Ost-West Handelsbank AG (OWH) was a Soviet-controlled bank in Frankfurt established in 1971. [1] [2] It was acquired by VTB Bank and changed its name to VTB Bank Deutschland on 30 September 2006.
Ost-West Handelsbank AG (OWHB) was founded in 1971 by the Soviet Union's Gosbank, VEB of the USSR and a number of allied trade associations with Andrey Dubonosov as chairman of the board. [1] [3] [4] [5] [6] [a]
Ost-West Handelsbank supported trading between West Germany and the West with the Soviet Union and its friendly socialist states including East Germany, and, after the reunification of Germany, it continued supporting trade between Germany and the CIS states. [3] [6] From 1973 to 1991, OWHB facilitated trade between East Germany and West Germany through its stand at the annual spring and autumn festivals in Leipzig. [6]
In 1974, OWHB gained stakes in Moscow People's Bank (London) and Wozkhod Handelsbank (Zurich) and Viktor Gerashchenko became the second chairman of the board replacing Dubonosov. [6]
On 9 May 1976, Igor Semyonovich Gorbatsevich (Russian : Игорь Семёнович Горбацевич) from Vneshtorgbank became chairman of the board of OWHB and Gerashchenko transferred to the Singapore branch of the Moscow Narodny Bank (MosNarBank) London. [6]
In 1983, OWHB opened its Moscow branch at Kamergersky Lane, 6. [6]
From July to December 1985, Anatoly Tsemyansky replaced Gorbatsevich, who retired, and in February 1986 Valery Lyulchev became chairman of the board until November 1989 when Sergei Bochkarev replaced him. [6] [8] [9] [10] [11] [b] [c] Bochkaryov was chairman of the board of OWHB from 1989 to 1993. [12] [d]
By 1990, it was the third largest of the daughters of the State Bank of USSR behind the much larger Moscow Narodny Bank in London and Banque Commerciale pour l'Europe du Nord – Eurobank in Paris. [1] [14]
At the end of 1991, Ost-West Handelsbank had a DM 65 million paid-in share of capital. [3]
In the early 1990s, Sergei Nikolaevich Dergachyov (Russian : Сергей Николаевич Дергачёв) [e] became president of Ost-West Handelsbank after the former president and chairman of the board of Ost-West Handelsbank from 1985 to December 1993 Sergei Mikhailovich Bochkarev (Russian : Сергей Михайлович Бочкарев) left for work with the German branch of Inkombank. [1] [15] [19] Dergachyov served as chairman of the board of Ost-West Handelsbank from December 1993 to November 2002. [15]

Banque Commerciale pour l’Europe du Nord or Banque Commerciale pour l'Europe du Nord – Eurobank (BCEN-Eurobank) was a Soviet-controlled bank in Paris, founded in 1921 by wealthy Russian emigres and supported by the Council of People's Commissars (SovNarKom) through Leonid Krasin who, in 1925, sold their stakes to the Soviet Union. It maintained correspondent accounts with Western banks to secure lines of credit for facilitating Soviet imports into that country in which the correspondent account is located. Also, these correspondent accounts performed foreign currency exchange for the Kremlin.

Wozchod Handels Bank of Zurich was a Swiss bank established on 22 June 1966. It was a Sovzagranbank involved in Russian gold trading and was owned by the Soviet government. The Wozchod Handelsbank, which was allowed only 4 Soviet employees, and the Soviet embassy in Bern were both actively used as a base for Soviet operations in Switzerland. The bank was a worldwide financier of pro Soviet and pro Communist propaganda and intelligence activities. It was named in honor of Voskhod which was an October 1964 three person space shot by the Soviet Union. The Russian word Восход, which transliterates to Wozchod in German or Voskhod in English, means dawn or sunrise.

East-West United Bank is a bank based in Luxembourg, established on 12 June 1974 by the Gosbank, the Soviet Union's central bank. It has been fully owned by Russia-based Sistema since 2018. The bank offered private banking and corporate financing. Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 the bank has had to surmount many problems. Unable to sell the business, Sistema took the decision in late 2023 to close the bank.
The Soviet Union was the first jurisdiction to implement a single-tier banking system, an experience that was subsequently emulated by a number of Communist states.
