Water polo is a competitive team sport played in water between two teams of seven players each. The game consists of four quarters in which the teams attempt to score goals by throwing the ball into the opposing team's goal. The team with the most goals at the end of the game wins the match. Each team is made up of six field players and one goalkeeper. Excluding the goalkeeper, players participate in both offensive and defensive roles. It is typically played in an all-deep pool where players cannot touch the bottom.
At the 1904 Summer Olympics, a water polo tournament was contested, with three club teams of seven players each. A German team tried to enter, but its entry was rejected because their players did not play for the same club.
A water polo tournament was held on the Seine on 11 and 12 August 1900 as part of the 1900 Summer Olympics. Eight teams from four countries, all European, entered the event, although only seven ended up playing. The Osborne Swimming Club of Manchester, England, which has been listed with two rosters that are nearly entirely different, became the first Olympic water polo champions by defeating the Brussels Swimming and Water Polo Club of Belgium. Third place went to the two French-based semi-finalists, Libellule de Paris and Pupilles de Neptune de Lille, the latter of whom entered two teams, but merged them together after the first round.

Because of its crest, it is also known as the "Double-Headed Eagle of the North", in contrast with AEK, the "Double-Headed Eagle of the South". They are one of the most popular Greek sports-clubs with many fans all over the country, and also among the Greek diaspora.
PAOK BC, commonly known in European competitions as PAOK, is the professional basketball department of the major Greek multi-sports club A.C. PAOK, which was founded in 1926, and is based in Thessaloniki. The club's basketball section was founded in 1928. The club's home arena is the PAOK Sports Arena, which is an indoor arena with a seating capacity of 8,142 people.
Cesare Rubini was an Italian professional basketball player and coach, and a water polo player. He was considered to be one of the greatest European basketball coaches of all time, Rubini was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1994, making him the first, and to this day, just one of three Italian basketball figures to receive such an honour, alongside Dino Meneghin and Sandro Gamba. He was also inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 2000.
Vaterpolski klub Jug is a professional water polo club based in Dubrovnik, Croatia. The club was established in 1923 as part of sports society "JUG". As of the 2021–22 season, VK Jug competes in the Croatian League, Regional League A1 and LEN Champions League.
Ethnikos Piraeus F.C. is a Greek football club based in Piraeus and its parent sports club is Ethnikos OFPF. The club was officially formed on 21 November 1923 as Keravnos, but existed since 1922. One year later the club was renamed to Young Boys Titan, after some players' secession that formed Peiraikos Podosfairikos Omilos. The club was renamed to Ethnikos on 23 December 1924, after it merged with Peiraikos Podosfairikos Omilos.
Bradley Darrell Schumacher is an American former competition swimmer, water polo player, and Olympic gold medalist. Schumacher is a two-time, two-sport Olympian. He was a member of the winning relay teams at the 1996 Summer Olympics. Four years later, he was a member of the U.S. men's water polo team at the 2000 Summer Olympics.
The Australian Water Polo League is the premier Australian domestic water polo competition. The men's league began in 1990 and the women's league started in 2004. Ten clubs compete in the league, each fielding a women's and a men's team. As of 2021 five clubs are based in Sydney and one each in Adelaide, Brisbane, Fremantle, Newcastle and Perth.
The Montenegrin First League of Water Polo is the national professional water polo league in Montenegro. It was established in 2006. shortly after Montenegro declared its independence from Serbia and Montenegro. It is organized by the Water Polo and Swimming Federation of Montenegro.

Thijs Libregts is a Dutch football coach and former player, who played professionally as a defender in the 1950s. His daughter Patricia was one of the Netherlands' leading water polo players in the 1980s and 1990s.
The 2014–15 A1 Ethniki is the 84th season of the Greek premier Water polo league and the 29th of A1 Ethniki. The winner of the league was Olympiacos, which beat Panathinaikos in the league's playoff's finals. It was the first final of the eternal enemies in Water Polo Championship. The clubs Panionios and Nireas Lamias were relegated to the Greek A2 League.
The 2015–16 A1 Ethniki is the 85th season of the Greek premier Water polo league and the 30th of A1 Ethniki.
HANTH, or HAN Thessaloniki, is a Christian youth development organisation that is based in Thessaloniki, Greece, which comprises the homonymous Greek multi-sport club. The multi-sports club was founded in 1921, and has teams in basketball, volleyball, handball, water polo, and others sports. HAN Thessaloniki is a part of the YMCA in Thessaloniki, which is a Christian universal welfare movement. The full name of the club is Christianiki Adelfotita Neon Thessalonikis (CHANTH) – which is commonly abbreviated as either HANTH or HANTh.
A2 Ethniki Water Polo is the 2nd-tier of the Greek Water Polo championship. It is held in three groups of teams and in current season, 14 teams take part. The championship is held in two stages. The two first teams of the 2nd stage promoted to A1 Ethniki. Current champions AEK won the 2019-20 A2 men's water polo season.
Montenegrin water polo clubs have participated in the LEN competitions since the season 1986-97.
The first team which ever competed at the European cups was VK Primorac Kotor. Except them, in LEN competitions played also PVK Jadran Herceg Novi, VK Budva, VA Cattaro Kotor and PVK Val Prčanj.
The biggest success in the history of Montenegrin waterpolo was that of VK Primorac, who won the title in LEN Champions League 2009. Another Montenegrin holder of European trophy is VA Cattaro.

Nikitas Kocheilas is a Greek water polo player. As a member of Greece men's national water polo team, he won the bronze medal at the 2006 FINA World League and competed at the 2006 European Championship, the 2006 FINA World Cup and the 2008 FINA World League. Kocheilas was also part of the Greece men's national water polo team that was the Champion at the 2001 Junior World Championship in Istanbul.
