The Pamukova train derailment was a fatal railway accident which occurred in 2004 at Pamukova district of Sakarya Province in northwestern Turkey when a higher speed train derailed, at which 41 passengers were killed and 80 injured.
In the early 2000s, a project was started to construct higher-speed rail lines in Turkey, at first between the highest-populated cities Istanbul and Ankara. At 19:45 EEST on July 22, 2004, a higher-speed train named after Yakup Kadri Karaosmanoğlu, heading to Ankara from Haydarpaşa, Istanbul, derailed near Mekece village of Pamukova, Sakarya during one of its first journeys, 182 km (113 mi) away from Istanbul. The accident investigation revealed that the train ran into a curve with a radius of 345 m (1,132 ft) near Mekece railway station with a speed of 132 km/h (82 mph), where the speed limit was 80 km/h (50 mph). The speeding caused the left wheel of the second passenger car to spring off the track. The train's balance quickly deteriorated, and two following cars coupled to the derailed car drifted sideways. [6] Four cars were overturned, while two cars were damaged heavily, having crashed into each other. [1] [2] The locomotive and the first car remained undamaged on the track, and were taken to Osmaneli railway station after the accident. [7]
An analysis carried out by the railway simulation software Adams/Rail showed that a train running at 132 km/h (82 mph) would derail at the curve, while one at a speed of 130 km/h (81 mph) would pass the spot without derailing. [6]
There were no warning signs or signals available at the accident scene. [6] [7] The investigation commission reported that the total journey duration, which was 5 hours and 15 minutes, was too short for the route. The new suggested time was 6 hours. Finally, it was determined that the unsuitable railway infrastructure was one of the main factors that influenced the accident. [6] At the time of the opening of the line one month before, experts had warned the government to modernize the infrastructure before putting higher-speed trains in service. [1]
Immediately after the accident, Binali Yıldırım, the Minister of Transport, Maritime and Communication, was criticized harshly in the public square, and his resignation was demanded. However, he rejected the demands and remained in his office. [8] [9] [10]
Ten years after the accident, the court found the two engineers of the train guilty of negligence causing death. [4] [5] However, since the trial was ruled on over seven-and-half years following the date of the accident, the sentences could not be executed according to Turkish law. [11] [12]

The DE 24000 formed the backbone of the dieselisation of the Turkish railways during the 1970s. It follows the hood unit road switcher design, like most Turkish mainline locomotives. Ahmet Şık is a Turkish investigative journalist, the author of several books, a trade unionist, and member of Parliament in Turkey. His book, The Imam's Army, investigating the controversial Gülen movement of the Islamic preacher Fethullah Gülen, led to his detention for a year in 2011–2012 and the book's being seized and banned. He was under indictment in the OdaTV case of the Ergenekon trials; his cause has been taken up by English PEN, an association of writers fighting for freedom of expression. In 2016, the prosecutor in this case requested Şık's acquittal. On 29 December 2016, Şık was taken into custody once again on charges of "propaganda of terrorist organisations", with reference to 11 tweets that he had published. The following day, an Istanbul judge ordered Ahmet's arrest. According to lawyers, Şık was denied access to legal advice, held in solitary confinement, and not given drinking water for three days. He ran as an HDP candidate in 2018 Turkish elections and got elected from Istanbul's second electoral district. In 2020, he resigned from HDP, citing political differences and after sitting as an independent for a year, he joined the Workers' Party of Turkey.

He previously served as the Minister of Transport, Maritime and Communication from 2013 to 2015. The Capital Express was one of the six daily intercity trains operating between Istanbul and Ankara on the Istanbul-Ankara railway before the Yüksek Hızlı Tren high-speed train service replaced all intercity trains on the line. The Capital Express was the fastest of the six trains, making limited stops only in large cities. The train would complete its journey in just over four hours and in the Eskişehir Province, trains would reach conventional speeds of 150 km/h (93 mph), which still hold the record for fastest conventional train service in Turkey. When the high-speed rail service was opened between Ankara and Eskişehir on 13 March 2009, the Capital Express, along with the other five intercity trains, were cut back between Istanbul and Eskişehir. During this period two more daily intercity trains were added, the Sakarya Express and Eskişehir Express, increasing daily intercity service to eight trains.

The Çorlu train derailment was a fatal railway accident which occurred in 2018 at the Çorlu district of Tekirdağ Province in northwestern Turkey when a train derailed, killing 24 passengers and injuring 318, including 42 severely.
On 13 December 2018, a high-speed passenger train and a locomotive collided near Yenimahalle in Ankara Province, Turkey. Three cars of the passenger train derailed in the collision. Three railroad engineers and five passengers were killed at the scene, and 84 people were injured. Another injured passenger later succumbed to injuries, and 34 passengers, including two in critical condition, were treated in several hospitals.
