Out On The Floor is a single by Dobie Gray. Since its release in 1966, it has become significant as a popular northern soul song. It has been referred to as the song that defines northern soul. [1] [2]
The song was released in May, 1966 as a single backed by "No Room to Cry" on Charger CRG-115. [3] It was re-issued on the Black Magic label in 1975 (see record label). [4]
It charted twice in the UK. The first time was in 1975, when it reached No. 42, spending 8 weeks in the chart. [5] The second time was in 1983, when it settled in at No. 95. [6]
In Nick Hornby's book, Juliet, Naked, the song is referred to as the "National Anthem of Northern". [7] It is also mentioned in the book Oil and Honey: The Education of an Unlikely Activist by Bill McKibben, [8] Last Days of Disco by David F. Ross, [9] and more.

Northern soul is a music and dance movement that emerged in Northern England and the English Midlands in the late 1960s from the British mod scene, based on a particular style of Black American soul music, especially from the mid-1960s, with a heavy beat and fast tempo or American soul music from northern cities such as Detroit, Chicago and others.
Birgit Dieckmann, known professionally as Billie Ray Martin, is a German singer and songwriter, known for her single "Your Loving Arms", which reached the top 10 of both the UK Singles Chart (#6) and the Irish Singles Chart (#8) in 1995, and reached number one on the US Dance Club Chart. She was also one of the vocalists on the S'Express UK top 10 hit single "Hey Music Lover" (1989), and had UK top 40 hits as lead vocalist of Electribe 101 with "Tell Me When the Fever Ended" (1989) and "Talking with Myself" (1990), and as a solo singer with "Running Around Town" (1995) and "Imitation of Life" (1996).

Hilltak records was a Californian Independent record label that was formed in the late 1970s. Artists that produced hits for the label include 9th Creation, Patti Hendrix, Broadway, Dalton & Dubarri, and The Guess Who. The label started out as a subsidiary of Atlantic Records but terminated the relationship some time later.
