at the 2002 Commonwealth Games.
Siobhan Trichelle Cropper is a 2-time Olympian and swimmer from Trinidad and Tobago, who specialized in sprint freestyle and butterfly events. Cropper represented Trinidad and Tobago in two editions of the Olympic Games, and eventually captured the 100 m butterfly title at the 1998 Central American and Caribbean Games in Maracaibo, Venezuela. She also holds three Trinidadian records in a sprint freestyle and butterfly double, two NCAA championship titles and fourteen All-American honors, while attending Stanford University.
Antonia "Tonia" Machaira is a retired Greek swimmer, who specialized in sprint and middle-distance freestyle events. She represented Greece in two editions of the Olympic Games, and later helped the Greeks capture the silver medal in the freestyle relay (3:48.74) at the 2001 Mediterranean Games in Tunis, Tunisia.
Tsai Shu-min is a retired Taiwanese swimmer, who specialized in sprint and middle-distance freestyle, but also competed in backstroke and in individual medley. She represented Chinese Taipei in two editions of the Olympic Games, and later earned four medals in swimming, including her first ever gold, at the 1998 Asian Games in Bangkok, Thailand.
Annamária Kiss is a Hungarian former swimmer, who specialized in backstroke events. She represented Hungary in two editions of the Olympic Games, and also trained for Dunaferr Sports Club under her longtime coach and mentor Erzsébet Tóth.
Heidi Earp is a female English former competitive swimmer who represented Great Britain in the Olympic Games and the European championships, and for England in the Commonwealth Games.
Renate Magdeleen du Plessis is a South African former competitive swimmer who specialised in butterfly events. She broke numerous South African records in the 100-metre butterfly at the 1997 Pan Pacific Swimming Championships in Fukuoka, Japan, and later represented South Africa as an 18-year-old at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece. She received ten All-American honours as a member of the Florida Gators swimming and diving team.
Lee Bo-Eun is a South Korean former swimmer, who specialized in freestyle and butterfly events. She represented South Korea in two editions of the Olympic Games, and also earned bronze medals in the medley relay at the Asian Games.
Praphalsai "Waen" Minpraphal is a Thai former swimmer, who specialized in butterfly, but also competed in backstroke and individual medley. She represented Thailand in all three editions of the Olympic Games since 1992, and earned numerous medals in her own specialties at the Southeast Asian Games since 1991. While residing in the United States on her college career, she helped the California Golden Bears set a new world record (1:49.23) and capture the 4×50 m medley title at the 2000 NCAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championships. Minpraphal is among the Asian swimmers, along with Joscelin Yeo of Singapore and Akiko Thomson of the Philippines, to train for the Bears under women's head coach Teri McKeever.
Eydis Konráðsdóttir is an Icelandic former swimmer, who specialized in sprint butterfly events. She represented Iceland in two editions of the Olympic Games, and also held an Icelandic record in the 100 m butterfly until it was later broken by Kolbrún Yr Kristjánsdóttir and Sarah Blake Bateman within the 2000s decade. Konradsdottir is a medicine undergraduate at the University of New South Wales, and also married to Australia's medley swimmer and three-time Olympian Matthew Dunn.
Hsieh Shu-ting is a Taiwanese former swimmer, who specialized in freestyle and butterfly events. She represented Chinese Taipei in two editions of the Olympic Games, and later captured a bronze medal in the 4 × 200 m freestyle relay (8:18.92) at the 1998 Asian Games in Bangkok, Thailand.
Kenza Bennaceur is an Algerian former swimmer, who specialized in butterfly and in individual medley events. She won two bronze medals in the 200 m butterfly (2:33.54) and 400 m individual medley (5:29.60) at the 1999 All-Africa Games in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Valentyna Trehub is a Ukrainian former swimmer, who specialized in sprint freestyle events. Trehub competed for Ukraine in two relay swimming events at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney. On the first day of the Games, Trehub teamed up with Nadiya Beshevli, Olena Lapunova, and Olga Mukomol in the 4 × 100 m freestyle relay. Swimming the second leg, she recorded a split of 57.39, but the Ukrainians rounded out the seven-team field to last place and thirteenth overall in a final time of 3:49.11. Because of her powerful effort in the freestyle relay and Mukomol's decision to focus on her sprint double, Trehub was selected to join with Beshevli, Svitlana Bondarenko, and Olena Hrytsyuk in the 4 × 100 m medley relay. During the prelims race, she swam the freestyle leg in heat three with an anchor of 58.22 to deliver a fifth-place finish and sixteenth overall for the Ukrainians in 4:15.64.
Olena Hrytsyuk is a Ukrainian former swimmer, who specialized in sprint butterfly events. Hrystyuk competed for Ukraine in the women's 4×100 m medley relay at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney. Teaming with Nadiya Beshevli, Svitlana Bondarenko, and Valentyna Trehub in heat three, Hrystyuk swam the butterfly leg and recorded a split of 1:02.77, but the Ukrainians settled only for seventh place and sixteenth overall in a final time of 4:15.64.
