Oshikango is a constituency in the town of Helao Nafidi in the Ohangwena Region of northern Namibia, on the border to Angola. It had 17,480 registered voters in 2020 [update] . [1] It is named after the settlement of Oshikango, today part of the town Helao Nafidi.
Oshikango Constituency covers an area of 261 km2 (101 sq mi). It had a population of 28,635 in 2011, up from 21,706 in 2001. [2]
As is common in all constituencies of former Owamboland, Namibia's ruling SWAPO Party has dominated elections since independence. The first councillor of Oshikango Constituency was SWAPO politician Michael Hishikushitja. He was elected to represent Ohangwena region in the National Council of Namibia and served in both positions until his death in 2001. [3] In the 2004 regional election SWAPO candidate Hiyavela Usco Nambinga received 7,303 of the 7,370 votes cast. [4]
SWAPO also won the 2015 regional election by a landslide. Its candidate Fillippus Namundjebo gathered 6,023 votes, while the opposition candidates Timotheus Shikongo of the Rally for Democracy and Progress (RDP) and Gabriel Shikudule of the Democratic Turnhalle Alliance (DTA), received 451 and 172 votes, respectively. [5] SWAPO also won the 2020 regional election. Its candidate Ester Nghidimbwa received 4,782 votes, far ahead of Timotheus Shikongo of the Independent Patriots for Change (IPC), an opposition party formed in August 2020, who obtained 980 votes. Ohangwena is one of the fourteen regions of Namibia, its capital is Eenhana. Major settlements in the region are the towns Eenhana and Helao Nafidi as well as the self-governed village of Okongo and the proclaimed settlements Ongha, Ongenga and Omungwelume. As of 2020, Ohangwena had 150,724 registered voters.
Keetmanshoop Rural is an electoral constituency in the ǁKaras Region of Namibia. It covers an area of 37,922 km2 (14,642 sq mi) and contains the Krönlein suburb of Keetmanshoop and the villages of Koës and Aroab, the settlements of Seeheim and Klein Karas, as well as several farming communities in the area. Keetmanshoop Rural had a population of 7,219 in 2011, up from 6,399 in 2001. As of 2020 the constituency had 6,398 registered voters.
Oshikango is a former village in northern Namibia and since 2004 part of the town of Helao Nafidi, although it still maintained its own village council for a number of years. Oshikango is still the name of the border post with Angola and the electoral constituency for this suburb. It is estimated to have grown from "a tiny cluster of shebeens around an open market into a thriving boomtown with around 5,000 to 8,000 inhabitants over a period of 10 years".
Sesfontein Constituency is an electoral constituency in the Kunene Region of Namibia. Its district capital is the settlement of Sesfontein. The constituency had a population of 7,358 in 2004. As of 2020, it has 5,614 registered voters.
Eenhana is an electoral constituency in the Ohangwena Region of Namibia, on the border to Angola. It had 15,912 registered voters in 2020. The constituency covers an area of 1,112 km2 (429 sq mi) and contains the town of Eenhana and the surrounding area. The constituency office is located in Eenhana. The constituency had a population of 21,089 in 2011, up from 18,690 in 2001.
Endola is an electoral constituency in the Ohangwena Region of Namibia, on the border of Angola. It had 14,100 registered voters in 2020. The constituency covers an area of 328 km2 (127 sq mi) and contains numerous settlements, including part of Ongha. The constituency office is situated at Endola. The constituency had a population of 25,591 in 2011, up from 24,804 in 2001.
Engela is an electoral constituency in the Ohangwena Region of northern Namibia. It had 13,743 registered voters in 2020. It is named after the settlement of Engela, today part of the town Helao Nafidi. Engela is home to one of the biggest hospitals in Namibia, Engela State Hospital.
