Pabellón Insular Santiago Martín is an indoor arena that is located in San Cristóbal de La Laguna, Tenerife, Spain. It is primarily used for basketball games, and is the home arena of the Spanish professional basketball club, Iberostar Tenerife of the Liga ACB.

Structure and features

The Pabellón Insular Santiago Martín can hold 5,100 people for basketball games, and it offers 2,000 square meters of floor space. The facilities remain open all year long, without interruption.

The pavilion also provides the following facilities for athletic use: 5 large locker rooms and 4 "double" locker rooms. Additionally, a gymnasium, infirmary, video and press room are available as well as a rehab room for athletes.

History

The arena was opened in 1999. Pabellón Insular Santiago Martín is the property of the Cabildo de Tenerife (the Island Council of Tenerife), and the Ayuntamiento de La Laguna (the La Laguna City Council). Through an agreement with the Comisión de Gobierno de la Corporación Insular, the management of the pavilion was ceded to the Gestión Insular para el Deporte, la Cultura y el Ocio (the Tenerife Sport, Culture and Leisure Management, also known as IDECO).

The arena hosted the 2017 Basketball Champions League Final Four, as Iberostar Tenerife hosted the tournament. [2] Tenerife won its first Champions League title in the Santiago Martín. The arena also hosted the 2017 FIBA Intercontinental Cup final match between Tenerife and Guaros de Lara. [3] The arena was also used a host venue of the 2018 FIBA Women's World Cup, and the 2020 FIBA Intercontinental Cup.

Until 1999 it was known as the Pabellón de la Ciudad Deportiva del Real Madrid, when it was renamed in honorary of the former president of Real Madrid basketball team, the late Raimundo Saporta. It was demolished in 2004.

2016 FIBA Intercontinental Cup

The 2016 FIBA Intercontinental Cup was the 26th edition of the FIBA Intercontinental Cup. The Final Four was played at the Santiago Martín in San Cristóbal de La Laguna, Spain, on April 2017.

The 2017 FIBA Americas League was the tenth edition of the top-tier level intercontinental professional club basketball competition in the Americas, the FIBA Americas League. The 2017 FIBA Intercontinental Cup was the 27th edition of the FIBA Intercontinental Cup. The cup winner was decided through one game, which was held on September 24, 2017. It was contested by the 2017 FIBA Americas League champions, Guaros de Lara, and the 2017 FIBA Champions League champions, Iberostar Tenerife. The title game was held at the Santiago Martín, in San Cristóbal de La Laguna.

The 2018 Liga Sudamericana de Básquetbol was the 23rd edition of the second-tier level continental professional club basketball competition in the Americas, the FIBA Americas League. Sixteen teams from South America competed over three rounds to determine the champion. The defending champions, Guaros de Lara, did not have the opportunity to defend their title, after the Venezuelan Basketball Federation failed to register the team in the competition, alleging financial troubles. Luis Miguel Bethelmy Villarroel is a Venezuelan professional basketball player who plays in the power forward position for the Venezuela national basketball team and currently plays for Venezuelan club Guaros de Lara in the Liga Profesional de Baloncesto league. He is nicknamed as "the Tsunami". Luis was part of the Venezuelan squad during the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup, where the team ended up at 14th position.

The 2020 FIBA Intercontinental Cup was the 29th edition of the FIBA Intercontinental Cup. The tournament was be held on 7 and 9 February 2020. The tournament was held in San Cristóbal de La Laguna, on the Spanish island of Tenerife. It was the second time in three years the tournament is held in Tenerife after 2017.

2020 Supercopa de España de Baloncesto

The 2020 Supercopa de España de Baloncesto, also known as Supercopa Endesa for sponsorship reasons, was the 17th edition of the Supercopa de España de Baloncesto, an annual basketball competition for clubs in the Spanish basketball league system that were successful in its major competitions in the preceding season. All matches were played behind closed doors due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
