The album is the follow-up to the concept album In the Passing Light of Day . During its development, Daniel Gildenlöw used a different approach to composing in order to expand the sounds of the band without losing its typical style. [9] PopMatters described the album as "a true triumph", with "added variety, experimentation, and thought-provoking quandaries". [10]

It was released on March 12, 2001, in Europe and a day later in North America through Music for Nations and Koch Records. Daniel Gildenlöw is a Swedish musician and songwriter. He is best known as a multi-instrumentalist and vocalist for the progressive rock band Pain of Salvation. In the band, he is the main songwriter, lead singer, lead guitar player, and the mastermind behind each album's concept. He was also an official member of the band the Flower Kings but was forced to leave before their 2005 US tour because he was opposed to US-VISIT which requires submitting one's own biometric data first before entering the country.

Pitfalls is the sixth studio album by Norwegian progressive metal band Leprous, released on 25 October 2019 via Inside Out Music and preceded by the singles "Below", "Alleviate", and "Distant Bells". It was recorded over six months at Ghostward Studios. A cellist, violinist, and classical choir were recruited for the production. Most of the songs were written and composed by Leprous vocalist Einar Solberg.
