Palestine studies or Palestinian Studies is an interdisciplinary field dealing with the research and study of the civilization, history, literature, art and culture of Palestinian people. This field is a part of the wider field of Oriental studies.

Palestine studies is distinct from Arab studies, which is the study of Arabic culture, the Arabic language and literature specifically. This field includes anthropology, postcolonial studies, gender studies, cultural studies, and English and comparative literature. [1]

Background

The field of Palestine studies has evolved significantly since its inception. Prior to the late 1980s, the study of Palestine was approached through Western social theories that emphasized the mission of European settlers and colonists to guide the natives to modernity. [2]

Orientalism has had a significant impact on the perception of Palestine and its people in the Western world. Edward Said's work on Orientalism highlighted the negative attitudes and stereotypes that Western writers and orientalists held towards the East, including Palestine.[ citation needed ] The rise of biblical archaeology in 19th century, driven by European powers competing for control of Palestine, led to extensive archaeological exploration and the domination of biblical studies. [3] The establishment of the Palestine Exploration Fund in 1865 and the subsequent excavation of major sites during the golden age of biblical archaeology in the 1920s further shaped the disciplines of archaeology and biblical studies. [4]

in recent years, there has been a shift in the study of Israel, the Arab countries, and ethnic relations in Palestine-Israel. [5] there has been a move towards social and cultural history in the study of Late Ottoman and Mandate-era Palestine, exploring issues of gender, class, race, and empire. [6] [7]

The Levant is an approximate historical geographical term referring to a large area in the Eastern Mediterranean region of West Asia and core territory of the political term Middle East. In its narrowest sense, which is in use today in archaeology and other cultural contexts, it is equivalent to Cyprus and a stretch of land bordering the Mediterranean Sea in western Asia: i.e. the historical region of Syria, which includes present-day Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, the Palestinian territories and most of Turkey southwest of the middle Euphrates. He is considered "one of the twentieth century's most influential American biblical scholars", having become known to the public in 1948 for his role in the authentication of the Dead Sea Scrolls. His scholarly reputation arose as a leading theorist and practitioner of biblical archaeology.

The Southern Levant is a geographical region encompassing the southern half of the Levant. Ma'alul was a Palestinian village, with a mixed population of primarily Muslims with a substantial minority of Palestinian Christians, that was depopulated and destroyed by Israel during the 1948 Arab-Israeli war. Located six kilometers west of the city of Nazareth, many of its inhabitants became internally displaced refugees, after taking refuge in Nazareth and the neighbouring town of Yafa an-Naseriyye. Despite having never left the territory that came to form part of Israel, the majority of the villagers of Maalul, and other Palestinian villages like Andor and Al-Mujidal, were declared "absentees", allowing the confiscation of their land under the Absentees Property Law.

Biblical archaeology, occasionally known as Palestinology, is the school of archaeology which concerns itself with the biblical world. In the academic setting it serves as an adjunct to biblical studies, providing the historical, cultural, and linguistic context to scripture.

Tell es-Safi was an Arab Palestinian village, located on the southern banks of Wadi 'Ajjur, 35 kilometers (22 mi) northwest of Hebron which had its Arab population expelled during the 1948 Arab–Israeli war on orders of Shimon Avidan, commander of the Givati Brigade.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Place names of Palestine</span>

Many place names in Palestine were Arabized forms of ancient Hebrew and Canaanite place-names used in biblical times or later Aramaic formations. Most of these names have been handed down for thousands of years though their meaning was understood by only a few. The cultural interchange fostered by the various successive empires to have ruled the region is apparent in its place names. Any particular place can be known by the different names used in the past, with each of these corresponding to a historical period. For example, the city of Beit Shean, today in Israel, was known during the Israelite period as Beth-shean, under Hellenistic rule and Roman rule as Scythopolis, and under Arab and Islamic rule as Beisan.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Samaria (ancient city)</span> Capital of the northern Kingdom of Israel

Samaria was the capital city of the Kingdom of Israel between c. 880 BCE and c. 720 BCE. It is the namesake of Samaria, a historical region bounded by Judea to the south and by Galilee to the north. After the Assyrian conquest of Israel, Samaria was annexed by the Neo-Assyrian Empire and continued as an administrative centre. It retained this status in the Neo-Babylonian Empire and the Achaemenid Persian Empire before being destroyed during the Wars of Alexander the Great. Later, under the hegemony of the Roman Republic and the subsequent Roman Empire, the city was rebuilt and expanded by the Jewish king Herod the Great, who also fortified it and renamed it "Sebastia" in honour of the Roman emperor Augustus.

The Book of Joshua lists almost 400 ancient Levantine city names which refer to over 300 distinct locations in Israel, the West Bank, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria. Each of those cities, with minor exceptions is placed in one of the 12 regions, according to the tribes of Israel and in most cases additional details like neighbouring towns or geographical landmarks are provided. It has been serving as one of the primary sources for identifying and locating a number of Middle Bronze to Iron Age Levantine cities mentioned in ancient Egyptian and Canaanite documents, most notably in the Amarna correspondence.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Hebraization of Palestinian place names</span> The renaming of geographical sites in Palestine

Hebrew-language names were coined for the place-names of Palestine throughout different periods under the British Mandate; after the establishment of Israel following the 1948 Palestinian expulsion and flight and 1948 Arab–Israeli War; and subsequently in the Palestinian territories occupied by Israel in 1967. A 1992 study counted c. 2,780 historical locations whose names were Hebraized, including 340 villages and towns, 1,000 Khirbat (ruins), 560 wadis and rivers, 380 springs, 198 mountains and hills, 50 caves, 28 castles and palaces, and 14 pools and lakes. Palestinians consider the Hebraization of place-names in Palestine part of the Palestinian Nakba.
