Pantokrator is a Swedish Christian metal band that was formed in 1996. The band's name means "Lord Almighty" in Ancient Greek. Several members have been in Crimson Moonlight and Sanctifica. [3]

Background

Pantokrator was formed in fall 1996 as a cover band. [4] The band then decided to play songs written by themselves. It has had six members overall: Jonas Wallinder (bass guitar), Rickard Gustafsson (drums), Karl Walfridsson (vocals) and Matthias Johansson, and Johnathan Jansson (guitars). Pantokrator released two demos within their first three years of existence, followed by several EPs and compilations of material they had accumulated until they officially released their debut album, Blod, which was released via Rivel Records on March 14, 2003. [5] At that point, the band members had been together without losing a member for six years, only adding guitarist Jonathan Jansson in 2003. [4] After four years of silence, the band released a single titled "Leviathan", a compilation titled A Decade of Thoughts, and their sophomore album, Aurum. Aurum, which was released on June 20, 2007, came out via Whirlwind Records, a label that had housed such bands like Kekal, Sacrificium, and Lengsel. [6]

Another silence embarked, until 2010, when a single was released. However, instead of following it up with more material, the band waited until 2014 to release new material. Incarnate came out on January 21, 2014, via Rottweiler Records, home to Soul Embraced, Immortal Souls, and Grave Robber. [7] The band would consistently release material over the next six years, until they released their fourth album, Marching Out of Babylon, released through Nordic Mission. [8] The album was written around the visions of John the Apostle and the "Visions of Nicholas Farel 1914", from the Ordo Aurum: The Golden Order of the Almighty. [9] The album's lead single was titled "We the People", which possessed very politically charged lyrics and imagery in the video, which led to people accusing them of being fascists. [10] Over the years, they had similarly been accused of being illuminati and fundamentalists for some of the themes they incorporated. [10] The point of the track was not necessarily to be pro-America, but to point back to Christianity's core beliefs, which the band has focused on throughout their career. [11] In 2021, Pantokrator was listed as one of five death metal bands to look out for, alongside In-Conquered, Mangled Carpenter, Incarnate Deity, and Symphony of Heaven, the latter being a band that Walfridsson had done guest vocals for. Style

Pantokrator's common genre has been death metal. [14] In a review of Pantokrator and Sanctifica's split EP, the band's style was described as "Crunchy death metal". The full review stated, "A classic brutal release with two great bands. Sanctifica plays Symphonic Black Metal & Pantokrator plays Crunchy Death Metal. Really cool stuff that shouldn't be miss if you are into brutal metal." [15] Another review described them as "brutal, doomy death metal". [16] Art For The Ears webzine, reviewing the band's album Aurum, said, "It's always pleasant to hear a band making progression. Aurum is the second full-length studio-album from the Swedish death metal band Pantokrator. On Aurum they've abandoned the Swedish lyrics they wrote for Blod. Now all songs are in English and the growls are quite easy to understand. This can't be said of the printing in the booklet. They are almost impossible to read as the texts have almost the same color as the backgrounds. But the music makes up for the lack of care for the booklet (the cover is also one of the dullest I've ever seen). What is immediately clear after I popped this disc into the player, is that the band has progressed. The songs are more mature and the sound quality is very good. Most of the songs are uptempo. A few are slower, more depressive and doomy (like the excellent "Thy Feeble Flame"). Pantokrator is not a band with lots of guitar solos, but the solo in "Where Lilith Found Her Peace" is really tasty. What I miss on this album, is the violin playing that Blod had. Nonetheless, Pantokrator has moved forward and the result is a very nice piece of melodic death metal." [14]

Frost Like Ashes is a Christian black metal band that formed in Kansas City, Missouri in 2001. The band has released two EPs - Born to Pieces and Pure as the Blood Covered Snow - and a full-length album, Tophet, and their songs have appeared on three compilation albums. Crimson Moonlight is a Swedish unblack metal band. The band was formed in the summer of 1997 with the mere intention of recording a primitive old school black metal demo and playing one show before breaking up. However, the breakup never happened, and they have since recorded two EPs and three full-length albums. They were previously signed to Rivel Records, currently to Endtime Productions. They have toured US twice, and have been featured in two metal documentary films.

Immortal Souls is a melodic death metal band from Kokkola, Finland, formed in 1991. They released a split album and their debut on Little Rose Productions in the late 1990s and early 2000s. In 2002, Immortal Souls signed with Dutch label Fear Dark which released their second and third album as well as a compilation. They have performed at Tuska Open Air Metal Festival. Their musical style is characterized by their use of melodic guitar riffs and singing which shifts between growls and shouting. Their music has been called winter metal since Immortal Souls utilizes frosty metaphors in their lyrics and usually creates a cold, wintry atmosphere. The album Wintereich was released in 2007 in Europe on Dark Balance and in the USA through Facedown Records.

Sanctifica was a Swedish unblack metal band, formed in 1996, and disbanded in 2003. After releasing their EP, In the Bleak Midwinter, in 1997, they were considered to be one of the leading modern Christian black metal bands in the early 2000s with their album Spirit of Purity. Signed to Swedish Rivel Records and Finnish Little Rose Productions, the band played progressive death metal on their second and last album Negative B. They did a tour through Scandinavia to support that album, performing at some of the best known rock clubs in big cities. Hubertus Liljegren went to join Crimson Moonlight, while the rest formed a rock group called As a Reminder.

Overcome or Burn Forever in Hell/Arachnid Terror Sampler is an EP by black metal band Paradox combined with a sampler album featuring fourteen different artists, released in 2002 by the band's own Tarantula Promotions label. Limited to five hundred copies, it contains two songs by Paradox, which were the final recordings of that band, along with a compilation of fourteen songs previously recorded by their respective artists. The album's musical style was described as extreme metal, with the various genres on the album falling under black metal, death metal, grindcore, deathcore, and doom metal. Apart from Paradox, the other artists represented on the album include Soul Embraced, Sanctifica, Frosthardr, Frost Like Ashes, Kekal, Pantokrator, and Tortured Conscience, among others. According to Paradox founder Michael "John Tarantula", the release was a result of his newsletter project, Fangs of Life, which he published through his Tarantula Promotions label.

Grave Robber is an American horror punk band from Fort Wayne, Indiana. The band started rehearsing in 2005. In 2006, Grave Robber released, a vinyl EP, Love Hurts independently. Their first two studio albums, Be Afraid and Inner Sanctum, were released by Retroactive Records, correspondingly in 2008 and 2009. The subsequent three studio albums, Exhumed, You're All Gonna Die!, and Escaping The Grave were released by Rottweiler Records, correspondingly in 2010, 2011, and 2018. An EP, Straight To Hell was released in 2014. Rottweiler Records has acquired the rights to Be Afraid and Inner Sanctum, with plans to re-release in 2020.

Death Requisite is a heavy metal band from Sarasota, Florida. The band describes their style as "blackened symphonic melodic technical death metal" or simply "extreme hybrid metal". The band has played with Living Sacrifice, Extol, Zao, Norma Jean, and Sleeping Giant. The band is signed to Rottweiler Records.

Vials of Wrath are an American Christian metal band, who play a mixture of unblack metal and death metal music, with one member Dempsey "DC" Woodrow Mills Jr. He is from Princeton, West Virginia, however the band was formed in 2011 in Charlotte, NC. The band has released three studio albums, Seeking Refuge in 2013, Days Without Names in 2015, and Dark Winter Memories in 2019. The project have released four extended plays, Vials of Wrath, in 2011, Let There Be Light, in 2013, Ataraxia and The Ways of Old in 2018.

Rottweiler Records is a Christian metal record label based out of Dallas, Texas, United States. The label features bands such as Lust Control, Soul Embraced, The Jericho Harlot, and Pantokrator. The label started early on as a label that served punk rock, but has become a label that serves metal and punk. It is a Christian label, and therefore many of its artists are as well. The label was created by Shawn Browning, also known as Wretched of Grave Robber. Many bands on the label have placed high on CMW's charts and have had many positive reviews. The label participates in several compilations, including Kill the Ill a benefit comp for Rottweiler's owner Shawn Browning, and Metal Pulse: A Tribute to Dale Huffman.

Shadow Puncher is a brutal death metal project that began in 2016 as a solo project of Max Kevin Ølstøren. The band began as a death metal/black metal project out of Trondheim, Norway, releasing demos with hand-drawn art. The band was signed to Nosral Recordings.

Brotality is an American thrash and groove metal band that originated out of Narrowsburg, New York. The band began in 2016 between brothers Bryce (guitars/vocals) and Reece Maopolski (bass/vocals). In 2018, the band was joined by Liam Fenton on drums and the band began to record and perform shows alongside the likes of Knocked Loose, Red, Deep Purple, and Judas Priest. The band cites Mastodon, Alice Cooper, Metallica, Silent Planet, August Burns Red, and many others as influences.

Maniacal Entropik Discordium is the sophomore album of the melodic death metal band Symphony of Heaven. The album was released in 2021, four years after the debut of The Season of Death on Nosral Recordings. The album is the debut of Eero Tertsunen on guitars, David "Timōrātus" Napier (Timōrātus) on bass, and Mason "Asaph" Beard on drums, which saw founder Logan "Pathos" Thompson switch from everything to solely guitars and vocals. The album was originally titled Entropy, however Thompson changed the title later on throughout the process.

The Ascension of Extinction is the third EP by melodic death metal band Symphony of Heaven. The EP was the band's debut with Rottweiler Records, a Ft. Wayne, Indiana-based label that housed artists such as Skald in Veum and Pantokrator, both of whose vocalists share a guest spot on the EP. The EP was released on September 4, 2020. In the song "DeathMarch", the band quotes 2nd Thessalonians, chapter 2.
