Panyagor (alternatively spelled Panyagoor) is the county headquarters of the Twic East County of Jonglei State in the Greater Upper Nile region of South Sudan. [1] Panyagor was also the headquarters of Twic East County before that county's division from 2016 to 2020 into Twic North County, Twic center County, and Twic South County. [2] [note 1] Panyagor lies roughly 110 kilometers to the north of Bor Town, the capital of Jonglei State, and seven kilometers to the west of the Jonglei Canal.
Panyagor is commonly said to have once been a 'wut' (cattle camp) belonging to the Ayual community. Its possession was transferred to the Kongor community after the burial of the Kongor chief Aguir Deng there. [3]
Joseph Oduho, a founding member of the Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM), was killed in Payagor on 27 March 1993. He had traveled there to discuss how to build a new coalition after the violent breakup of the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA) into rival factions. [4] [5]
A cargo plane chartered by Norwegian Church Aid and carrying material for a Lutheran World Federation WASH (water, sanitation and hygiene) project in Jonglei crashed in Panyagor on 14 November 2014. [6] [7] [8]
During the floods of 2013, which displaced many people and destroyed homes in Panyagor, parts of the town were overrun by hippopotamuses looking for pasture. The hippos trampled and destroyed dykes in the county and displaced people who "moved to higher grounds fearing being eaten by hippos." [9]
Jonglei State is a state of South Sudan with Bor as its centre of government and the biggest city. Jonglei state comprises nine counties: Bor, Akobo, Ayod, Uror, Duk, Nyirol, Pigi, Twic East, and Fangak. Jonglei State is the largest state by area before reorganisation, with an area of approximately 122,581 km2, as well as the most populous according to the 2008 census conducted in present-day South Sudan's second period of autonomy. The boundaries of the state were again changed as a result of a peace agreement signed on 22 February 2020.
Bor is a historic city in the Bor County of Jonglei State, in the Greater Upper Nile region of South Sudan, being the epicenter of national liberation revolution with multiple landmarks that tells the story. In Malual-Chaat barrack, statues of liberators and destroyed weapons are conserved and exhibited at historical heritage site. It has also served as the headquarters of Jonglei state. The city is situated on the east side of the White Nile at the southern extent of the sudd, South Sudan's vast central wetlands.
Arok Thon Arok was a politician from Southern Sudan. He was one of five senior commanders of the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA), before defecting.

South Sudan has 64 tribes with the largest being the Dinka, who constitute about 35% of the population and predominate in government. The second largest are the Nuers. Elijah Malok Aleng was a South Sudanese public servant, general, and politician, from [Twic Dinka/Twi East county] in Jonglei State. He was born on 28 November 1937 at Thianwong village when his family was living among the Pen people in Angakuei in Baidit, about 20 miles northeast of Bor town. His family, which is originally from Awulian in Wangulei, Twic East County, migrated back to be with fellow Awulian kinfolks. He attended Malek Primary School (1950–1953), and then Juba Intermediate School and Juba Commercial Senior Secondary School, graduating He then attended Free University of the Congo, in the present Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), and later got a scholarship to study in Fribourg Catholic University, Switzerland, from which he obtained a master's degree in economics in 1972. In 1975 he obtained another Masters in Development Studies and Economic Planning from Wolfson College, Cambridge in the United Kingdom. In his memoirs: the Southern Sudan: Struggle for Liberty, named Chief Deng Biar Abit, leader of the Awulian clan, Paul Logali, former finance minister of Southern Sudan regional government and Akec Kwai Biar, former Bor District Commissioner and his cousin as the people who positively influenced him.
Kolnyang is a Payam in Bor County, in Jonglei State, South Sudan. It is situated on the east side of the Bahr al Jabal River, to the south of Bor, South Sudan. Kolnyang’s Malual-Chaat was where the liberation revolution that led to South Sudan independence started. Both 105 Battalion commander Alier NhialMangardit and the first fallen hero of revolt Maker Jool were from Kolnyang. Kolnyang Payam is Bor county’s southernmost payam, bordering Central Equatoria State to southwest, Pibor Administrative Area to the east, Lake State to the west and Eastern Equatoria State to the southeast.
Anyidi is a Payam in Bor East County, in Jonglei State, South Sudan. It is situated to the east of Bor, the capital of Jonglei State, on the road connecting Bor and Pibor, in Boma State.

The Battle of Bor was one of the first battles of the South Sudanese Civil War, consisting of a series of clashes for the city of Bor, the capital of Jonglei State, between the SPLA and SPLA defectors under Peter Gadet, part of the force that would become the SPLA-IO. The city changed hands four times between December 18, 2013 and January 18, 2014, ultimately leaving the SPLA in control.
In January 2022, armed Murle militias attacked Bor Dinka villages in Jonglei State, South Sudan, killing dozens of people.
